Baltimore, MD - Mar. 13, 2023 - Maryland's unemployment rate dropped to three percent after the state added 8,200 jobs in January 2023, according to WMAR2News. The Leisure and Hospitality sector led the way with 4,500 new jobs, while the Professional and Business Services sector suffered losses. Preliminary data had suggested that Maryland had lost 200 jobs in December 2022, but this has since been revised to a gain of 4,100 jobs, leading to a drop in the unemployment rate.

The Baltimore City Council will hold its regular meeting on Monday and a city councilman will introduce legislation to change the Board of Estimates.
Councilman Zeke Cohen's bill would create recommendations for a charter amendment to either eliminate or change the board. Any recommendations would go to voters for approval next year.
Cohen spoke with WBAL's T.J. Smith on Monday. When asked about why he would propose the bill, Cohen said it's because too much power is in the hands of one person, the mayor of Baltimore.

The Department of Transportation will send proposed legislation to Congress Monday asking legislators to ban so-called family seating fees on flights.
The proposal follows calls from President Joe Biden to get rid of "junk fees" -- including extra costs on airline tickets so families can sit together. The proposal would prohibit airlines from charging a fee or additional costs on kid's seats in the same service class as an accompanying adult.
DOT officials conducted a review last year of airline seating policies, encouraging carriers to "review and improved" their policies to ensure kids can sit near parents at no additional cost.

The Maryland House voted Friday for a measure that would create a legal framework and tax structure to enable recreational marijuana to be sold in stores as soon as July 1.
The House voted 103-32 for the bill, sending it to the Senate, which is moving forward with a separate measure.

Governments in the U.S. and Britain are taking extraordinary steps to prevent a potential banking crisis after the failure of California-based Silicon Valley Bank prompted fears of a broader upheaval.
U.S. regulators worked through the weekend to find a buyer for the bank, which had more than $200 billion in assets and catered to tech startups, venture capital firms, and well-paid technology workers.

U.S. regulators said Sunday it shut down New York-based Signature Bank, a second financial institution they shuttered after Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse.
“We are also announcing a similar systemic risk exception for Signature Bank, New York, New York, which was closed today by its state chartering authority,” Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC said in a joint statement Sunday evening.
The banking regulators said depositors at Signature Bank will have full access to their deposits.
“All depositors of this institution will be made whole. As with the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank, no losses will be borne by the taxpayer,” the regulators said.
