UAV on routine operation lands in Lebanon due to technical feature An Israeli drone fell into Lebanese territory on Friday during routine operations due to a technical failure, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson's Unit. "There is no danger of information being leaked," the IDF said in a statement. Last February, an IDF drone was shot down by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The drone was intended for tactical uses for real-time photography, and fell during an operation. In another incident earlier this year, IDF forces shot down a drone at the Lebanese border after identifying it as it flew over Israeli territory.  Israel is considered a leader in UAV technology, recently hosting aviation teams from five countries for “Blue Guardian," the f...
The flareup is described as post-apartheid South Africa's worst crisis Unrest in South Africa has claimed 212 lives, the government said on Friday, a sharp jump from the 117 deaths announced the previous day. Government minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told a news conference most of the new deaths had been recorded in the southeastern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, the epicenter of the violence, but said the situation was "gradually and firmly returning to normality". South African President Cyril Ramaphosa alleged that deadly violence and looting that have shaken the country over the past week were planned. "It is quite clear that all these incidents of unrest and looting were instigated -- there were people who planned it and coordinated it," Ramaphosa said during a visit to KZN, ...

The meetings were led by the commander of the IAF's Air Defense System, Brig. Gen. Gilad Biran; Commanding Officer of the joint mission headquarters, Brig. Gen. (res.) Doron Gavish; and Brig. Gen. Greg Brady, commander of the 10th US Army Air and Missile Defense Command. "The purpose of the meeting was to improve the collaborative readiness of the forces for the joint defense of the Sta...
U.S. equity markets ticked higher Friday morning as investors digested stronger than expected retail sales data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 75 points, or 0.2%, while the S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq Composite index advanced 0.34% and 0.44%, respectively. The early gains in equities come as retail sales rose 0.6% in June, exceeding the 0.4% decline that analysts surveyed by Refinitiv had expected.  As money rotates into stocks, it is coming out of the U.S. Treasury market with the yield on the 10-year note up 3 basis points at 1.33%.
So, there you are, watching the NFL Super Bowl, the MLB World Series, the NHL Stanley Cup, or the NBA Finals, and as soon as the clock turns to 0:00, the game is over and only one team wins. Have you ever noticed that within seconds, the players and coaches from the winning team are already wearing championship merch (t-shirts, hats, etc.)?  One of the greatest sports-related philosophical questions that has been bothering me for quite some time is the following: Obviously, the merchandise companies make winning championship gear for both teams competing since both teams have the potential to win. So, what in the world do they do with all of the t-shirts and hats that belonged to the loser, the runner-up, the team that did not end up winning? To illustrate, this past year the Kansas ...
The overwhelming majority of adults hospitalized in the United States after being infected with the coronavirus suffered from one or more pre-existing conditions, a new study shows, with more than 99% of COVID patients who died having at least one pre-existing condition. The study, published last week by the US Centers for Disease Control, examined data from the Premier Healthcare Database, spanning nearly 5,000,000 million total hospitalizations at over 800 hospitals across the US from March 2020 to March 2021. Of those nearly five million hospitalizations, eleven percent (540,667) of patients were diagnosed with COVID-19. The vast majority of hospitalized COVID patients, the study found, had at least two pre-existing medical conditions, with close to half of all hospitalized COVID pat...
1. This Shabbat is the last Shabbat before Tisha B'Av and is called Shabbat Hazon (Sabbath of Vision). We read the Torah portion of Devarim and the haftarah begins with the words "A vision of Yeshayahu." 2. Perhaps the word "vision" needs dusting off. In daily life, we do not give it much attention. Tisha B'Av is a reminder of our great story, a story much greater than ourselves. For the last two years, it has seemed that the nation dwelling in Zion had one aspiration - 61. That someone would reach 61 mandates. But it was not to form a government of 61 that we returned to Zion, but rather to return to ourselves after 2,000 years of exile, to be a blessing to the Middle East and to the entire world.3. Words like "redemption" and "holiness" never frightened our forefathers, not in ...
A top Israeli hospital official has expressed the hope that the government will not impose a new lockdown, arguing that fears over the recent string of COVID outbreaks have been exaggerated. Prof. Jonathan Halevy, president and former director-general of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, spoke with Radio 103FM Friday morning about the spread of the Indian or “Delta” variant of the coronavirus, and recent proclamations by government officials regarding the possibility of a new lockdown. “I really hope that we don’t get to another lockdown,” Halevy said, noting that while there has been a significant spike in the number of new COVID cases, the number of seriously ill patients has remained low. “The question is how to look at the ...
A jury on Thursday found the gunman who killed five people at a Maryland newspaper criminally responsible for his actions, rejecting defense attorneys’ mental illness arguments. The verdict means Jarrod Ramos will be sentenced to prison, not a maximum-security mental health facility, for one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in the U.S. Prosecutors are seeking five life sentences without the possibility of parole. The jury needed less than two hours to find that Ramos, 41, could understand the criminality of his actions and conform his conduct to the requirements of the law when he attacked the Capital Gazette newsroom in 2018. Survivors and family members of victims, some with tears in their eyes, embraced outside the courtroom and applauded prosecutors and jurors as they w...

Tisha b'Av is once again upon us. Although we each heartily and with utter faith express daily, 'I await each day that he will come…', nevertheless, if Moshiach does not arrive shortly we are destined to endure at least one more Tisha b'Av. It has been quite a painful year, one filled with much tragedy for our nation. On a personal note, the loss of my dear mother during this year has served to deepen the pain even more. A dear friend, when observing recently how frustrated I was in my inability to share in a common friend's simcha due to my year of mourning, quoted a beautiful sentiment that helped me deal with that anguish. He said, "it is precisely because the joy of sharing in an other's happiness is so great, that we must refrain from experiencin...
The Torah is filled with many beautiful and meaningful mitzvos (commandments). These mitzvos teach us to how to create and sustain a relationship with God and with one another. Imagine for a moment if you were asked, which is the most important of all of God’s commandments? Which mitzvah do you think outweighs the rest? Perhaps, it is Shabbos or Bris Milah (circumcision) both of which are referred to as an “Os” (sign) between God and His nation. Perhaps, it is not any one mitzvah but a unit of mitzvos like the Aseres HaDibros (Ten Commandments), which are the spiritual centerpiece of our Torah. In fact, the great sage, Rav Saadiah Gaon explains that all 613 mitzvos are derivatives of the ...
About 1.8 million out-of-work Americans have turned down jobs because of the generosity of unemployment insurance benefits, according to Morning Consult poll results released Wednesday. U.S. businesses have been wrestling with labor supply shortages as folks capable of working have opted not to work for a variety of reasons. One of the more politically controversial reasons has been the availability of unemployment insurance benefits, in particular emergency provisions that were introduced because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, 26 states opted to cut emergency benefits early with the intention of incentivizing people to take open jobs. Morning Consult surveyed 5,000 U.S. adults from June 22-25, 2021. Of those actively collecting unemployment...
A mural honoring the memory of George Floyd in Toledo, Ohio has collapsed after being struck by lightning Tuesday. According to CBS affiliate WTOL, local officials responded to the Summit and Lagrange Streets after a bolt of lightning struck the side of a building with the mural. The brick wall, along with a major section of the mural, then collapsed into rubble. The piece was created by artist David Ross a year ago. He said it stands as a memorial and reminder to never forget the day Floyd died.
Approximately 70 staffers at Oorah’s The Zone were affected by a carbon monoxide leak this morning at the Cedar Lodge, with many being transported to a local hospital for treatment and observation. Since then, all but one of the staffers have been released from the hospital. The staffer still hospitalized is communicative and in great spirits, but the hospital would like to play it safe and ensure that his oxygen levels are slightly higher before releasing him. Thankfully, no long-term consequences are expected among any of the staffers.
Sefer Devarim encapsulates many of the events which transpired earlier in Sefer’s Shemos, Vayikra and Bamidbar.  Parshas Devarim in particular chronicles much of the travels, wars and mistakes made by Klal Yisroel in the Midbar.  Moshe Rabbeinu singles out the M’raglim for particular criticism in this weeks Parsha.   He similarly brought up the M’raglim with Shevet Reuven and Gad at the end of Parshas Mattos.  At that time, the leaders of Shevet Reuven and Gad had approached Moshe Rabbeinu to request that their Chelek be granted on the “other” side of the Yarden.  Moshe Rabbeinu responded with a blistering criticism of the request, (Mattos 31:1-15) comparing them to the M’raglim who also did not want to go into Eretz Yisroel...
