Israelis have a higher-than-average life expectancy than the majority of people living in 38 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, but far fewer doctors, nurses and available hospital beds, according to a report released this week by the intergovernmental economic organization. The annual study, which examines the state of health in member countries from various aspects, looked at data from 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic. It was followed by a supplementary analysis provided by Israel’s Ministry of Health based on the same data. Specifically, the rate of nurses per 1,000 people is one of the lowest in the OECD (4.7 per 1,000). Only Latvia, Greece and Mexico have fewer nurses per capita, said the report. Similarly, the rate of doctors per tho...

Washington, DC, Jan. 28, 2022—Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), representing over 2,000 traditional, Orthodox rabbis in matters of American public policy, today castigated the ADL for repeating the same "misuse of antisemitism for partisan purposes" that CJV slammed last year, after the ADL again accused Fox News Host Tucker Carlson. According to a story in the Daily Beast, the ADL claimed that Carlson "echoed antisemitic tropes" when he asserted that George Soros wants a society that is "more dangerous [and] dirtier." "It is disappointing that the ADL has doubled down on what we called 'grossly misplaced charges of antisemitism' last spring, aimed once again at a favorite target," said CJV Southern Regional Vice President Rabbi Moshe B....

A two-lane bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh early Friday, prompting rescuers to rappel nearly 150 feet (46 meters) while others formed a human chain to help rescue multiple people from a dangling bus. The collapse came hours before President Joe Biden was to visit the city to press for his $1 trillion infrastructure bill, which includes bridge maintenance. There were minor injuries from the collapse but no fatalities, said authorities, who also said they were flying drones to make sure no one is under any collapsed sections. Police reported the span, on Forbes Avenue over Fern Hollow Creek in Frick Park, came down just before 7 a.m. A photo from the scene showed a commuter bus upright on a section of the collapsed bridge. City officials said the collapse caused a gas lea...
Among the many laws discussed in this week’s reading are the laws governing the responsibilities of shomrim — custodians. One of the first details discussed regards a non-paid custodian who claims the item he was entrusted to watch was stolen and he is thus not liable to pay. He must though first approach the court and swear in support his claim it was stolen to be exempt. If we subsequently discover that he kept it for himself and merely sought to exonerate himself by falsely claiming it was stolen, he must make double restitution. The verse that describes his initial ‘cover-up’ reads as follows: ... (he shall approach) ונקרב < (find the thief) ימצא הגנב < (if we cannot) אם לא < The Baal HaTurim points out that the very first letters i...
The first Rashi in our parshah, is bothered why our parshah begins with the words “V’aleh HaMishpatim”, “and these are the Mishpatim”? Why not start “These are the Mishpatim”, without using the word “and”? Rashi’s second explanation* explains that Hashem did so, in order to link our parshah, which discusses civil monetary law, to our previous parshah, which concludes with the laws of the mizbeach; to teach us that the Sanhedrin, which, among other things, rules over civil monetary lawsuits detailed in our parshah, should be located within the Bais HaMikdash complex**, in the same general area as the Mizbeach. Why would Hashem link the two? The Bais HaMikdash represented the highest level of serving Hashem, which was done in such...
“And these are the ordinances that you shall set before them.” (Exodus 21:1) Society is built on laws. Our legal system creates expectations, obligation, and attempts to safeguard the individual from harm and society from decay. Mishpatim is filled with detailed laws regarding damages, fair treatment for servants, charity, and looking out for the needs of the underprivileged. These laws serve to create an atmosphere of justice, fairness, and compassion. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 7b) notes an interesting juxtaposition between the first verse in this week’s Parsha (mentioned above) and the last verse in Parshas Yisro; “And you shall not ascend with steps upon My altar, so that your nakedness shall not be exposed upon it (Exodus 20:23).” The Talmud explains:Bar Kaf...
The multinational firm Unilever, which owns Ben & Jerry’s, announced on Tuesday that in the wake of severe losses, it will fire 1,500 workers around the world and split off its ice-cream division from its food division. The move follows Ben & Jerry’s decision to break its contract with its Israeli licensee, who refused to stop selling the company’s ice-cream in Judea and Samaria. The U.S. states of New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Colorado and Arizona have decided to remove investments from their pension funds in Unilever because the company was found to violate anti-BDS laws that passed in those states. “Unilever continues to run away from its responsibility as a parent company,” said Avi Zinger, director-general of Ben & Jerry&r...
Stocks coughed up another sizable advance, the dollar jumped and gold plunged as investors continued to reprice assets to account for the Federal Reserve’s pivot to restrictive policy. In a dizzying trading session, the S&P 500 erased a rally of almost 2%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 sank to its lowest since June. Tesla tumbled 12% after the electric-car maker pushed back introductions of new models amid supply-chain challenges. Intel dragged down fellow chipmakers on a disappointing profit forecast, while Apple dropped for an eighth straight day ahead of its results. The dollar climbed alongside the two-year Treasury yield. U.S. natural gas futures spiked, a sharp move that could be a sign of bearish wagers being squeezed out of the market. More than $5 trillion has been w...
'When he realized that I didn’t intend to let him drag Israel into a fifth election, he really threatened me' Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett claimed former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened him in a series of interviews released Thursday. Bennett and Netanyahu held a series of meetings in May of last year to attempt to establish a right-wing coalition. Netanyahu reportedly demanded Bennett approve another election cycle, which Bennett didn't agree with. "When he realized that I didn’t intend to let him drag Israel into a fifth election, he really threatened me," Bennett said in an interview with Haaretz. Quoting Netanyahu, Bennett said, "'Listen,' he said to me, 'if I understand correctly what you&rsquo...
