Delta Air Lines Inc.’s chief executive officer apologized to customers for an “unacceptable” level of canceled and delayed flights, an unusual step that reflects mounting frustration among waylaid summer travelers. Delta is adding extra boarding time for flights, building in more of a buffer in crew schedules to mitigate disruptions and using white collar salaried workers to help speed customers through airports, Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian said in a letter to its SkyMiles frequent flier program members Thursday. “We’ve spent years establishing Delta as the industry leader in reliability, and though the majority of our flights continue to operate on time, this level of disruption and uncertainty is unacceptable,” Bastian said. The apology comes...
The Treasury Department announced on Thursday that it is freezing more than $1 billion hidden by a Russian oligarch in a Delaware-based trust in violation of U.S. law, as the Biden administration seeks to crack down on Kremlin elites in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Suleiman Abusaidovich Kerimov, a billionaire with ties to President Vladimir Putin and a member of Russia’s upper house of parliament, was found to have stashed the funds through a complex web of opaque legal arrangements and shell companies in violation of U.S. sanctions, the Treasury Department said. Kerimov has been under sanctions by the U.S. government since 2018 over Russia’s violence in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. The announcement highlights the administration’s intensifying efforts to investig...
After being prodded higher by inflation fears, mortgage rates were dragged down this week by recession concerns. According to the latest data released Thursday by Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate average dropped to 5.7% with an average 0.9 point. (A point is a fee paid to a lender equal to 1% of the loan amount. It is in addition to the interest rate.) It was 5.81% a week ago and 2.98% a year ago. Freddie Mac, the federally chartered mortgage investor, aggregates rates from around 80 lenders across the country to come up with weekly national averages. The survey is based on home purchase mortgages. Rates for refinances may be different. It uses rates for high-quality borrowers with strong credit scores and large down payments. Because of the criteria, these rates are not available to ...
Over the objection of three justices, the Supreme Court today left in place New York’s coronavirus vaccine requirement for health-care workers that does not include a religious exemption. The court’s action came on the final day of the term, as the justices also announced which cases they will review when the court reconvenes in October. Notably, they declined to take additional cases concerning significant rulings this month to eliminate the nationwide right to abortion and expand the right to carry firearms in public. Instead, the justices returned to lower courts more than a half-dozen related matters and instructed those judges to look again at their rulings on the basis of the Supreme Court’s new guidance. In the New York vaccination case, the court had rejected in...

Maryland is continuing to grapple with a recent ruling by the Supreme Court that "proper cause," not be required when applying for a concealed carry permit. The case stemmed out of New York and a law they had passed that required conceal carry applicants to “demonstrate a special need for self- protection distinguishable from that of the general community,” in order to obtain a permit. By a 6-3 margin, the Supreme Court overturned the New York law by stating "the constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense is not a second-class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules than the other Bill of Rights guarantees." In Maryland, the current law is very similar to that of which was deemed unconstitutional in New York. According to the the Maryl...
Former President Donald Trump expressed mixed feelings about former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he would have to consider if he would support him in this fall’s Knesset election. Speaking with Newsmax TV in an interview aired Thursday, Trump was asked whether he would give his backing to Israeli Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu’s bid to return to power in the November 1st election. "I was disappointed with him in certain ways but overall I liked him very much," Trump said. "If he ran, I would certainly give it some thought. We'll see what happens. I don't know that that's going to happen. He disappointed me in certain ways but he also did a very good job in other ways." Trump also addressed a possible presidential run in 20...
North Korean hackers are most likely behind an attack last week that stole as much as $100 million in cryptocurrency from a U.S. company, three digital investigative firms have concluded. The cryptoassets were stolen on June 23 from Horizon Bridge, a service operated by the Harmony blockchain that allows assets to be transferred to other blockchains. Since then, activity by the hackers suggests they may be linked to North Korea, which experts say is among the most prolific cyber attackers. U.N. sanctions monitors says Pyongyang uses the stolen funds to support its nuclear and missile programmes. The style of attack and high velocity of structured payments to a mixer - used to obscure the origin of funds - is similar to previous attacks that were attributed to North Korea-linked actors, ...

At the start of their meeting, President Herzog said: "We are in a period of new elections. Five elections in such a short time are very unhealthy for a country.
