Hundreds of doctors wrote a letter to President Trump this week asking him to end the coronavirus shutdown, saying it is a “mass casualty incident” spurring deaths from other factors such as substance abuse and suicides. The letter, shared online, estimates about 150,000 Americans each month that the shutdown remains in place would have had new cancer detected, millions more are missing dental exams that could discover problems linked to heart disease, while others are experiencing domestic violence like child abuse. “Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%,” the letter sent to the president on Tuesday read. The letter adds, “We are alarmed at what appears to be the lack of consideration for the future health of our patients. … It is impossib...
Police in Peoria, Ill., are investigating nine broken windows at a shul in the city. Authorities believe the vandalism at Congregation Anshai Emeth, which houses the Hebrew Day School, occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, when it was reported to law enforcement. “It is under investigation by a detective, and at this point, there is no suspect information,” said Officer Amy Dotson, public-information officer for the Peoria Police Department. “No entry was made, and nothing in the chapel appeared to be disturbed.” She said the windows were broken by either rocks or bricks, and among the rooms impacted were classrooms and a kitchen. Dotson added that “we do have issues with kids and vandalism. I wouldn’t say it’s prevalent to houses o...

Former attorney general Jeff Sessions hit back at his former boss, President Donald Trump, on Friday night in their long-running disagreement over whether Sessions should have recused himself from the Russia interference investigation that consumed the first two years of Trump’s presidency. Sessions, who is running in Alabama to regain the Senate seat he left when he became Trump’s attorney general in 2017, faces a Republican primary runoff July 14 against former college football coach Tommy Tuberville. Trump has backed Tuberville, in large part because he is still angry that Sessions stepped away from the Russia case in early 2017, shortly before special counsel Robert Mueller III was appointed to take over the investigation. The president tweeted Friday evening: “3 y...

It’s a startling sight for any visitor to two U.S. cemeteries supposedly reserved for the remains of those who served their country in uniform: Swastikas emblazoned on the tombstones of three World War II-era German POWs who died in captivity, complete with messages honoring Adolf Hitler. The campaign to remove the Nazi symbols from the Veterans Administration-run graveyards in Texas and Utah — where they sit alongside memorials to fallen American service members — is rapidly gaining momentum, picking up support from a pair of influential lawmakers and prominent anti-hate groups who say the symbols represent a national disgrace. That effort gained steam this week when Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Florida Democrat who became the state’s first Jewish congresswoman...
Dozens of branches of Hatzalah emergency medical services, which operate volunteer first responder networks in Jewish communities around the world, collectively raised an unprecedented $15 million from some 83,000 donors last week amid the coronavirus pandemic. It was a remarkable statement of the community’s thanks to a group that has helped thousands of lives. An 18-hour global telethon united 47 Hatzalah chapters worldwide in a jam-packed concert with some of the best Jewish musicians in the world. Hatzalah chapters from the United States, Australia, Europe, Canada, Israel, South America and elsewhere were recipients. “We were giving back,” event producer Davidi Crombie told The Algemeiner. The talent was deep. The show included Jewish rock group 8th Day and modern...
A woman has died in the Gaza Strip after contracting coronavirus, the Palestinian enclave’s first known fatality from the global pandemic, the health ministry said on Saturday. Gaza, run by the Islamist group Hamas, has reported only 55 coronavirus infection cases among its population of two million. Meanwhile, in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank there have been two deaths and 423 cases. The Gaza health ministry described the fatality as a 77-year-old woman who had entered via the Egyptian border on May 19 and had been kept in quarantine since. She suffered from a prior chronic illness, the ministry said. Hamas, which has run Gaza since 2007, has closed crossings with Egypt and Israel except for essential traffic, but unlike in the West Bank it said a...
The Federal Bureau of Investigations will conduct an internal review of the probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. On Friday, the FBI announced it will review the investigation to see if there was any misconduct on behalf of the agents involved in the case and if any disciplinary action is needed. It is unclear how many of the investigators linked with the probe are still part of the FBI, but many of the key figures, including ex-Director James Comey, his deputy Andrew McCabe and agent Peter Strzok are already out. NEW YORK (JNS) – For Sarit Haviv, 53, of Mill Basin in Brooklyn, N.Y., the toughest part of having COVID-19 was seeing her beloved husband of 30 years, Shlomo Haviv, become ill after she did, and then summoning the strength while sick herself to fight for him to receive the care he needed. But with help from her family and community, she did it. On March 17 after returning by plane from a short trip to Michigan, the Havivs, who own an entertainment business, noticed symptoms. Sarit developed body aches, fever and a light cough. The next day, Shlomo, who is in his 60s, developed a backache. His fever spiked as high as 103 degrees. Unsure what type of flu they had—and fearing the coronavirus—the couple told their son and daughter-in-law, 20-somethings who live next doo...

President Donald Trump’s administration discussed the possibility of holding a nuclear test — America’s first since 1992 — as a message to Russia and China, the Washington Post reported Friday. The newspaper cited one senior current official and two former members of the administration as saying that the discussion was held on May 15. One of the sources told the newspaper that a show of a “rapid test” capability would be a valuable negotiation tool as Washington seeks to set up a trilateral agreement on nuclear weapons with Moscow and Beijing. The conversation reportedly produced no decision, and there was no certainty whether the prospect was ever discussed further. Read more at i24NEWS.
The siyum, planned to be an international event, with participants worldwide joining together, has been cancelled due to the virus. However, as Rabbi Zacharia Adler, the indefatigable Director of Daf Hashavua explains, the Siyum will still go one, albeit in an unusual way. “All the people that have learned the Daf for years definitely deserve the best Siyum possible”, explains R’ Zacharia, “therefore we plan on a virtual Siyum with someone being Mesayem, the beginning of Masechta Yevamos, and lively music in honor of this great accomplishment.” The Siyum will also feature Divrei Chizzuk from leading Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshivos, urging the Lomdim to continue their never-ending work of toiling in the Torah, with the beginning of Masechta Yevamos, a difficult an...

New deaths in New York from covid-19 dropped below 100 for the first time since just after the state went under lockdown, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday, calling it “a sign that we are making real progress.” The state had 84 new fatalities. “What we’re doing is working,” Cuomo said, almost three months after the state’s first coronavirus case was diagnosed on March 1. At the start of Memorial Day weekend, the governor spoke largely of progress. Friday night he issued an unexpected order allowing groups of up to 10 people to gather anywhere in the state, as long as they maintained social distancing guidelines. Cuomo said that Long Island, hard hit by the virus, could begin reopening as early as next week, as could the seven-county mid-Hudson regio...

Speaking at the Yom Yerushalayim ceremony on Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance of a unified Yerushalayim under Israeli sovereignty for the vision of Israeli-Palestinian peace put forward by President Donald Trump. “When I visited Washington at the beginning of the year for the presentation of President Trump’s vision for peace, he announced that according to his vision, Yerushalayim will remain the undivided capital of Israel,” Netanyahu said at the ceremony at the Ammunition Hill site marking the 53rd anniversary of the capital’s reunification following the Six-Day War. “This is important for Yerushalayim. This is important for our people. This is important for the State of Israel,” the leader stressed. Read more...
Hertz Global Holdings, the car-rental company founded with a dozen Ford Model Ts over a century ago, filed for bankruptcy late Friday after sweeping travel restrictions and the global economic collapse destroyed demand for its vehicles. The Chapter 11 filing in Delaware allows Hertz to keep operating while it devises a plan to pay creditors and turn around the business. The second-largest U.S car-rental-car company does not need debtor-in-possession financing for now, according to a person familiar with the matter, because it has more than $1 billion cash on hand. Hertz’s court petition listed about $25.8 billion in assets and $24.4 billion of debts, and its biggest creditors include IBM Corp. and Lyft Inc. After the coronavirus pandemic decimated revenue, the car renter sought rel...
After years of probes, immunity battles, High Court decisions and a corona delay, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will go down in history on Sunday at 3 p.m. as the first sitting prime minister to go on trial for public corruption.Just as the indictment against Netanyahu, represented by Amit Hadad and Micha Feitman, was a major cause of the 18-month election-deadlock, the trial will hover as a cloud over virtually all major government decisions for the foreseeable future. On Saturday night, Netanyahu’s lawyers filed a complaint with the state prosecution against Channel 13’s Raviv Drucker. They said that by interviewing witnesses for the prosecution and presenting a threatening narrative of the legal consequences against any of those witnesses who recant t...
A preliminary study of the antiviral drug remdesivir found that the use of it alone does not cure patients who are experiencing severe symptoms of COVID-19.  Data posted in the New England Journal of Medicine Saturday showed it shortened the amount of days patients experienced severe symptoms, but did not have a great enough impact on the mortality rate of the patients studied.  "Preliminary results of this trial suggest that a 10-day course of remdesivir was superior to placebo in the treatment of hospitalized patients with Covid-19," the researchers wrote.  The researchers tested 1,063 patients in the first double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to test the drug. Neither patients nor doctors knew which patients received the drug and which didn’t until af...
