Jerusaelm, Israel - Oct. 13, 2021 - On a bright, sunny, and frigid December day in 1987, our family rode the Metro from suburban Maryland to downtown Washington, DC. With our new baby in tow, wrapped in a snowsuit for her first outing, we stood with a quarter of a million people on the National Mall. There were many speakers, but we could hardly hear them over the loud chants of "Let my people go." Three million Soviet Jews were being denied their freedom by the openly antisemitic Soviet regime. This rally was meant to demonstrate to the visiting Premier Mikhail Gorbachev that the Jews in his country who were being oppregssed had the support of the American people.
In the early 1970s, Pamela Braun Cohen became an activist in the Soviet Jewry movement and rose to positions of leaders...

Speaking from the Knesset plenum on Wednesday, far-right Religious Zionism MK Bezalel Smotrich said David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, should have “finished the job” and kicked all Arabs out of the country when it was founded.
During comments on a contentious immigration bill proposed by the opposition, Smotrich shouted about the need to maintain Israel as a Jewish and Democratic state. “Yes, Jewish, with a Jewish majority,” he called out. “With security for the citizens of the State of Israel.”
Smotrich was heckled by several Arab Knesset members and retorted: “I’m not speaking to you, anti-Zionists, terror supporters, enemies,” he said. “You’re here by mistake, it’s a mistake that Ben-Gurion did...

Health officials are urging food manufacturers and services to take drastic action against America’s insatiable appetite for salt.
The Food and Drug Administration has asked food-producing companies to slash the amount of salt in their products by at least 12%, giving businesses 2½ years to hit the mark, according to a statement made Wednesday.
“What we’d like to see is the food industry gradually lower the sodium content,” Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock told NBC News, targeting conventionally purchased foods and groceries — namely, processed and prepackaged foods, such as condiments, snacks and frozen dinners, as well as dishes from chain restaurants.
They hope the new guidance will reduce rates of heart disease — the No. 1 ca...

Around 250 Palestinian prisoners, detained for crimes affiliated with Islamic Jihad, will begin a hunger strike on Wednesday.
The Palestinian Prisoners Club, as reported by The Times of Israel (ToI), announced that they are protesting Israel’s new policies toward Palestinian detainees.
The new practices include breaking up groups of Islamic Jihad prisoners, moving some to other prisons or solitary confinement, and postponing family visits, ToI reported.
Following the escape of six Palestinian inmates from Gilboa prison in early September, Israeli wardens took several measures to reduce chances of another jailbreak.
“There is only one demand: return the situation to the way it was before [the escape],” Prisoners Club director Qaddura Fares said in a...

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday is set to hear the federal government’s bid to reinstate Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s death sentence for his role in the 2013 attack that killed three people and wounded more than 260 others.
Despite President Joe Biden’s stated goal to eliminate capital punishment at the federal level, his administration opted to carry out an appeal — initially launched by the Justice Department under his predecessor Donald Trump — of a lower court ruling overturning Tsarnaev’s death sentence.
No federal inmates had been executed for 17 years before Trump oversaw 13 executions in the last six months of his term.

Who is the wise person? He who sees the future.
- Talmud
“Hashem said to Avram, ‘Go for yourself from your land...to the land that I will show you...’” (Bereishit 12:1) When God sends Avram to the land that “… I will show you…” who among us would have faulted Avram for asking, “What land? What path should I take?” Who among us would have taken issue if he had wanted to know, “When shall I arrive?”
If any one of us received such an instruction, we would more likely ask, “What should I pack?” than simply obey God’s command.
But Avram asked for and received no instruction. Ramban observes that Avram was never told of his ultimate destination, and so he wandered from place to pla...

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., on Tuesday asserted that her Twitter account had been hacked and “erased,” but Twitter told media outlets that her account had not been compromised.
A tweet from Waters’ official congressional account was sent out late Tuesday morning reading: “I have been hacked and my Twitter account has been erased. I know who has done this. I will take care of this. M Waters.”
The tweet itself seemed to confirm that her account had not been erased. Waters also has a personal account, and although no tweets have been sent on it since June 29, it too remained active.
Twitter told Business Insider: “At this time, we’ve identified no signs of account compromise.”
“We can’t comment on the t...

Walgreens, the second-largest pharmacy chain in the United States with nearly 9,000 outlets, will close five stores in San Francisco due to what the company called “organized retail crime.”
CNN has reported that San Francisco has experienced a surge of crime as the COVID-19 outbreak has subsided and tourism has begun to return.
“Organized retail crime continues to be a challenge facing retailers across San Francisco, and we are not immune to that,” said Walgreens spokesperson Phil Caruso, according to SF Gate. “Retail theft across our San Francisco stores has continued to increase in the past few months to five times our chain average.

Another surge in consumer prices in September sent inflation to 5.4% from a year ago, matching the highest such rate since 2008 as tangled global supply lines continue to create havoc.
Consumer prices rose 0.4% in September from August as supply chain disruptions kept many goods scarce. The costs of new cars, food, gas, and restaurant meals all jumped.
The annual increase in the consumer price index matched readings in June and July as the highest in 13 years, the Labor Department said Wednesday. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core inflation rose 0.2% in September and 4% compared with a year ago. Core prices hit a three-decade high of 4.5% in June.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday for the first time authorized an electronic cigarette that the regulator says may help smokers cut back on traditional tobacco cigarettes.
The authorization applies to Vuse’s Solo e-cigarette and its tobacco-flavored nicotine cartridges — which are manufactured by R.J. Reynolds.
Data from the company showed that the authorized model of e-cigarette helped smokers lower their exposure to harmful chemicals in conventional cigarettes.
“Today’s authorizations are an important step toward ensuring all new tobacco products undergo the FDA’s robust, scientific premarket evaluation,” said Mitch Zeller, director of the FDA’s tobacco center, in a statement.
“The manufacturer’s data demonstrates ...

Following the numerous MCI’s in Israel over the past year, specialized training drill held for women unique unit that brings together Jewish and Muslim women from religious communities around the country
Mevaseret - On Tuesday evening in the valley of Emek Ha’Arazim between Mevaseret and Jerusalem, United Hatzalah of Israel held a mass casualty incident (MCI) training exercise for its women’s unit. The simulated drill scenario, which was planned in July, was surprisingly similar to the bus accident that took place near Hurfeish just two weeks ago. The drill simulated a bus of high-school-aged girls falling off of a bridge on a Highway and involved more than 100 simulated patients and more than 60 first responders from the unit, all of whom are trained emergency medical s...

Today, in Eretz Yisrael, it begins. On the seventh of Cheshvan, we begin to pray for rain. In the Amidah prayer, the focal point of the prayer service. Ashkenazim add the words "bestow dew and rain for blessing." How fitting to say these words precisely when rains of blessing have begun to fall in our land. And in the Sephardic community, starting from today, the added words are entirely about abundance. Not only is rain requested, but peace and hope and all-encompassing blessing, as well as deliverance from every type of misfortune and catastrophic circumstance. (Today, in the wake of the pandemic, we understand the importance of such deliverance.) And not only for ourselves do we pray, but for the whole world. Take a moment to read these beautiful words:"Bless for us, Lord our God, this ...

A Texas man was indicted on federal charges for allegedly threatening former Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen over the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the indictment unsealed Tuesday, Scott Eli Harris sent a menacing message from his cellphone on July 12, 2020, to Wen because she supports COVID-19 vaccines. Harris, 51, of Aubrey, Texas, then threatened to shoot Wen, prosecutors said.
"We take seriously threats and intimidation, and this charge makes clear that such conduct will be prosecuted federally," U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron said in a statement. "We will continue to work with our law enforceme...
