NEW YORK — With 60 of the top names in the American religious Zionist community in tow, the Orthodox Israel Coalition (OIC) debuted its first-ever unified float on Fifth Avenue for the world-renowned Israeli Day Parade on May 22, 2022. The OIC is a broad-based group of the ten major modern-Orthodox organizations in the United States that transformed the landscape of the ‘Parliament of the Jewish People’ after placing second in the 2020 World Zionist Congress elections. For the first time in history, delegates representing the Orthodox community would make up more than a third of the overall congress, and their historic victory uniquely positioned the group to advance religious Zionism through Israel’s national institutions. The group includes the Religious Zio...
"What is the main message that I am supposed to convey here? To tell people to return to the synagogue?" I asked the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, prior to the onset of Shabbat.42 lecturers assembled for a special Shabbat organized by "MIzrachi UK". Each lecturer spoke in several schools, synagogues and auditoriums in the framework of the first Shabbat of its kind - to strengthen Jewish communal ties -- since the end of the pandemic. Thousands gathered in order to be together once again, to pray, to sing, to study Torah as before.I naively thought that the Chief Rabbi would simply want me to call upon people to return to the synagogue, but he answered me otherwise in revealing a profound educational principle:"To ask people to return to the synagogue? We did not come ...

A military cargo plane carrying the first shipment of infant formula from Europe to address a critical shortage in the United States landed in Indianapolis on Sunday. A Feb. 17 recall by top baby formula maker Abbott Laboratories and the closing of its manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan have created one of the biggest infant formula shortages in recent history for U.S. families. President Joe Biden’s administration is seeking to stock empty shelves with 1.5 million containers of Nestle specialty infant formulas. Biden last week invoked the Cold War-era Defense Production Act to help increase supplies. The Sunday plane is carrying 78,000 pounds (35,380 kg) of specialty infant formula, the White House said. “There’s about enough formula on that plane, specialty me...

The National Weather Service issued the warning after 5:30 p.m. when radar detected severe thunderstorms on a line from Richardsmere to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. A group of over 400 Israeli rabbis called Sunday for the Bennett government to be toppled, accusing the government of endangering the lives of Israeli citizens. The Rabbinical Congress “Pikuach Nefesh,” composed of 420 Torah scholars, religious judges, and local and municipal rabbis from across Israel, recently convened an emergency meeting, following a string of terrorist attacks around the country. In a statement issued Sunday, rabbis of the Congress announced that they would send their official, halachically-based opinion to all current government representatives and members of Knesset, informing them that "according to irrefutable rabbinic opinion, every day that the current administration continues to operate in its current fashion, it endangers the very existence o...
'Sadly, in this country, incidents of antisemitism are up 34 percent' In a response to increasing violence and harassment targeting Jews in the United States, the House of Representatives last week passed a resolution to denounce antisemitism. Out of 421 votes, only one member voted against the resolution urging to combat antisemitism by refuting Holocaust denial, addressing online antisemitism on various social media platforms, and improving the security of Jewish communities, including institutions and organizations. "I am so proud that my colleagues united to condemn the rise in antisemitism by sending a powerful message that the US House of Representatives will call out this ancient hatred," Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democratic representative from Florida...
'We are very satisfied with the court's decision' The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Sunday ruled that Jews are now allowed to recite the "Shema" prayer and bow down on the Temple Mount. The decision was taken following an appeal by the legal defense group Honenu against the arrest of three young Jews, detained after praying at the site. They received a 15-day restraining order. The status quo at the site, administered by the Jordanian Waqf, allows Muslims to visit and pray there almost every day, while Jews are not allowed to pray there and can only visit the site on certain days at fixed times.  Judge Zion Saharay said that the recitation of the Jewish prayer "Shema Israel" presents no "reason that could lead to breach of peace," saying three young Je...
Mayor Eric Adams waves Israeli flag, proclaims that 'our city is coming back strong' The streets of New York City turned into a sea of blue and white on Sunday as tens of thousands turned out for the first Celebrate Israel Parade in two years. The annual event was held virtually during the Covid-19 pandemic, with organizers saying that an estimated 40,000 marchers were expected at the largest pro-Israel gathering outside of the Jewish state. New York City Mayor Eric Adams participated in the march, saying that it was an acknowledgement of the special relationship between the city and Israel. "We have the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. Right here in New York... and it's good to be back. New York is back," Adams exclaimed. The mayor then pointed ...
A second suspected case of monkeypox has been detected in Israel, the Israeli Health Ministry announced on Sunday. The second patient, a 27-year-old sailor, arrived in Israel following a trip in Western Europe and has been hospitalized in isolation at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, according to Mako. He is reportedly in good condition, according to the report. The first suspected case was detected on Friday, when a man in his 30s arrived at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center with symptoms of infection. On Shabbos, the Health Ministry’s infectious disease committee held an emergency meeting. Dr. Arnon Shahar, head of the Information and Digital Health Branch at Maccabi Healthcare Services, said there are no concerns about a large pandemic reminiscent of COVID-19, but a...
President Joe Biden said Sunday that the United States is looking into what vaccines might be available to protect people against monkeypox, saying that “everybody” should be concerned as cases continue to spread around the world and some countries beef up their treatment stockpiles. “We’re working on it hard to figure out what we do and what vaccine, if any, might be available for it,” Biden said from South Korea, where he is on an official visit. Biden said the recent spread of monkeypox infections – identified by the World Health Organization in at least 12 countries where the relatively rare disease is not endemic – could be “consequential” if it continues. Health advisers “haven’t told me the level of exposure yet, b...
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the only way out of the war will be through diplomacy – in addition to a Kyiv win on the battlefield – as his chief negotiator ruled out the possibility of a cease-fire that would give Russia control of any captured Ukrainian territory. “Victory will be bloody,” Zelensky said on Ukrainian television, and “the end will certainly be in diplomacy.” Zelensky said the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine is facing an “extremely difficult” situation as Russian forces concentrate on the east after Kyiv gave up its defense of Mariupol and Moscow claimed total control of the port city. Russia is likely to have deployed its only operational company of BMP-T “Terminator” tank support vehicles to Seve...
Former Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has declared the main criminal case against him “dead,” after state prosecutors were forced to alter the charge sheet. The state’s witness in the trial, former Communications Ministry Director-General Shlomo Filber, was cross-examined by Netanyahu’s attorneys throughout the past week. Prosecutors have charged that Netanyahu entered into “bribery relations” with businessman and former owner of the Bezeq telecoms giant Shaul Elovitch. According to the charges, Netanyahu allegedly sent instructions to Filber to promote Elovich’s business-financial interests, and Elovich in return allegedly promoted positive media coverage of Netanyahu at Walla News, which was owned by Bezeq at that time. Netanyahu denies...
