Americans are keenly interested in the cash payments included in the coronavirus relief bill that is soon expected to become law. Under the bill, millions of households will receive rebates in the amount of $1,200 per adult and $500 per child. The amounts phase out for individuals making more than $75,000 and married couples making more than $150,000. The Senate passed the bill late Wednesday, and the House is expected to pass it Friday. Trump is expected to sign the legislation. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimated in an analysis released Thursday that the rebates will reduce federal revenue by $292 billion over a decade, with all of the revenue loss occurring in fiscal years 2020 and 2021. Many people are facing financial challenges as a result of the coronavirus and have q...
The coronavirus has killed 385 New Yorkers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday — with a startling leap of 100 fatalities in the span of just 24 hours. That staggering toll represents a triple-digit hike from the 285 cases Cuomo reported on Wednesday, among 37,258 confirmed cases now tallied statewide. “This is the really bad news,” said Cuomo in his now-daily Albany press briefing. “That’s the worst news you can have.” Read more at THE NY POST.

New York hospitals can now attempt to treat two coronavirus patients with a single ventilator, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday, a move that could help the state make better use of its scarce supply of lifesaving breathing machines as the outbreak continues to surge. New York-Presbyterian Hospital has developed a split-ventilation protocol that has been shared with the New York State Department of Health, which quickly approved the practice. Calling the technique “not ideal, but workable,” Cuomo said ventilator splitting may be necessary given some projections that suggest the state may need as many as 30,000 ventilators in the coming weeks. In a letter today to governors, President Donald Trump said that his administration was preparing new coronavirus social distancing guidance that could potentially be more relaxed. According to CNN, the guidelines would depend on geographic risk factors determined by the country’s “expanded testing capabilities.” “High-risk, medium risk and low-risk” counties would receive different guidance depending on their classification so states could decide on “maintaining, increasing or relaxing social distancing and other mitigation measures they have put in place.” Trump announced 15-day social distancing measures last week, but has since indicated that he’d like to loosen them so the country would be up and running by mid-April. “There is st...

Baltimore, MD - Mar. 26, 2020: Dearest Baltimore Community, As I sit in my home-office, I am compelled to share with you my thoughts. On a regular day: I get up at 6 am and go to Daf Yomi, drive my son to yeshivah, hurry back to shul for Shacharis, rush back home, and grab a bite before staring my busy work day. The day would start with reviewing all medical cases with our Service Coordinator and the heads of our various service departments. On a regular day: I would be busy visiting patients in Sinai, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, GBMC and any other hospital with a member of our community. On a regular day: I would be meeting a doctor, speaking to care-management staff, a physical therapist or another clinician. I would be sitting in my office doing research, consulting ...

Human-rights activist, world-famous refusenik and former chairman of the Jewish Agency Natan Sharansky shared some pointers to help people get through coronavirus-related quarantine in a video released on Monday. “I have some experience of spending time in solitary confinement,” Sharansky said in the clip, “and I want to give you five tips.” The author of Fear No Evil was born in 1948 in the Soviet Union; at the age of 29, he was arrested for engaging in Zionist activity, he said. He was imprisoned for nine years in Soviet labor camps, half of which he said was in solitary confinement, and spent 405 days in a punishment cell. He was released in 1986 after heavy international pressure, including U.S. diplomatic efforts and humanitarian efforts led by his wife Avit...
The Israeli airline El Al is requesting $200 to $300 million in loans from the state to overcome the challenging situation caused by the coronavirus. “Our situation worsens with each passing day,” El Al CEO Gonen Usishkin wrote in a letter to employees, the business daily Globes reported on Wednesday. “We’re approaching the point at which the state must decide whether it wants a national airline, or whether it believes that aviation security is not an important and substantial element in national security.” The fact that the letter was published seems to indicate that the company wants it known in order to increase pressure on the government. Usishkin mentioned El Al’s efforts in returning Israelis from Australia, Peru and other locations as examples ...

The Israelis have been unable to leave Hungary since the country has closed its borders, responding to the ever-increasing coronavirus pandemic. Taking initiative in making all the necessary arrangements for the flight were members of Chabad affiliated EMIH Hungarian-Jewish Association, which is led by Rabbi Shlomo Koves. EMIH also coordinated with the Israeli airline, Arkia as well as the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  The flight was primarily intended for Israelis studying in Budapest, workers at a kosher slaughterhouse who travel from Israel to Hungary on a routine basis to provide kosher meat and the families of Israeli businessmen living an...
