A Court of Appeals will hear arguments from both gubernatorial candidate Dan Cox and the Maryland State Board of Elections on the counting of mail-in ballots issue next Friday, October 7th at 10am. This comes a week after a circuit court judge ruled in favor of the SBE's petition requesting the mail-in ballots to be counted earlier and just one day after a Court of Special Appeals judge denied Cox's request for a stay. Chief Judge Matthew Fader has ordered that both sides file their briefs by next Tuesday, October 4 and any reply briefs be filed by next Thursday, October 6 at noon.
As you read here on BJL, social media posts are showing teens how to easily steal vehicles. After a summer of "Gone in 60 Seconds" type car thefts, there is good news for owners of tens of thousands of cars that can be easily stolen, thanks to a viral social media challenge. A repair kit now showing up at dealerships may end a rash of car thefts nationwide. Rebecca Perry is among hundreds of Kia and Hyundai owners whose cars have been stolen this year. "They took away something that I called mine," Perry said. Her beloved 2019 Kia Soul was stolen from a parking lot outside her home, then taken for a joy ride and wrecked. Police blame a social media trend on TikTok showing teens how easy it can be, she says, "to start a car and be gone within 20 seconds."
We don't need to tell you that inflation is continuing; you feel it every time you go shopping. Unfortunately, some economists predict inflation won't be where it usually is until 2024. But that doesn't mean help isn't on the way for some Americans. COST-OF-LIVING RAISES It may sound dry, but if you are an older American on social security, you are well aware of cost-of-living adjustments. Cost-of-living adjustments are the increase in pay Americans on social security get each year. Cost-of-living adjustments are based on the consumer price index, which measures inflation and has been at 40-year highs for most of the year. Right now, the expectation is the adjustment in 2023 will be 8.7%. How much is that? If you get a $1,000 check every month, that's $87 m...

A new poll by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland found that Democrat Wes Moore is leading the Maryland governor's race by 32 points. Moore, a best-selling author and nonprofit executive, is facing Republican Del. Dan Cox, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, in the General Election. The poll found that Moore had 86% percent support among fellow Democrats while he also garnered 22% of the Republican vote and 38% of the independent vote. Maryland is an overwhelmingly Democratic state, but voters are willing to elect moderate Republicans like Gov. Larry Hogan and former Gov. Robert Erhlich Jr. However, Cox is extremely conservative -- opposing abortion rights and COVID restrictions --- limiting his crossover appeal. The poll had a margin of...
Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday slammed Israel’s emerging maritime border agreement with Lebanon, accusing Prime Minister Yair Lapid of caving in to Hezbollah, according to local media reports. “Yair Lapid shamefully surrendered to [Hezbollah chief Hassan] Nasrallah’s threats,” Netanyahu reportedly stated, adding: “He is giving Hezbollah sovereign territory of the State of Israel with a huge gas reservoir that belongs to you, the citizens of Israel.” Netanyahu argued that Lapid was attempting to “pull a fast one” on the Israeli public by forging ahead with the accord without a public referendum, as is required by Israeli law before the government can cede sovereign territory. In the event, Netanyahu said that he woul...
When the brocha is made on the lulav we do not add on the tefillah asking for the Bais Hamikdash to be rebuilt. We do say a yehi ratzon with this request when we do Sefiras Ha’Omer. Shaking the lulav for seven days is a reminder of the Bais Hamikdash as the mishna teaches us that Bnei Yisroel would only shake the lulav on the first day. During the times of the Bais Hamikdash, those who were in the Bais Hamikdash itself shook for seven days; however, once the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed Reb Yochanan ben Zakkai established that we shake the lulav for seven days everywhere as a zecher for the Bais Hamikdash. Why don&r...
National security adviser Jake Sullivan told a top Ukrainian official on Sunday that any individual or entity who supports Russia’s annexation of regions in eastern and southern Ukraine will face “severe” consequences.  Sullivan met Andriy Yermak, head of the office of Ukraine’s president, in Istanbul on Sunday, according to a statement from the White House, two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine. “Mr. Sullivan underscored the United States’ steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He conveyed that the United States and its allies and partners will not be deterred by Russia’s flagrant v...
Lyman, a key supply hub in eastern Ukraine, has been “fully cleared” of Russian forces, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday, as Western countries cast the troops’ withdrawal as a strategic victory that could undermine Russia’s effort to control the Donetsk region. Donetsk is one of four Ukrainian regions that Russia claimed it annexed after staged referendums, in violation of international law and despite widespread global criticism. Russia, meanwhile, is looking ahead to next steps after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexations. The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog called for Russian forces to release the director of the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility. Russia’s pullout from Lyman &ldq...
Senator Ted Cruz (Texas-R) expressed concern Sunday over an emerging deal between Israel and Lebanon, which could fix the maritime boundary between the two countries and enable Lebanon to drill natural gas reserves partially located in waters currently claimed by Israel. Following praise for the deal from Hassan Nasrallah – chairman of the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah – Cruz said he was “troubled” by the apparent pressure applied by the Biden administration on Israel to make concessions to Lebanon, and called for a congressional probe of the matter. “I am deeply troubled that Biden officials pressured our Israeli allies to hand over their territory to the Iran-controlled terrorist group Hezbollah,” Cruz tweeted. “Another topic for the next ...
Hundreds of thousands of people were stuck without power and other basic needs days after Hurricane Ian ripped through Florida, as recovery from the deadly storm was estimated to easily cost billions of dollars. First responders were going door-to-door in search of survivors or bodies of people who perished amid the Category 4 storm’s whipping winds that topped 150 mph and pounding rain that caused massive flooding. The storm was believed to have killed at least 82 people in the Sunshine State, with another four deaths in North Carolina, according to an NBC count early Sunday. The Associated Press had a lower death toll of 47 in Florida from the hurricane. Among the dead was an elderly couple whose oxygen machines turned off after they lost power, aut...
The University of California, Berkeley, was slammed Friday for creating “Jewish-free zones” after nine student groups adopted a rule forbidding pro-Israel speakers at events. The controversial bylaw, updated for the new academic year by a pro-Palestinian group on campus, says it aims to stop the spread of Zionist beliefs.  “[The organizations] will not invite speakers that have expressed interest and continue to hold views, host, sponsor or promote events in support of Zionism, the apartheid state of Israel and the occupation of Palestine,” states the bylaw, written by the Berkeley Law Students for Justice in Palestine. But the policy — which also effectively bans the school’s Jewish dean from speaking — was promptly slammed&...
A crowd of students, teachers and principals stood in Vilnius’s historic Ghetto Victims (Rūdninkai) Square as they listened to the speeches and watched the performances of their classmates. Lithuanian politicians, representatives of various institutions and of the Lithuanian Jewish community, and foreign diplomats were also in attendance. Each year on Sept. 23, the day in 1943 the Nazis began to liquidate the Vilnius Ghetto, Lithuania marks the genocide of its entire Jewish community in cities and towns throughout the country. Fewer than 25,000 Lithuanian Jews survived from a prewar total of approximately 250,000. The group gathered to retrace the final steps of Vilnius’s Jews 81 years ago, by marching from Rūdninkai Square to the city’s railway station, whe...
Iran is awaiting the release of about $7bn (£6.3bn) in funds frozen abroad, state media said on Sunday, after it allowed an Iranian-American to leave the country and released his son from detention. Baquer Namazi, 85, was permitted to leave Iran for medical treatment abroad, and his son Siamak, 50, was released from detention in Tehran, the UN said on Saturday. “With the finalisation of negotiations between Iran and the United States to release the prisoners of both countries, $7bn of Iran’s blocked resources will be released,” said the state news agency, IRNA. Billions of dollars in Iranian funds have been frozen in a number of countries – notably China, South Korea and Japan – since the US reimposed biting sanctions on the Islamic republic in 2018 a...
International Space Station commander Samantha Cristoforetti on Saturday greeted Israel with "shalom" and a handful of mesmerizing snaps of the Jewish state from outer space. The Italian astronaut posted the pictures from orbit on her Twitter account, featuring the Haifa and Tel Aviv metropolitan areas as well the Dead Sea as she continues to photograph and broadcast pictures of different regions of planet Earth from outer space. "Shalom & hello to #Israel and the cities of Haifa and Tel Aviv at night," she wrote in the caption. She also added that she was "intrigued by these straight lines at the southern end of the Dead Sea – turns out it’s a complex of Jordanian salt evaporation ponds!" Cristoforetti's footage of Haifa extends from Israel&#...
MK Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism) told journalist Shneor Weber of the Merkaz Hainyanim newspaper that Prime Minister Yair Lapid is "very dangerous to Israel", among other things due to his conduct regarding the war in Ukraine. "I don't like his behavior towards Russia, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jumping headfirst into the matter. This is a sensitive issue. Prime Ministers have always been careful when it came to foreign policy and there has always been moderation in their statements. But not only that, a Prime Minister who belittles things that are holy to Israel, when he is a Prime Minister who is supposed to represent everyone, he is not suitable," he stated. Gafni blasted Lapid, saying, "Yair Lapid sits and eats at a non-kosher restaurant with the foreign ...
Ukraine on Sunday claimed full control of the eastern logistics hub of Lyman, its most significant battlefield gain from Russia in weeks, Reuters reported. The setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin came two days after he proclaimed the annexation of four regions covering nearly a fifth of Ukraine, an area that includes Lyman. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the capture of the town, where Ukrainian flags were raised over civic buildings on Saturday, demonstrated that Ukraine is capable of dislodging Russian forces and showed the impact Ukraine's deployment of advanced Western weapons was having on the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that the success of the country's soldiers was not limited to the recaptur...
Twitter hammered Vice President Kamala Harris for a recent speech in which she described that federal Hurricane Ian relief would be based on "equity" and prioritize people in "communities of color." Speaking to actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas at the Democratic National Committee's Women's Leadership Forum on Friday, Harris claimed that people of color and low-income communities are most affected by natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Because of this, Harris described how federal relief should be given "based on equity." The Vice President declared, "It is our lowest income communities and our communities of color that are most impacted by these extreme conditions and impacted by issues that are not of their own making." Chopra interjected, "And women," to which Ha...
