The International Judo Federation (IJF) has banned Algerian judoka Fethi Nourine and his coach, Ammar Benkhalaf, from participating in activities or competitions for 10 years after the athlete withdrew from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games to avoid fighting an Israeli opponent. The ruling goes into effect starting from July 23. Nourine and his coach have 21 days to appeal, according to Middle East Monitor. Nourine was scheduled to fight Sudan’s Mohamed Abdalrasool in July in the men’s 73-kilogram weight class at the Tokyo Olympics. If he won, he would have had to face Israeli judoka Tohar Butbul in the next round; instead, Nourine refused to compete in the first draw to avoid a possible match-up. Nourine said he made the decision with the help of his coach in or...
On the 20th anniversary of the deadliest attack on US soil, George W. Bush, who was president at the time, warned of a new danger coming from within the country. “We have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come, not only across borders, but from violence that gathers within,” Bush said on Saturday at the 9/11 memorial site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, during a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. “There is little cultural overlaps between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home… they are children of the same foul spirit, and it is our continuing duty to confront them.” The United States has seen an uptick in homegrown terror threats in recent years, particularly from wh...
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has invited Foreign Minister Yair Lapid to visit Washington, the State Department said Tuesday. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) has privately warned the White House and congressional leaders that he has specific policy concerns with President Biden’s $3.5 trillion social spending dream — and he’ll support as little as $1 trillion of it. At most, he’s open to supporting $1.5 trillion, sources familiar with the discussions say. In a 50-50 Senate, that could mean the ceiling for Biden’s “Build Back Better” agenda — and that many progressive priorities, from universal preschool to free community college, are in danger of dying this Congress. Manchin also has committed to paying for any new spending with new revenue, which will limit the ultimate size of any final package. This amount would be on top of a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructur...

At 8:20 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, Betty Ann Ong spoke in a low voice on an Airfone from the rear of American Airlines Flight 11. Calm and businesslike, she told ground employees: “The cockpit’s not answering. Somebody’s stabbed in business class — and I think there’s Mace … I think we’re getting hijacked.” Betty, 45, had asked to work an extra shift on Flight 11, bound for Los Angeles out of Boston’s Logan Airport, so she could join her sister Cathie for a vacation in Hawaii. But 14 minutes after takeoff, the hijacked plane made a U-turn and headed toward New York City. Thanks to Betty’s furtive phone call, the world knows that terrorists critically wounded flight attendants Karen Martin and Bobbi Arestegui, slit the throat of b...
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced results from a study Friday that found unvaccinated individuals were 11 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than fully vaccinated people.  The research, spanning more than 600,000 people in 13 jurisdictions, also determined that unvaccinated populations were over 10 times more likely to be hospitalized — figures that underscore COVID-19 vaccines protect recipients from deaths and hospitalizations. The study also showed that unvaccinated people were 4 1/2 times more likely to contract COVID-19 than the fully vaccinated.  The studies come just one day after President Biden announced a new rule that would require private companies with 100 employees or more to mandate v...

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, this evening (Saturday, 11 September 2021), commented on the activity of the security forces over the weekend that led to the recapture of four of the terrorists who escaped from Gilboa Prison: "The activity was determined and persistent and the key to success was the smooth and quiet cooperation between all those who took part in the work," Prime Minister Bennett said, adding that, "The quick sharing of information and the precise division of tasks between the security services, which facilitated maximum coverage of the ground, must continue." This morning, Prime Minister Bennett went to the security forces' forward field command center to closely monitor the search. In a series of consultations that he held with security establishment heads over Sha...
An upstate New York hospital said it will pause the delivery of babies in two weeks because of a spate of resignations by maternity unit workers who are objecting to COVID-19 vaccination mandates. Lewis County General Hospital, in Lowville, will temporarily stop delivering babies after Sept. 24, WWNY reported. During a news conference Friday afternoon, Lewis County Health System CEO Gerald Cayer said seven of the 30 hospital workers who resigned were from the hospital’s maternity ward. He added that another seven maternity unit staffers were undecided about getting the vaccine, the television station reported. The workers were objecting to a Sept. 27 deadline to receive a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Watertown Daily Times reported. Then-Gov. Andrew Cu...
Head of Britain's MI5 domestic spy service says vigilance needed against terrorist threats The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan will provide a “morale boost” to extremists plotting attacks elsewhere, and could again give them a base to operate as they did in the run-up to 9/11, the head of Britain’s MI5 domestic spy service said on Friday. Ken McCallum, director general of the Security Service, best known by the initials for Military Intelligence Section 5, told the BBC the threat to Britain from terrorism was “a real and enduring thing." “We do face a consistent global struggle to defeat extremism and to guard against terrorism,” McCallum said in an interview on the eve of the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the Unit...
PA banks in Gaza concerned about punishments and sanctions for financing terrorist activities The Palestinian Authority has withdrawn from an agreement to transfer Qatari aid money to the Gaza Strip over concerns that banks could be exposed to accusations of financing terrorism, the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV channel reported on Friday. Qatar's envoy to the Gaza Strip, Mohammed al-Emadi, said that the PA's announcement came through its banks in the coastal enclave as the Gulf state was preparing to transfer funds to civil servants and poor families in the coming days.
One of the latest pair is a notorious terrorist mastermind Israel has recaptured four of the six Palestinian terrorists who escaped from a high-security prison earlier this week in one of the most spectacular breakouts in the country's history, police said Saturday. Since Monday's breakout, the army has poured troops into the West Bank for a massive manhunt. But the two latest fugitives to be recaptured, who include both a notorious former terrorist leader and the alleged mastermind of the escape, were found hiding in a lorry park just outside Nazareth in northern Israel, police said.  Zakaria Zubeidi is a former militant leader of the Fatah movement of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the West Bank town of Jenin, while Mahmoud Ardah was sentenced to life in priso...
The world solemnly marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11 on Saturday, grieving lost lives and shattered American unity in commemorations that unfolded just weeks after the bloody end of the Afghanistan war that was launched in response to the terror attacks. Victims' relatives and four U.S. presidents paid respects at the sites where hijacked planes killed nearly 3,000 people in the deadliest act of terrorism on American soil. Others gathered for observances from Portland, Maine, to Guam, or for volunteer projects on what has become a day of service in the U.S. Foreign leaders expressed sympathy over an attack that happened in the U.S. but claimed victims from more than 90 countries. “It felt like an evil specter had descended on our world, but it was also a time when many peop...
Agudath Israel of America, together with the Jewish Coalition for Religious Liberty, has filed an amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief asking the United States Supreme Court to hear a case involving whether a professor at a religious college, who performed religious duties, is considered a “minister.” Ministers’ employment falls under what is called the “ministerial exemption,” which protects religious institutions from lawsuits from their ministerial employees about employment decisions. The exemption is designed to maintain the autonomy of religious institutions, and avoid government entanglement with religion, which would violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.   The brief in this case, Gordon College v. ...
