Maryland closed out fiscal year 2023 with an unassigned general fund balance of $555 million, according to a report released Wednesday by Comptroller Brooke Lierman.
There would have been an additional $2.029 billion leftover, but the 2023 Maryland General Assembly already earmarked that amount towards various projects in 2024.
The reserve funding is nearly $1.5 billion less than what former Governor Larry Hogan left in the coffers at the close of fiscal year 2022.
Lierman says the difference reflects federal stimulus funding which significantly increased consumer spending and personal and business income.
This year's report indicates the effects of national inflation, especially impacting low- to moderate-income families.
Despite that, the Comptroller says withholding...
Canada is investigating allegations that India was involved in the assassination of a Sikh activist, a Canadian citizen, on Canadian soil.
The victim, Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was gunned down outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18.
Nijjar was a strong supporter of an independent Sikh homeland known as Khalistan. The movement is banned in India as officials see it as a national security threat. But the movement still has some support in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom, where sizable Sikh communities live.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadian intelligence agencies are investigating allegations that the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have played a role in Nijjar's assassi...

The idea that Rep. Matt Gaetz will run for Florida governor in 2026 has been the topic of several conversations in Tallahassee over the past few days, including during a reception Sunday night for the incoming speaker of the Florida House.
Gaetz has long been considered on the shortlist of those who will try to seek the Republican nomination for governor, a field that is expected to be crowded because the incumbent, Ron DeSantis, will be facing term limits. DeSantis is currently running for president but would have two years remaining in the governor’s mansion if that run falls short.
Gaetz, like most other Florida Republican politicians, was in Tallahassee for the designation ceremony of Miami Republican state Rep. Danny Perez, who starting next year will serve as speaker of the F...
Former President Donald Trump isn't losing sleep over the prospect that he could end up behind bars, he said in an exclusive interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker.
"I don't even think about it," Trump, who has been indicted four times this year, said when asked if he worries about prison at night. "I'm built a little differently I guess, because I have had people come up to me and say, 'How do you do it, sir? How do you do it?' I don't even think about it."
Later in the interview, which was recorded Thursday at Trump's Bedminster golf club and which airs Sunday on NBC affiliates, the former president returned to the question.
"When you say, do I lose sleep? I sleep," he said. "I sleep. Because I truly feel that, ...

Former Israeli defense officials warned US senators in the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations that the judicial reform plan being promoted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government "harms Israel's national strength through the dismantling the IDF," in a letter on Monday, according to N12.
The letter, which was also sent to Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman MK Yuli Edelstein, accused Netanyahu of "leading acts aimed at harming the Israeli judicial system and the Supreme Court in a way that will nullify the independence of the Israeli judiciary and subordinate it to Netanyahu and his fellow politicians."
"These actions—led and promoted by Netanyahu—are transforming the State of Israel from a democracy based on the princ...

Hunter Biden sued the Internal Revenue Service on Monday, alleging that two agents who claimed interference into the case against him wrongly shared his personal tax information amid escalating legal and political struggles as the 2024 election looms.
The suit says the agents “targeted and sought to embarrass Mr. Biden." Biden says federal whistleblower protections sought by the agents don't include the sharing of confidential information in press interviews and testimony before Congress.
The suit comes as a long-running investigation into Hunter Biden continues to unfold against a sharply political backdrop, including an impeachment inquiry aimed at his father, President Joe Biden.
Hunter Biden was indicted days ago on federal firearms...
