The United States hit another grim milestone in the coronavirus epidemic on Tuesday when the death toll surpassed 200,000, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The country leads the world by far in both the number of deaths and the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases – which has climbed to over 6.5 million – as officials in several parts of the U.S. begin to loosen restrictions on social distancing rules.
Brazil has the second-highest death toll and trails the U.S. by more than 40,000 fatalities, with India marking the third highest.

The Baltimore City Council has passed a bill to change the name of an obelisk in Northeast Baltimore from the Columbus Monument to the "Police Violence Victims' Monument."
According to The Baltimore Sun, the council still voted 10-4 at its Monday night meeting to approve the legislation.
The bill still needs another vote and the mayor’s signature before going into effect.

As first reported by Chaim V’Chessed, the process for entry of students to Israel was abruptly suspended on Thursday, September 17. At the time, it was unclear whether other entry permits to Israel would cease being issued, as well.

ABU DHABI (VINnews) — For the first time in history, a synagogue in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, opened on Rosh Hashana for public prayers.
Rabbi Levi Duchman, who serves as the rabbi of the 1500-strong local Jewish community, has been active until now in Dubai, one of the seven emirates which make up the UAE, but there has never been official communal prayers in Abu Dhabi until now. Duchman said that he had organized Torah classes and study groups in the capital city previously, but there had never been a public minyan until this Rosh Hashana.

Louisville police have declared a state of emergency as the Kentucky city braces for a grand jury decision on the fate of three cops involved in the police shooting death of Breonna Taylor.
Acting Police Chief Robert Schroeder said Monday that days off and vacation requests for all Louisville Metro Police Department personnel are canceled until further notice pending state Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s announcement on whether the cops involved in the March shooting will face criminal charges.

President Donald Trump said Saturday he’s given his “blessing” to a proposed deal that would see the popular video-sharing app TikTok partner with Oracle and Walmart to become a U.S. company.
Trump has targeted Chinese-owned TikTok for national security and data privacy concerns. The announcement comes just a day after the Commerce Department announced restrictions that if put in place could eventually make it nearly impossible for TikTok fans to use the app.

Bahrain broke up a plot by militants backed by Iran to launch attacks on diplomats and foreigners in the island nation home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, just days after normalizing relations with Israel, Saudi state television reported Sunday.
Bahrain’s Interior Ministry and its state media did not immediately acknowledge the arrests. Bahraini government officials, who routinely claim breaking up plots by militants backed by Iran, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden had another gaffe on Sunday when he said an estimated 200 million people have already died from the coronavirus, even though the number of American casualties is closer to 200,000.
“If Donald Trump has his way, the complications from COVID-19, which are well beyond what they should be — it’s estimated that 200 million people have died — probably by the time I finish this talk,” he said during a campaign speech.
The U.S. population is estimated to be slightly 328 million people, meaning nearly two-thirds of the nation would have perished from the disease by now if Biden’s verbal confusion was true.
