Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir on Sunday said if 85-90% of Americans would wear a facial mask and avoid crowds, the coronavirus infection protection would be equivalent to “a complete shutdown” of the nation. In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Giroir, a four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, said there is “really good data now” to prove the point. “Both for the red zone states and the emerging yellow states, we have really good data now, both theoretical and data from places like Arizona, Texas and Florida, that if you do simple measures, like avoid the indoor crowded places, and a lot of times that are indoor bars, but you can’t have 100 people at your house eit...
House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Sunday that he doesn’t think President Trump plans to peacefully leave the White House and instead wants to attempt to use emergency powers to extend his term. Clyburn told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he does not think Trump ever planned to “peacefully transfer power.” “I don’t think he plans to leave the White House,” he said. “He doesn’t plan to have fair and unfettered elections. I believe that he plans to install himself in some kind of emergency way to continue to hold onto office.” “And that is why the American people had better wake up,” he added. Read more at The Hill.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday threw cold water on the prospect of extending $600-per-week unemployment benefits for Americans for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Mnuchin suggested that the payments, which expired last week, led to some out-of-work Americans being “overpaid” and indicated that he believed they were slowing the return of workers to the labor market. “Unemployment is supposed to be wage replacement, so it should be tied to some percentage of wages,” he said. “The fact that we had a flat number was only an issue of an emergency where we had 30-year-old computer systems.” “I think on the concept we absolutely agree on enhanced unemploym...
The recent Salmonella Newport outbreak that has hit the U.S and infected nearly 400 people may be linked to several onion brands, according to announcements from the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control. President Trump announced Sunday that the U.S. government “must” again pursue the death penalty for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, after a federal appeals court Friday threw out the death sentence because the judge who oversaw the case did not adequately screen jurors for potential biases. A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ordered a new penalty-phase trial on whether 27-year-old Tsarnaev should be executed for the 2013 attack that killed three people and wounded more than 260 others. “Rarely has anybody deserved the death penalty more than the Boston Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev,” Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday. “The court agreed that this ‘was one of the worst domestic terrorist attacks si...
Eight troops missing after their landing craft sank off the Southern California coast during a training exercise are presumed dead, the Marine Corps announced Sunday. The Marines said they had called off the search that started late Thursday afternoon when the amphibious assault vehicle sank with 15 Marines and one Navy sailor aboard. Eight Marines were rescued, but one later died and two are in critical condition. The 26-ton, tank-like craft took on water and quickly sank in hundreds of feet of water — too deep for divers — making it difficult to reach. Read more at NEWSMAX.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu railed on Sunday at swelling protests against his rule, saying they are egged on by a biased media that distorts facts and cheers on the demonstrators. In a six-minute rant at a meeting of his Cabinet, Netanyahu slammed the media for “inflaming” the protests and for misrepresenting incidents of violence against the protesters. “There has never been such a distorted mobilization — I wanted to say Soviet but it has already reached North Korean terms — of the media in favor of the protests,” he said. Netanyahu said the media ignored “wild and unfettered incitement, including daily calls — including the day before yesterday — to murder the prime minister and his family.” Read more at ...
Israel is “not interested” in confrontation with Hezbollah, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) official told Al Jazeera on Sunday as tensions on the Lebanese border have peaked over the past week. “We will respond in force to any attack by Hezbollah, and infrastructure in Lebanon will be among our targets,” the anonymous source warned. But the military official stressed that Jerusalem’s main concern lies with preventing Iran’s establishment in Syria, therefore “we do not intend to conduct a preemptive strike against Hezbollah or Lebanon,” he noted. A small plane bound for Australia crashed shortly after takeoff in Papua New Guinea last week – partially because it was weighed down by $80 million worth of cocaine stowed as cargo. Five men who are members of a Melbourne-based crime syndicate were arrested in Australia and charged with conspiring to import 500 kilograms, or about 1,102 pounds, of cocaine from Papua New Guinea into Queensland, Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a statement released on Saturday. The suspects face life in prison if convicted. Read more at Fox News.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared Sunday that she has “no confidence” in top White House coronavirus adviser Deborah Birx, just days after Pelosi reportedly called Birx “the worst” in a closed-door meeting and said the White House coronavirus team was in “horrible hands.” At the same time, Pelosi has praised Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH), as a “hero.” Democrats have largely turned on Birx after a thinly sourced article in The New York Times criticized her for defending President Trump — but Fauci, who has repeatedly changed his view on key aspects of the pandemic, is now seen as more willing to c...
The Islamic State (IS) group, staying in the shadows for the most part of the last 12 months, seems to be making a resurgence. While the terrorist group has weakened in recent years, under the new leadership of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi IS has been regrouping and regaining its strength amid the unstable situation in Syria, Iraq and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula — exploiting the coronavirus pandemic crisis in the region as well, according to The Africa Report (TAR). Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) has tested positive for COVID-19 after being in Washington, D.C., this week, becoming the latest member of Congress to be diagnosed with the disease. “While I cannot blame anyone directly for this, this week has shown that there are some Members of Congress who fail to take this crisis seriously,” Grijalva said in a statement to the Arizona Republic. Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller on Sunday declared the president is all for the election to proceed Nov. 3, seeking to tamp down criticism of a tweet suggesting the vote date ought to be delayed because of concerns about fraud. In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Miller denied the commander in chief was in favor of any kind of delay. “The election is going to be on November 3. President Trump wants the election on November 3,” Miller said. Read more at NEWSMAX.
President Donald Trump has agreed to give China’s ByteDance 45 days to negotiate a sale of popular short-video app TikTok to Microsoft Corp, two people familiar with the matter said on Sunday. U.S. officials have said TikTok under its Chinese parent poses a national risk because of the personal data it handles. Trump said on Friday he was planning to ban TikTok in the United States after dismissing the idea of a sale to Microsoft. But following a discussion between Trump and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the Redwood, Washington-based company said in a statement that it would continue negotiations to acquire TikTok from ByteDance, and that it aimed to reach a deal by Sept. 15. Baltimore City officials are preparing for potential flooding Monday into Tuesday in low-lying areas throughout the city as a result of Tropical Storm Isaias.
