Baltimore, MD - Nov. 5, 2019 - On Sunday, November 3, Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchok/Torah Institute held its first annual Mishnayos Shasathon.  Over 1300 participants, including talmidim, their parents, and grandparents, filled the ballroom at Martin's West to learn and complete Shas Mishnayos in under one hour, creating a big Kiddush Hashem and providing a chizuk for everyone involved. The idea for the Siyum was the brainchild of Dr. Dani Sova, a devoted parent of Cheder talmidim, who dreamed of organizing an event that would create a Kiddush Hashem and benefit the Cheder. After months of hard work by parents and hanhalah members, the dream became a reality. As the talmidim arrived at their assigned seats, each one found the mishnayos they had comm...
JOHANNESBURG (AP) – An earthbound jet known as the Bloodhound became one of the world’s 10 fastest cars this week, on target for its goal to set a new land speed record. “The feeling in this car is fantastic,” driver Andy Green told The Associated Press on Friday, days after the Bloodhound hit 501 mph (806 kph) in South Africa’s northern desert. “It’s quite lively. … The car is just doing brilliant work.” Bloodhound’s next goal is to reach 550 mph (885 kph), possibly in the coming week. Powered by a Rolls-Royce EJ200, the same jet engine used in the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet, the car hurtles so fast across the salt pan track that a twin parachute is needed to bring it to a halt. With the aerodynamic lines of a rocket, Bl...
AMMAN (AP) – Jordan’s king announced Sunday that two pieces of land leased by Israel would be returned to the “full sovereignty” of Jordan as the two countries marked a chilly 25th anniversary of their landmark peace agreement. Israel has controlled the agricultural lands for over 70 years and had been permitted to lease the areas under the 1994 peace agreement, with the assumption that the arrangement would be extended once again. Even amid mistrust and a looming deadline, Israel was hoping a solution could be found. But King Abdullah II’s announcement to parliament seemed to put an end to that and Jordan is set to reclaim full control of the areas this week. “I announce the end of the annex of the two areas, Ghumar and Al-Baqoura, in the peace treaty...
Yisrael Beiteinu head Avigdor Lieberman’s threat on Saturday to support a minority government was a bluff, a Likud official said on Sunday, as such a move would be tantamount to political suicide for the former defense minister. Lieberman told Israel’s Channel 12 news on Saturday that if the Likud and its main rival Blue and White refused to compromise and form a unity government, he would break his vow to only support such a government. “Gantz must accept the president’s plan, including a leave of absence, and Netanyahu has to say goodbye to his ultra-Orthodox messianic bloc,” said Lieberman. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin’s proposed framework for a unity government involves and equal division of power between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanya...
Attorney Alan Dershowitz warned that Americans should be “frightened” of the House’s impeachment investigation, accusing Democrats of trying to “create crimes out of nothing.” “Whether you’re from New York or the middle of the country, you should be frightened by efforts to try to create crimes out of nothing,” Dershowitz said Sunday on John Catsimatidis’ radio show. “Well, I spent the afternoon yesterday searching the federal criminal statutes from beginning to end. I couldn’t find the crime.” “First they made up collusion… I searched the statute books. There’s no crime of collusion… with a foreign country. After that ,they said obstruction of Congress,” Dershowitz said. “In a...
The United Kingdom’s Jewish Chronicle published a front-page editorial message to non-Jews expressing Jewish concerns about Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn possibly becoming prime minister. “Putting oneself in the shoes of another person, or another group, can be difficult. But we believe it is important—and urgent—that you do that,” the paper said, citing a recent poll that found 87 percent of British Jews consider Corbyn to be an anti-Semite. “Throughout his career, he has allied with and supported antisemites such as Paul Eisen, Stephen Sizer and Raed Salah. He has described organisations like Hamas, whose founding charter commits it to the extermination of every Jew on the planet, as his ‘friends.’ He has laid a wreath to honour terro...

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has discovered a new oil field in the country's south with over 50 billion barrels of crude, its president said Sunday, a find that could boost the country's proven reserves by a third as it struggles to sell energy abroad over U.S. sanctions. The announcement by Hassan Rouhani comes as Iran faces crushing American sanctions after the U.S. pulled out of its nuclear deal with world powers last year. Rouhani made the announcement in a speech in the desert city of Yazd. He said the field was located in Iran's southern Khuzestan province, home to its crucial oil industry. Some 53 billion barrels would be added to Iran's proven reserves of roughly 150 billion, he said. "I am telling the White House that in...
JERUSALEM (AP) – The Israeli Cabinet has approved hard-line politician Naftali Bennett as defense minister in the country’s caretaker government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Bennet, with whom he has a rocky relationship, last week. Netanyahu appears to be trying to shore up support among his right-wing base. He’s hoping to block attempts by his chief rival, Benny Gantz, to form Israel’s next government. The Cabinet voted Sunday for Bennett to become defense minister until a permanent government takes hold. Gantz is in the process of trying to cobble together a majority coalition after inconclusive elections in September. Netanyahu had the first try at forming a government, but failed. Bennett, who leads the New Right party, has demanded tougher ...
LAKEWOOD (VosIzNeias) — The Enclave, an upscale age-restricted community in Lakewood, New Jersey, has been ordered to pay some $86,000 in attorney fees incurred by Orthodox Jewish residents who sued the organization for religious discrimination in a 2017 case, a judge ruled. Seven months ago, the plaintiffs and the Fairway Homeowners Association struck a deal to unlock a pedestrian gate locked on Shabbat and other holy days and make other changes integral to Jewish life at the 55-and-over community. U.S. Chief District Judge Freda L. Wolfson has now ruled that the February settlement and consent order entitled the Jewish plaintiffs to “prevailing party” status and attorney fees as opposed to ordinary litigants who pay for their own counsel. In the meantime, the changes...
A Twitter message posted Saturday by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has revived accusations of anti-Semitism against the freshman congresswoman and member of the far-left “Squad.” The remark, posted ahead of Omar’s scheduled appearance at a CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations) event in Washington, also drew a response from tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who accused Omar of “assigning labels.” Omar’s defenders, however, claimed that charges of anti-Semitism against her were overblown, and that Omar’s critics were “obsessed with every word Ilhan says or tweets.” Early Saturday afternoon, Omar reacted to a news report that said businessman Leon Cooperman had decided to back billionaire Michael B...
An Israeli plan to run a cable car over Yerushalayim to the walls of the Old City has angered Palestinians who say it would erase their heritage in areas they seek for a future state. The proposed cable car would shuttle some 3,000 tourists and worshipers per hour from Yerushalayim’s western section to the Old City in a four-minute ride. The plan moved forward this week when a special committee headed by Israel’s finance minister gave it a green light. The government says the roughly 220 million shekel ($63 million) scheme will alleviate heavy traffic to the area, which packs out with tourists and residents visiting its many Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious sites. “This is a strategic project to promote tourism to Yerushalayim’s Old City,” said Isra...

A group of neighborhood youths went on an egging spree on Motzei Shabbos around Dahill Road in Boro Park, hitting multiple Jewish buildings. The targets included a shul, a girls’ school, a bus, and multiple residences. One incident caught on surveillance footage occurred at Khal Bnei Torah Sanz on Dahill Rd, near Cortelyou Rd and 37th St, shortly after Shabbos while mispalelim were still present. Multiple security cameras captured the group passing the shul and pausing to taunt the people inside. When the shul’s door was opened, they hurled an egg as they made their escape. Shomrim was called and arrived shortly thereafter on the scene. Another location that was targeted nearby was the Belzer girls’ school. The attacks fit a pattern of ha...
Israel’s Supreme Court of Justice has approved the extradition of Russian hacker, Alexei Burkov, to the US, rejecting his request to either be extradited or to serve his potential jail time in Russia. Last month the justice ministry finalized the extradition of Alexei Burkov, who has been held in Israeli custody since 2015, without providing a date. Burkov appealed the decision to the supreme court, asking that he be sent to Moscow, or that his extradition to the US be conditioned on him serving any future prison term in Russia. They noted that the decision to extradite him was made “after a deep and exhaustive examination of all the considerations”. Read more at i24NEWS.
Iran is acknowledging for the first time it has an open case before its Revolutionary Court over the 2007 disappearance of former FBI agent Robert Levinson, The Associated Press reported Saturday. In a filing to the United Nations, Iran said the case over Levinson was “ongoing,” without elaborating. It was not immediately clear how long the case had been open, nor the circumstances by which it started. Levinson vanished in Iran in 2007 while on an unauthorized CIA mission and remains missing. In the past, Iran insisted that Levinson is not in the country and that it has no further information about him. Read more at Arutz Sheva.
Israel’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Uri Ariel submitted his resignation on Sunday. In his letter of resignation, Ariel wrote to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “Hope and pray that the next Minister of Agriculture, together with you, will continue to promote farmers and agriculture to the glory of the State of Israel.” Ariel has served in his position since 2015, and as a member of Knesset (Israeli Parliament) since 2001. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog attended a Thursday-night memorial service at the synagogue in Halle, Germany, which one month ago was the target of an anti-Semitic attack on Yom Kippur. Unable to enter the synagogue thanks to recently installed security cameras, doors and locks sponsored by the Jewish Agency’s Security Assistance Fund and the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the attacker killed two non-Jewish passersby in the vicinity as 60 worshippers were on lockdown in the synagogue for five hours. “What happened here was tragic,” said Pompeo. “The world recognized that; [U.S.] President [Donald] Trump recognized that and has put a major focus on stamping out anti-Semitism wherever we find ...

RICHMOND, VA (AP) – Virginia’s House of Delegates is expected to soon have its first female speaker in its 400-year history, as the chamber’s incoming Democrats chose a veteran legislator for the post Saturday. Democratic delegates for the upcoming session picked Del. Eileen Filler-Corn of Fairfax County as their nominee. Filler-Corn’s election as speaker on the session’s first day in January is anticipated because Democrats on Tuesday won a majority in the state House for the first time in two decades. Republicans lost their slim seat advantages in both the state House and Senate , giving Democrats led by Gov. Ralph Northam the ability to pass stricter gun laws and a higher minimum wage, as well as change rules barring the removal of Confederate war memori...
