Former defense secretary Jim Mattis excoriated President Trump on Wednesday, accusing the nation’s chief executive of deliberately trying to divide Americans, taking exception to his threats of military force on American streets, and praising those demanding justice following the police killing of George Floyd. “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people – does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis wrote in a statement published by the Atlantic. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership,” he continued. “We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inh...
Two police officers were shot and a third was stabbed in a confrontation with a suspect in Brooklyn late Wednesday night, police and sources said. The melee unfolded when a suspect approached a cop on Church Avenue near Flatbush Avenue at about 11:45 p.m. and stabbed him in the neck, a police source said. Several cops responded to the scene and one pulled his firearm. The officer and the suspect then struggled for the weapon, which went off striking one officer in the hand and another in the arm. The suspect was eventually subdued and taken to the hospital in police custody. Read more at THE NY POST.
The Palestinians’ only option now is to “entirely reject” the U.S. peace plan and sever relations with the United States and Israel, according to PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat. Speaking during a May 30 interview on Russia Today, Erekat said that the U.S. “Peace to Prosperity” plan was “the most biased plan in the political history of the effort to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is the most biased, blind, extreme and racist plan.” Faced with such a plan, said the Palestinian official, “We have no option but to reject it completely, and to sever all our ties with the Israelis and the Americans.” The PLO had not been established to improve Palestinians’ living conditions, said Erekat, but to “restore a so...

The coronavirus isn’t mutating to become more dangerous, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. Scientists around the world studying the virus have not found it to be mutating in a way that could pose a new threat, as some health officials feared early on, WHO infectious disease epidemiologist Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove said at a briefing. “There are normal changes in this virus that one would expect over time,” she said, referring to the ways in which RNA viruses like the flu and the coronavirus mutate. “None of these changes so far indicate that the virus itself is changing in terms of its ability to transmit or to cause more severe disease.” Read more at THE NY POST.

The Senate passed legislation Wednesday to provide more flexibility to small businesses that have received forgivable loans under the Paycheck Protection Program, giving them more time to use the money just ahead of a deadline to forgive the first round of payments. The legislation passed by unanimous consent and now goes to President Donald Trump’s desk, following House passage of the bill last week. The White House has not said whether Trump will sign the bill, but the president has indicated support for the goals of the legislation. The central goal of the legislation is to allow businesses 24 weeks – instead of eight – to spend loans they receive under the Paycheck Protection Program and have the money forgiven. The restaurant industry and other business groups had ...

The trial was held in the open sea to demonstrate LORA’s capabilities to an IAI customer Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has completed a dual operational firing trial with LORA (Long-Range Artillery Weapon System), a precise ballistic strike missile. The trial was designed and performed under COVID-19 restrictions as part of IAI’s work plan, which includes demonstrating the capabilities of the advanced system to customers. Held in the open sea, the trial included the launch of two long-range LORA missiles to a pre-defined hit point at sea. The complex trial included two scenarios to test and demonstrate LORA’s advanced capabilities. The first scenario involved a shor...
One of the world’s most coveted coins is coming to the market. The Brasher Doubloon, the first gold coin struck in the U.S., is being offered privately at a $15 million asking price, according to numismatic adviser Jeff Sherid. His firm, Los Angeles-based PCAG, is marketing the coin on behalf of a collector he would only identify as a former Wall Street executive. The doubloon is dated 1787 – 11 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the same year the Constitution was written and five years before the federal mint opened in Philadelphia. Metalsmith Ephraim Brasher, George Washington’s next-door neighbor on New York’s Cherry Street, privately minted a small batch of the coins and punched this unique version with his hallmark “EB” on the...
Former president Barack Obama presented an optimistic take on the civil unrest that has griped the nation, urged mayors to enact policing reforms developed during his administration and spoke directly to young people of color, telling them “your lives matter.” In his first public remarks since protests over the death of George Floyd alighted cities coast to coast, the nation’s first African American president described the events of the last week “as profound as anything that I’ve seen in my lifetime.” Yet, observing the protests, Obama said he sees an awakening in the country to the challenges and fears black Americans endure. The confluence of the coronavirus pandemic’s disparate effect on black communities and the killing of Floyd, a black man...
The day after a primary election beset by ballot problems, Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford said at Wednesday's Board of Public Works meeting that it may be time for new leadership at the Maryland State Board of Elections. His boss, Gov. Larry Hogan, demanded a report on what went wrong Tuesday and suggest lawmakers undo a change to election law he said they might not have thought through. "The leadership over the state board of elections has known... they'd have to do things differently and they needed to plan for a primarily mail-in election," Rutherford told Yuripzy Morgan on Wednesday afternoon. Linda Lamone was appointed as the state administrator of elections in 1997. She was already on thin ice, as far as Rutherford is concerned, after problems with voting machines in 2014, the...
Another 1.87 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, but with all 50 states gradually reopening their economies, the job losses triggered by the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown are beginning to slow. Economists surveyed by Refinitiv forecast 1.8 million. The weekly jobless claims report from the Labor Department, which covers the week ended May 30, pushes the 11-week total of losses since states directed residents to stay at home and forced nonessential businesses to roughly 42 million, a rate of unemployment unseen since the Great Depression. Still, the report suggests the worst is over for the labor market: It marks the ninth straight weekly decline of Americans seeking jobless benefits sinc...
During the nine days, one of the Haftoros which we read is in Yirmiya.  The Haftorah discusses how Hashem will forgive our misdeeds and explains one of the reasons for this is because Lechtech Acharai Bamidbar b’Eretz Lo Zoruah -we had a blind faith in him when we followed him out into a dessert where nothing grew.   Shortly thereafter, Hashem provided us with a well and Manna to sustain us during our journey to Eretz Yisroel. We too have been in a “new world” for the last few months and as we begin to see an end to this existence, it is worth remembering lessons from our ancestors in the Midbar.  When they first received the Manna, they were not pleased.  They called it “funny bread”.  They were not used to its properties &ndash...
Baltimore, MD - June 3, 2020 - On the one hand, bitachon teaches us to accept that whatever Hashem does is good. So why would a change ever be necessary? Yet, in those dark or difficult moments, bitachon instructs us to pour out our hearts asking for a yeshua; we should never despair that a change could come in the blink of an eye. How do we reconcile this apparent contradiction? Peering Behind the Veil of Despair from Rabbi Goode on Vimeo.
CINCINNATI, OHIO (VINnews) —University of Cincinnati researchers in conjunction with three Italian universities studied neuroimaging and neurological symptoms in patients with COVID-19. The new study may shed light on the virus’s impact on the central nervous system, which until now has not been properly researched, according to a report in Newswise. The findings, published in the journal Radiology, reveal that altered mental status and stroke are the most common neurological symptoms in COVID-19 patients. “Studies have described the spectrum of chest imaging features of COVID-19, but only a few case reports have described COVID-19 associated neuroimaging findings,” says lead author Abdelkader Mahammedi, MD, assistant professor of radiology at UC and a UC Health n...
OAKLAND, CAL. (VINnews) — A class-action suit was filed Tuesday against internet browser Google for allegedly violating the Federal Wiretap Act by tracking and collecting information about users even when they used the private browsing mode in an attempt to maintain their privacy, according to a report by the New York Times. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, also claimed that the company had violated a California law that requires consent of all parties to read or learn the contents of private communication. The lawsuit, which was filed by Mark C. Mao, a partner at the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner, alleged that Google uses other tracking tools it provides to website publishers and advertisers to keep tabs on what websites the ...
NEW YORK (VINnews) — Social media giant Facebook announced Tuesday that it had shut down pages and accounts associated with what it claimed was a hate group, whose members were discussing bringing weapons to the protests happening across the country, according to a report by CNN. The company said it had observed people associated with the group American Guard discussing such action. The group claims it’s goal is to tout American constitutional nationalism, but the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) says American Guard “has a background with connections to anti-immigrant extremism, hatred, and violence. Indeed, before the American Guard was the American Guard, it was actually the Indiana chapter of a group called the Soldiers of Odin USA, a branch of an extreme anti-immigrant a...

WASHINGTON (JNS) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo forewarned on Monday that “a series of announcements” from the Trump administration will be issued against the International Criminal Court. “I think that the ICC and the world will see that we are determined to prevent having Americans and our friends and allies in Israel and elsewhere hauled in by this corrupt ICC,” he said in a podcast hosted by the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. “I don’t want to get ahead of the announcements we’re going to make in the coming days, but I think you’ll see,” he added. The ICC is investigating whether war crimes have been committed by the United States in Afghanistan and by Israel during the 2014 summer war with Gaza (th...
