The leader of the 400 Mawozo gang that police say is holding 17 members of a kidnapped missionary group is seen in a video released Thursday saying he will kill them if he doesn’t get what he’s demanding. The video posted on social media shows Wilson Joseph dressed in a blue suit, carrying a blue hat and wearing a large cross around his neck. “I swear by thunder that if I don’t get what I’m asking for, I will put a bullet in the heads of these Americans,” he said in the video. He also threatened Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the chief of Haiti’s National Police, Léon Charles, as he spoke in front of the open coffins that apparently held several members of his gang who were recently killed. “You guys make me cry. I cry water. But I...
News of the planned meeting also arrives amid US and China updates on their hypersonic missile programs The White House is reportedly planning a virtual discussion between United States President Joe Biden and China’s leader Xi Jinping. US officials are hoping that direct communications with Xi will calm rising tensions between Washington and Beijing. The US is considering holding a video conference call between the leaders, two sources informed Reuters, citing difficulties in navigating both Xi’s hesitancy to travel and China’s vast Covid regulations. However, planning on the meeting is still underway on the matter. “We are still planning details of the virtual bilateral meeting and there is nothing to preview at this time,” a US official said,&nb...
General Electric workers in South Carolina staged a walkout to demonstrate against their government-required COVID-19 vaccinations. The protest began at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday outside GE’s Greenville location and eventually swelled to include about 100 people, including children and some elderly people, according to the State. Some of the employees who walked out ended up driving away from the plant. The GE plant is one of the county’s largest employers and has about 3,200 employees, some of whom said that they took a half day off to demonstrate while others said they didn’t go to work at all on Thursday. Two of the employees, Jason Owens and Shannon Harrill, told the Greenville News they were protesting the vaccine mandate, not GE.
Prime Minister Bennett: • "Our ties with Russia, which were established 30 years ago, mean so much to us because of the past, but also because of the present and the future." • "We will also be talking about the situation in Syria and our efforts to prevent a breakthrough in Iran's military nuclear program". • The basis of our discussion will be the deep friendship between our two nations. We view you as a true friend of the Jewish people." Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and President of Russia Vladimir Putin met for the first time, today (Friday, 22 October 2021), in Sochi, Russia. Following are Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's remarks at the start of the meeting: Thank you for the warm welcome. Relations with Russia, the 30th anniversary of...
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday morning, at the resort town of Sochi along the Black Sea in southern Russia. The visit is Bennett’s first trip to Russia since he was sworn in as premier earlier this year. The meeting began with closed-door talks between the two leaders, with additional Russian and Israeli officials set to join in later, including Israeli national security adviser Eyal Hulata, Bennett’s foreign policy adviser Shimrit Meir, and the prime minister’s top military adviser, Avi Gil. Minister Ze’ev Elkin (New Hope), who has in the past served as an interpreter for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during meetings with Putin, is also set to join the meeting. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the presidential residence in Sochi has ended. At the end of the meeting, the leaders went out to talk on the residence terrace and now they are walking together towards the beach. The Prime Minister's team reports that the meeting "was warm and positive, and dealt with a number of significant issues concerning the two countries". Due to the length of the meeting, the Prime Minister's entourage will remain in Russia for Shabbat and return to Israel Saturday night.
New statistics show 30% of those who died from COVID-19 in Maryland over the last six weeks were fully vaccinated, but experts said those numbers can be deceiving. That number might sound startling, but researchers said to see the full picture, you need to flip that statistic around. They said the vaccines are still very effective. "People who are unvaccinated are on the order of 10 to 15 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than a fully vaccinated person," said Dr. William Moss, of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. And researchers said that's a statistic everyone should pay attention to. The vast majority of hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 are in those who are not vaccinated. "We are seeing younger and younger patients come to the ICU nowadays who are unv...
Kid-size doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine appear safe and nearly 91% effective at preventing symptomatic infections in 5- to 11-year-olds, according to study details released Friday as the U.S. considers opening vaccinations to that age group. The shots could begin in early November — with the first children in line fully protected by Christmas — if regulators give the go-ahead. Details of Pfizer’s study were posted online. The Food and Drug Administration was expected to post its independent review of the company’s safety and effectiveness data later in the day. Advisers to the FDA will publicly debate the evidence next week. If the agency ultimately authorizes the shots, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make the final decision on who ...

Baltimore County, MD - Oct. 22, 2021 - The Pikesville Library is among the busiest branches of the Baltimore County Public Library, drawing thousands of visitors every month. So ensuring the sidewalk conditions in the area are safe for pedestrians — especially along Reisterstown Road — is a top priority. Our office recently received an inquiry about several potential trip hazards, and I want to thank the Baltimore County Department of Public Works for working with us to respond to this issue. We were informed earlier today that the areas of concern have been repaired and made safe for the traveling public. Additionally, there is a cone around the water meter, which will be repaired by MyBGE.
A little more than half of Baltimore city workers have complied with the city’s coronavirus vaccine requirement, city officials said Wednesday, three days after the mandate went into effect. On Monday, when the city’s 14,000 workers were directed to report their vaccination status, Stefanie Mavronis, spokeswoman for Mayor Brandon Scott, said about 48% had complied, but that grew to 56% by Wednesday, The Baltimore Sun reported. The rate mirrors the vaccination rate for city residents, with 56% fully vaccinated, according to state data. Those who aren’t fully vaccinated will be subject to weekly coronavirus testing, city officials have said. Testing is scheduled to begin Monday. The city’s policy states that unvaccinated employees who don’t submit to testing...

On Thursday, October 21, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett dramatically announced that recently vaccinated tourists would be allowed to enter Israel, beginning November 1. This arrangement still requires final government approval. The announcement was welcomed by foreigners, who have been barred from entering Israel for over 19 months. At the same time, Chaim V’Chessed has learned that a side effect of this new process may have a negative impact on student visa holders and their families. In May 2021, after intensive lobbying, the Interior Ministry issued permission for student visa holders to enter Israel despite the overall ban on foreigners. This ruling allowed visa holders residing in Israel to resume normal travel to and from Israel, without needing h...
Klal Yisroel is identified for its Mida of Chesed.  We have numerous Mitzvos instructing us as to the high regard Hashem places on the Mida of Chesed.  Chesed is one of the three things which supports the entire world at all times.[1]  No less than the Shulchan Orech itself states that Chesed is synonymous with being a Jew.[2]  It is one of our inherent characteristics[3].  We all learn from the youngest of ages that we inherited this Mida from our Patriarch Avraham.  Yet, precious little is really told to us in the Torah about Avraham’s remarkable acts of Chesed.  Aside from taking care of Lot, this weeks Parsha seems to be the big story of Avraham’s Chesed.  Shortly after having given himself a Bris, strangers (Malachim) show up at Avra...

'Remain in Mexico' forced more than 65,000 asylum-seekers to wait in Mexican border cities prior to hearings Local governments and communities prepare to assist migrants as the Biden administration considers the reinstatement of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) program. The Trump-era policy, also known as “Remain in Mexico,” forced more than 65,000 asylum-seekers to wait in Mexican border cities - usually Juarez, Tijuana, Matamoros - for their asylum hearings in the US immigration court, according to the Border Report.  Such migrants, Fox News suggested, are crowding the US-Mexico border with intentions to enter the US amid plans of the policy’s reapplication. President Joe Biden suspended the MPP when he took office, but a lawsui...
