President Biden on Thursday decried the epidemic of gun violence in America as an “international embarrassment” as he rolled out a series of executive actions intended to address the issue. “Nothing I’m about to recommend in any way impinges on the Second Amendment,” Biden said in the Rose Garden. “They’re phony arguments suggesting these are Second Amendment rights at stake with what we’re talking about. But no amendment, no amendment to the Constitution is absolute.” Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: Click here to Join BJL status for engagements, births, deals, levayos, events & more Join BJL on WhatsApp Groups: Click here to Join an official BJL WhatsApp group for breaking news as it happens “...

In the waning days of the General Assembly session, police reform and COVID-19 are hot topics. In Maryland alone, 3.2 million coronavirus vaccines have been administered as of Wednesday, and police reform laws have received another layer of approval from lawmakers. Gov. Larry Hogan said Thursday that even though he is interested in “some reasonable reforms" to policing, the final package that emerged from talks between the Senate and the House is a nonstarter. “Police reform is an important topic and I think there were a number of positive steps that the legislature had proposed,” Hogan told C4 and Bryan Nehman. “There’s been back and forth between the Senate and the House. The Senate passed nine different bills, some of which were really good. They all got ...

Baltimore, MD - Apr. 7, 2021 - Teachers, You Got Vaccines, But Did You Get Your Energy Booster? Teachers spent an inordinate amount of energy this year recreating themselves and reimagining what teaching can look like. A dose of Inspiration is on the way! “I dreaded going to school every morning. I was afraid someone might be on Zoom,” confessed a 3rd grade teacher who weathered the winter teaching a hybrid class.  As students cycled in and out of school this year, teachers in our local Jewish day school adjusted and adjusted again to each day’s new normal. Teachers had to help the student on Zoom who would interrupt to ask questions that, because of a few second delay, dragged the flow of the class back several paces They had to change lesson plans on a dime, de...

Today, Jews around the world will remember the 6,000,000 Kedoshim who perished in the barbaric flames of the Holocaust. What words can describe the gaping hole that has been left in our collective soul? It has been over 80 years since the Holocaust began but for a people who still mourn the tragedies of thousands of years ago – it seems like yesterday. There are no words, there is no consolation – so many years later we still find ourselves in the state of Mi She’Meyso Mutal L’Fanav (one whose deceased loved one is lying before him) – a state which the Talmud describes as being without nechama (consolation). But we have not succumbed. Despite staggering losses we are still a vibrant people with a...

On the eve of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), hundreds of girls in the Nifgashot workshop interviewed, together with me, Holocaust historian Esther Farbstein. Her remarks included the following:On being an adolescent during the Holocaust: "I was privileged to publish the diary of teenager Rivka Lifshitz, decades after it was written. From the ghetto, Rivka wrote to herself: 'The content of my life I cannot change, but I can change the tune.' This is a beautiful message and an important thought for us today as well. Sometimes things happen that we cannot control, but we can always determine the attitude we wish to adopt, the atmosphere we wish to create, and the tune we wish to sing."
