The delivery of letters and packages may be delayed because of Hurricane Ian. The United States Postal Service has temporarily suspended retail and delivery services in southwest and central Florida. More than 100 locations, from Tampa to Fort Myers, are closed until further notice. "We will continue to monitor tropical weather conditions and well restore service when it is safe to do so," USPS said in a statement. FedEx customers should also expect delays. The shipping company says disruptions can be expected for inbound and outbound shipments across Florida. UPS announced it would not provide pickups or deliveries in dozens of zip codes in Florida. In Devarim 31:9 we see that Moshe wrote the Torah and gave it to the Kohanim the sons of Levi. The Gemara in Gittin 71b says that the following things are done to keep the peace. A Kohen gets the first aliya and we learn it from the above passuk. Since the Torah specified the Kohanim the sons of Levi. We know that the Kohanim were descendants of Levi. It comes to teach us that the Kohanim get the first Aliyah and then comes the Levi.   The Chasam Sofer asks why do we need the passuk the fact is that we do it to keep the peace so what is the need for the above passuk? The Chassam Sofer says that it is true that we do it for the peace but we would not know if the Kohen comes first or last so we bring the passuk to show first comes the Kohen then the Levi.   The Chasam Sofer elabo...
San Juan, - My name is Tamar Shlesinger, I have a Ph.D. in social work and I am a volunteer with United Hatzalah of Israel. Currently, I am taking part in the organization’s delegation to Puerto Rico to offer psychological and medical aid in the wake of Hurricane Fiona.  I landed in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Friday morning with my 5 partners, all United Hatzalah volunteers with a background in psychological treatment and emergency medical aid. After members of the local Jewish community warmly welcomed us at the Chabad house, we started by trying to identify the needs of the population. We were connected with Levid Ortiz, the Director of PR4PR, who has been spearheading support efforts for many of the underprivileged communities. He identified communities that had so far...
A White House plan to cancel student loan debt for tens of millions of Americans will cost roughly $400 billion, according to a new estimate by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, increasing federal budget deficits over the next decade and beyond. The administration’s plan to temporarily extend an existing pause on student loan payments would further increase the cost, the CBO found, by roughly $20 billion. The new cost estimate will add fresh fuel to the debate over President Biden’s decision to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for eligible borrowers, a policy cheered by advocates as transformative for the middle class but assailed by Republican lawmakers as a wasteful and inefficient use of government funds. Delivered Monday in a letter ...
Russian President Vladimir Putin granted citizenship on Monday to Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor who leaked information about top-secret U.S. surveillance programs and is still wanted by Washington on espionage charges. The decree signed by Putin covered 72 foreigners, but Snowden was the most prominent. Russia granted him asylum in 2013 after he fled the United States to avoid prosecution. The 39-year-old Snowden, who considers himself a whistleblower, was granted permanent residency in Russia in 2020, and his lawyers said at the time that he was applying to obtain a Russian passport without renouncing his U.S. citizenship. His lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told the state-run news agency RIA Novosti on Monday that his wife, Lindsay Mills, is...
Democrats understand "they will lose" the midterms if November's election is a referendum on President Joe Biden, former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. Psaki on Sunday said Republicans will be able to exploit Democrats' failures with crime and the economy, while claiming her party has an advantage when it comes to "extremism." "Look, I think that Democrats, if the election is about who is the most extreme, as we saw, you know, [House Minority Leader] Kevin McCarthy touch on there with [Rep.] Marjorie Taylor Greene [R-Ga.], I'll say her name, sitting over his left side, then they're going to win," Psaki said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." "If it is a referendum on the president, they will lose, and they know that. They also know that crime is a hu...
Term limits for Baltimore city elected officials is a question being posed to voters on the November ballot. Organizers hope limiting elected officials to serving ...
Maryland Republican Gubernatorial candidate Dan Cox is appealing a judge's recent decision to allow mail-in ballots to be counted before Election Day. On Friday, a judge in Montgomery County ruled that counting for this November's General Election could begin as soon as October 1. The decision stemmed from a lawsuit brought by the State Board of Elections, challenging a Maryland law that requires mail-in votes to be counted two days after an election. Many blamed the law for delayed Primary election results back in July. Officials had told the judge they would not reveal any early results until polls closed on Election Day, but that it would allow them to be caught up and avoid a backlog of votes. Prior to the judge's order, Cox had expressed opposition to changing the ...
Move over or slow down, it's a state law in Maryland when approaching emergency or service vehicles and now that law is being expanded to protect everyone. Watch those hazards or it could cost you a hefty fine. Beginning this Saturday, October 1, Maryland’s Move Over Law will be expanded. The expanded law will require motorists to change lanes when any vehicle is stopped and is displaying warning signals. If moving over is not an option, then the motorists must slow down to a safe speed. The original Move Over Law in Maryland was passed in 2010 requiring drivers to move lanes for emergency responders, law enforcement, and trucks that provide roadside assistance. In 2014, the law was expanded to include tow truck drivers. Now another expansion of the law is intended to prot...
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention no longer recommends universal masking in health care settings, unless the facilities are in areas of high COVID-19 transmission. The agency quietly issued the updates as part of an overhaul to its infection control guidance for health workers published late Friday afternoon. It marks a major departure from the agency’s previous recommendation for universal masking. “Updates were made to reflect the high levels of vaccine-and infection-induced immunity and the availability of effective treatments and prevention tools,” the CDC’s new guidance says. Now, the CDC says facilities in regions without high transmission can “choose not to require” all doctors, patients, and visitors to mask. Transmissio...
