Baltimore, MD - Sept. 20, 2022 - In order to ease congestion on Strathmore Avenue on Erev Rosh Hashanah and Erev Yom Kippur,  Bnos Yisroel has graciously agreed to open and make its parking lot available for users of Machzikei Torah's Mikvah until 1:00PM.
In the year 4681 (920), the greatest halachic authority in Eretz Yisrael, Rav Aharon ben Meir, proclaimed that the months of Marcheshvan and Kislev of the coming year (4682) would both have only 29 days. As a result, the next Pesach (4682) would begin on a Sunday and end after Shabbos, in Eretz Yisrael, and after Sunday, in Chutz LaAretz. Prior to Ben Meir's proclamation, all had assumed that Marcheshvan and Kislev that year would both be 30 days long, which would result in Pesach beginning two days later -- on Tuesday, and ending on Monday, in Eretz Yisrael, and on Tuesday, in Chutz LaAretz. Thus, Ben Meir was pushing Pesach forward two days earlier than anticipated. Those communities that followed Ben Meir would eat chametz when it was still Pesach according to the original calcula...

Britain and the world said a final goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II at a state funeral Monday that drew presidents and kings, princes and prime ministers — and crowds who massed along the streets of London to honor a monarch whose 70-year reign defined an age. In a country known for pomp and pageantry, the first state funeral since Winston Churchill’s was filled with spectacle: Ahead of the service, a bell tolled 96 times — once a minute for each year of Elizabeth's life. Then, 142 Royal Navy sailors used ropes to draw the gun carriage carrying her flag-draped coffin to Westminster Abbey before pallbearers bore it inside the church, where around 2,000 people ranging from world leaders to health care workers gathered to mourn her. The trappings of state and m...
Passengers who rely on MARC train service between Baltimore and Washington D.C. will have to make some changes to their morning commute. The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) temporarily suspended service on some trains from Camden Yards for the next two weeks. MDOT officials said CSX Transportation owns and operates trains on the Camden line and it continues to experience severe freight train congestion on that line, particularly between the Dorsey and Camden Yards stations. MDOT posted a message on its website warning MARC Camden line riders of the temporary schedule changes for this week and next. MDOT officials said CSX management needs the extra time to work on addressing the congestion issues. The temporary MARC train schedule adjustments are in effect from ...

Avraham’s willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Yitzchak was the climax of his ten divine tests and the seminal expression of religious commitment. Surprisingly, we only have one mitzvah that commemorates the Akeidah: the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah. Chazal explain that blowing the shofar aims to remind God of Avraham’s commitment and our identification with it. The Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 16a) explains that for this reason, we customarily use the horn of a ram — the animal Avraham sacrificed after he was told to spare Yitzchak. Although the Akeidah may not have taken place on Rosh Hashanah itself, it is the day we commemorate it because it is the day God and (therefore) we reflect on our religious identity and commitment. The essence and goal of Rosh Has...

The cave, exposed by a mechanical digger in the course of development works, was accessed for the first time since it was sealed, at the time of Rameses II. The artifacts lay on the cave floor as they were laid out in the ancient burial ceremony. Israel Antiquity Authority archaeologists: “A once-in-a-lifetime discovery” An exceptional and amazing discovery from the time of Rameses II, the Pharaoh associated with the Biblical Exodus from Egypt, was revealed last Wednesday when a mechanical digger penetrated the roof of a cave in the Palmahim Beach National Park, in the course of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority development works. Dror Sitron, Israel Antiquities Authority inspector, was the first to discover the cave. The Israel Antiquity Authority archaeologists mobilize...
The state of Maryland closed the 2022 fiscal year with a revenue surplus of nearly $2 billion dollars. This marks the second year in a row Maryland has seen a multi-million dollar windfall-- to which Maryland State Comptroller Peter Franchot credits “a massive unanticipated influx of revenues.” Anirban Basu, economist and CEO of Sage Policy Group, explained how the State will allocate its surplus. As required by law, $500 million will to go to the Rainy Day Fund and $370 million to the Fiscal Responsibility Fund. Comptroller Peter Franchot is urging lawmakers to place the $1.1 billion dollars of unassigned revenue into the Rainy Day Fund. Economist Basu says bolstering the Rain Day Fund is wise move. He points to the current economic climate, rising inflation and recent hi...
It was a 16-mile pursuit on I- 83, then the dramatic end to a high-speed chase that had weaved its way in traffic from Baltimore City into the County. Inside the car, investigators say they found three loaded guns, ammunition, and marijuana. Police say they arrested three teens, two of who were 15 and one 17-year-old. It's part of what some see as a dangerous trend in Baltimore that involves more young people being accused of violent crimes. Friday’s high-speed chase came on the heels in recent weeks of a teen arrested for gunning down, killing a student in broad daylight outside of his high school and a 15-year-old who's now been charged as an adult for the killing that left a 17-year-old dead in the Inner Harbor over Memorial Day Weekend. "A lot of stealing, violence...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 18, 2022 - A belated Bar Mitzvah was celebrated under most unique circumstances - locked behind bars and wearing iron shackles. The man, a Maryland resident, was assisted by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Sholom Reindorp, founder and director of Jewish Incarcerated Family Services of Maryland, who attended the trial to show support for the defendant and his family. Before the trial commenced, the judge approved the Rabbi access to the holding cell to pray with the defendant. Invoking the declaration of the sages that "the world stands on three pillars: Torah study, prayer, and good deeds", Rabbi Reindorp proceeded to share Torah insights, and help the man say Shema, and give Tzedakah. The walls of the holding-cell echoed the sounds of the Shofar as it was blown (as is cus...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 18, 2022 - The shofar is blaring and noisy. It seeks to be invasive! Like the shrill alarm clock, it wakes us up from our stupor and spiritual apathy. But then comes and even more powerful sound, powerful in its silence-- the''קול דממה דקה'', our quiet inner voice. Lasting teshuvah is cast by the spell of this composed quiet rhythm, the rhythm of ישוב הדעת, mindfulness and self-awareness.
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 18, 2022 - Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, Jewish Uniformed Service Association of Maryland director and Police Chaplain, officiated today at the Shomrim Society of Maryland 30 year memorial service for the late Baltimore Police officer Ira Weiner, z'l, who was killed in the line of duty in 1992.
