Baltimore, MD - Jan. 19, 2022: Dear Members of Our Bais Yaakov Family, Bais Yaakov of Baltimore’s rich and illustrious history dates back to our founding in 1942. With the passage of time, we can appreciate how the achievements of later generations are in so many ways built upon the wisdom and accomplishments of those who came before us and the foundation they laid. Our Chazal teach us, “Ben Shmonim L’Gevura”, that 80 is the age of strength. With this in mind, today at Bais Yaakov we celebrated the completion of 80 school days in our 80th year.  Baruch Hashem, we have so much to be thankful for. Today, we reflect on our past as Bais Yaakov stands proudly and firmly on the shoulders of the giants who have preceded us over the last 80 years.&...

Marylanders now have until July 15, 2022, to file and pay 2021 state individual income taxes, Comptroller Peter Franchot announced Wednesday. Franchot said the extended deadline is meant to assist taxpayers facing financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The extension waives penalties and interest on outstanding liabilities. "Many people are still struggling to stay above water, so giving taxpayers more time to file and pay will hopefully ease their financial pressure," Franchot said in a statement. "As we approach the two-year mark of the onset of COVID-19, my agency remains as committed as ever to helping Marylanders who still are feeling the pandemic's impact." The Internal Revenue Service, which already has warned of processing delays for the 2022 tax season ...
Baltimore,MD - Jan 18, 2022 - Ahava and Yira-- Love and Awe, these two midos are both elemental to Yiddishkeit. Yet, at times they can seem contradictory or חס ושלום incompatible. The key to a balanced Ahava-Yira relationship will emerge from a syncretic study, connecting Matan Torah back to the formative stage of Yiddishkeit in the days of the Avos.   Click here to listen
We were all shocked by the terrible news that greeted us after havdala this past week. Another brazen antisemitic threat to Jewish lives, this time at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, TX! And so soon after the murders in Pittsburgh, Poway, Monsey and Jersey City. Boruch Hashem, no one was killed or injured, but no doubt the community there was left with deep emotional scars. In light of the recent hostage crisis, the ongoing threat, and the continuing uptick in antisemitic incidents, we must return to our legislators in Congress and implore them to substantially increase funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) for FY 2022 to $360 million. This program provides assistance to nonprofits at high risk of terrorist attack for the purchase of security enhancem...
Muttaqi says 'Humanitarian aid is the short-term solution to economic problems' The Taliban’s acting premier, Mullah Hasan Akhund, urged the world on Tuesday to grant official recognition to the militant group’s government in Afghanistan and ease funding to the state. “I ask all governments, especially Islamic countries, that they should start recognition,” Akhund announced during a news conference attended by a number of United Nations officials in Kabul. During the meeting, Akhund and other senior faction members called for the release of Afghanistan’s overseas assets which were frozen by Washington and other world powers after the Taliban claimed power. “Short-term aid is not the solution; we must try to find a way to solve proble...
Trump's lawyer says the probe is 'merely the latest in a long line of unfounded attacks against my client' New York's top justice official said her investigation into Donald Trump's family business uncovered "significant evidence" of fraudulent or misleading practices, intensifying pressure on the former president as he tries to shut down the probe. In a court filing late Tuesday, state Attorney General Letitia James wrote that the ongoing civil inquiry found that the Trump Organization fraudulently overvalued multiple assets to secure loans and then undervalued them to minimize taxes. She asked a judge to compel Trump and his two eldest children - Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump - to answer questions in the years-long probe that has become a threa...
Relaxing of coronavirus rules seen as concession to critics angry over 'partygate' scandal revelations UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday said most restrictions deployed to fight the latest wave of the Covid pandemic in England would be lifted from next week. The announcement comes as Johnson is on the political hot seat, facing a potential revolt from within the ranks of his Conservative party over revelations of lockdown-breaching parties, dubbed "partygate." Conservative MP Christian Wakeford on Wednesday defected to the opposition Labour party, as a raucous parliament session in London saw no less than five calls for Johnson to resign during weekly questions for the premier.
The airline mainly uses the Boeing 777, a plane particularly affected by the new high-speed wireless service Dubai's Emirates airline announced on Tuesday that it will suspend several flights to the United States as of January 19 until further notice, due to 5G mobile deployment.  The move is "due to operational concerns associated with the planned deployment of 5G mobile network services in the US", the company said. It said the destinations include Boston, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Newark, Orlando, San Francisco, and Seattle. Flights to New York's JFK, Los Angeles International Airport, and Washington DC's Dulles International Airport will continue to operate as usual, the company added. It was one of the most deeply moving answers that I ever received to an interview question.Yesterday I met Or Elharar, the widow of Major Itamar Elharar who was killed from friendly fire last week along with Major Ofek Aharon.  I heard from Or how she met her husband, how they got married at a small Corona wedding in a backyard ("No catering, no wedding hall, but the most important thing, the groom, was there"), and how caring Itamar was ("He made me feel that every minute with me was the most precious thing in the world").She told me that if she had to live her life again, she would do it exactly the same way, even if she knew she would part from him in this manner ("I felt completely whole each day that we were together, and I would do it all over again").At the end, I gently asked ...
Baltimore, MD - Jan. 19, 2022 - Just a few weeks ago, SHEMESH staff and board members gathered virtually to remember our beloved founder and executive director, Dr. Aviva Weisbord, A’H on the occasion of her first yahrzeit. It was both an uplifting and heart-rending meeting as we shared smiles and tears while recalling stories and incidents that characterized Aviva, who was a dear friend and mentor to us all.   Her untimely passing left a huge void in our professional and personal lives, but we are committed to continuing her legacy and fulfilling the important lessons she imparted. SHEMESH, an agency of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, is pleased to announce a new annual lecture series made possible through The Associated and Dr. Aviva Weisbord S...
The Biden administration will begin making 400 million N95 masks available for free to U.S. residents starting next week, now that federal officials are emphasizing their better protection against the omicron variant of COVID-19 over cloth face coverings. The White House announced Wednesday that the masks will come from the government’s Strategic National Stockpile, which has more than 750 million of the highly protective masks on hand. The masks will be available for pickup at pharmacies and community health centers across the country. They will begin shipping this week for distribution starting late next week, the White House said. This will be the largest distribution of free masks by the federal government to the public since the COVID-19 pand...
Is it better to wear an N95 or cloth mask right now? Health experts suggest stepping up protection against the highly contagious omicron variant with stronger masks such as N95s or KN95s. It’s especially important now with health care systems under strain, and with people in higher-risk situations such as crowded, indoor settings for extended periods, says Linsey Marr, who studies viruses at Virginia Tech. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its guidance to recommend the kinds of masks used by health care workers, but also noted it’s important to pick a mask that fits well and that you’ll wear consistently. “Our main message continues to be that any mask is better than no mask,” CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund said in a st...
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson defied calls to resign in a feisty performance Wednesday in Parliament — but it may be too little to prevent a push by his Conservative Party’s lawmakers to oust him over a series of lockdown-flouting government parties. Pressure on the prime minister grew as one Conservative lawmaker defected to the opposition Labour Party and a former Conservative Cabinet Minister told him: “In the name of God, go!” The demand from former Brexit Secretary David Davis came during a combative Prime Minister’s Questions session in the House of Commons, where Johnson defended his government’s record in running the economy, fighting crime and dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. The allegations that Johnson and his staff broke restr...
Rules are everywhere.  In every society, culture, family and group.  What is the difference between baseball and football?  Rules.  From the ancient Laws of Hammurabi to English Common Law which, though not codified, has governed Britain since the twelfth century, laws have defined each society and culture on earth. Every people who ever existed has had rules and laws, yet it is Jews who have been most associated with them.  And not unfairly.  After all, we are a people not simply contained by our laws but unified by our laws, our mitzvot.  Jewish laws.  But if everyone has rules and laws, many of them the same – don’t kill, steal, or commit adultery, teach honor for parents – what makes our Torah, our law, unique?  Ther...
