Israeli Coronavirus Czar Prof. Roni Gamzu met Tuesday with Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef to consult with him on halakhic issues related to the fight against the coronavirus. After the meeting, the Chief Rabbi and Prof. Gamzu issued a joint statement in which they implored the public to obey the instructions of the Health Ministry and other relevant authorities. At the beginning of their joint statement, they highlight the health dangers and the need to tighten the guidelines for "dealing with the corona epidemic that has claimed many victims, young and old, healthy and sick." "Our Torah is the Torah of life, and commands us very strongly to protect our lives, and the Torah also said, and to live by it, and as the sages extrapolated in Tractate Yoma 85:B: and not to die by it," the...
No injuries reported to Israeli troops after combined air-ground assault neutralizes terrorists The Israeli army foiled four terrorists trying to place a bomb on the Israel-Syria border, according to a statement early Monday morning. "A short while ago, IDF [Israel Defense Forces] troops thwarted an attempt to place improvised explosive devices (IEDs) near the Alpha Line between Syria and Israel," the IDF spokesperson's unit said. Soldiers of the Maglan special forces, according to Ynet, had taken up clandestine positions along the border when notified of the approaching squad. "IDF troops on the southern Golan Heights, adjacent to an IDF post, spotted a terrorist squad placing explosive devices adjacent to the security fence," the IDF said. Read more at i24
FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court on Monday revived a lawsuit challenging Maryland’s rules for obtaining a handgun as unconstitutionally restrictive. The unanimous ruling from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond reinstates the lawsuit, which was first filed in 2016 and tossed out of court by a federal judge last year. The lawsuit challenges Maryland’s handgun licensing law, passed in 2013, which requires gun purchasers to complete four hours of safety training in addition to passing background checks, being 21 years old and a Maryland resident. The case was initially dismissed because the plaintiffs, including the advocacy group Maryland Shall Issue, lacked standing to sue. But Monday’s ruling determined that one of the plaintiffs &m...

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — There were angry exchanges in the Knesset’s law committee Monday over the issue of foreign students entering the country. Most of those slated to arrive in the coming weeks are Yeshiva students and MK Eli Avidar (Yisrael Beitenu) was quick to accuse the Chareidim of trying to bring disease into Israel with foreign students, stating that “You should be ashamed because you brought people from Brooklyn and infected your own people in Bnei Brak and Beitar Illit. You are public criminals who act irresponsibly towards your citizens. There should be equality and everyone should be allowed in, but you are allowing only Chareidim.” Committee chairman Yaakov Asher (UTJ) responded that “it is a shame and disgrace, this is antisemitism. You gained a...

The Torah enumerates the seven minim of Eretz Yisroel in Devarim 8:8. The Gemara in Brachos 41b tells us that when it comes to which fruit comes first regarding brachos and chashivus we look to see which fruit is written first in the posuk. In addition, the posuk mentions the word eretz twice, so we say that whatever fruit is closer to the word eretz comes first. If there is a tie, then the one closer to the first eretz comes first. The Rema brings this down lehalacha in Orach Chaim 211:4. The question is, why does the posuk depict it in this way that whatever fruit is closer to eretz comes first? We could have written the...
According to a professor at Iran’s Tehran University, burning U.S. flags will help Iran establish solidarity with protesters in the United States. In an interview with Iran’s Ofogh TV on July 18, professor Foad Izadi said, “We aren’t burning enough American flags.” It was important to do so, he said, because “we need to prioritize our target audience if we want to start acting in America.” That audience, he said, was “Americans who have been hurt by America.” Those Americans “who are tearing down statues and burning flags.” When these people see Iranians burning U.S. flags, he said, this will create “relations and solidarity between us.” While some Americans would be offended, they would still wond...
The Trump administration is considering taking “a number of options” without congressional approval as negotiations on the fourth coronavirus stimulus relief package are stalled between the White House and lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Fox News has learned. A senior administration official told Fox News Monday that the administration is weighing taking unilateral action to quell the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. “As the negotiations continue to progress as a snail’s pace, the administration is considering a number of options that might be available without congressional legislative action,” the official told Fox News. One group will include Partner and HOT Mobile, another Cellcom and XFONE, with Pelephone the only one of the cellular companies to enter the race by itself. The tender will be managed by Tal Elimelech, senior director for regulation and economy at the Ministry of Communication. The telecom companies are entering the tender in a difficult situation, with their fina...
President Trump on Monday morning threatened legal action over a bill passed by the Nevada legislature to send mail-in ballots to all voters ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election. The legislature on Sunday pushed through the bill despite objections from Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, the only statewide Republican elected official, on a party-line vote. It would give Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak the power to command the secretary of state to adjust election procedures during a state of emergency. The bill also expands who can turn in ballots, a provision many Republicans in the state said could open the door for ballot harvesting. “In an illegal late night coup, Nevada’s clubhouse Governor made it impossible for Rep...
Don’t expect presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to name his running mate this week. A source familiar with the process of choosing the running mate told Fox News on Monday that “an announcement isn’t likely this week.” Various reports over the weekend indicated that the former vice president and his team were extending the vetting process of the contenders in the running mate search by a week to two weeks.
