BALTIMORE, MD — They're the uninvited guests at every picnic. The buzzing nuisance who arrives early and refuses to leave. We're talking of course about mosquitos, the flying bloodsuckers whose bites leave your skin irritated for days. Worst of all, Baltimore was listed among the top cities across the United States impacted by mosquitos. In honor of World Mosquito Day, which occurred on Aug. 20, the pest control company Terminix released its annual list of the Top 50 Mosquito Cities. Terminix determined the rankings by using service data across more than 300 company branches nationwide, and identified the cities where residents needed the highest number of mosquito services last year. Baltimore ranked 9th worst in the country, behind Memphis and ahead of Chicag...
Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,  I lift my lamp beside the golden door! - Emma Lazarus   It should come as no surprise that a Jew wrote the powerful words of exhortation and welcome engraved on the Statue of Liberty.  These words proclaim the noble potential of America with alarming clarity.  Millions have arrived in New York Harbor to be embraced by these words.  How frightening then is it to realize that we have come to a time in our American experiment when the tone and policy of our government makes mockery of the great promise of that mighty statue and the sacred power of Emma Lazarus’ words. President Donald Trump on Tuesday reiterated his call for Russia to be allowed to rejoin the Group of Seven industrial nations, saying it’s “more appropriate to have Russia in.” Trump was speaking with reporters in the Oval Office days before he is set to arrive in France for this weekend’s G-7 summit. “I guess President Obama, because Putin outsmarted him – President Obama thought it wasn’t a good thing to have Russia in, so he wanted Russia out,” Trump said, referring to his predecessor’s push for a united stand against Russia after it annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region. “But I think it’s much more appropriate to have Russia in.” He added that “if somebody would make that motion, I would certainly be disp...

Israel’s Chief Rabbi David Lau on Tuesday ordered to delay the burial of the mother of a Get refuser who has been keeping his ex-wife in a state of Aguna for more than a decade. Five years ago, the man remarried in an unofficial rabbinical court, leaving his first wife without a Get which keeps her from being remarried in a religious ceremony. The Chief Rabbi ordered Israel’s burial society to refrain from burying the mother, whose coffin had arrived overnight from the US to Israel, until the order of the United States Rabbinical Court is upheld. Rabbi Lau said: “We hope this move will bring about a speedy Get and the woman will be released from her moorings after so many years.” Read More @ JewishPress
Los Angeles - Immigrants held in U.S. detention facilities filed a lawsuit Monday decrying what they called shoddy medical care and a failure by authorities to provide accommodations for disabilities. In the suit filed by disability and civil rights advocates in U.S. District Court, immigrants said they’re placed in isolation as punishment and denied recommended medical treatment and surgery. Some said they’ve been denied wheelchairs and a deaf detainee who communicates in American Sign Language said he has not been provided an interpreter. The problems harm disabled immigrants and threaten anyone in one of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s more than 50,000 detention beds who winds up getting sick or isolated from other detainees, said Monica Porter, sta...
London - Britain’s government plans to call a summit of social media companies to discuss what more they can do to fight online misinformation about vaccines following a spike in measles cases. Although plans for such a gathering were still being worked out, Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed concern Monday at the rising incidence of measles. He said Britain had a great record in fighting the disease but things were suddenly “going in the wrong direction,” with 230 new measles cases in the first few months of this year. He said authorities need to address misleading information online about vaccinations. “I’m afraid people have been listening to that superstitious mumbo jumbo on the internet, all that anti-vax stuff and thinking that the MMR...

After the incident police arrested two more suspects, who according to charges, identified the Jewish male by his yarmulke, began kicking the victim’s vehicle, hurling rocks and other objects at it — a few hitting t...
Washington - Airlines expect record crowds over the week-long Labor Day period. The trade group Airlines for America forecast Tuesday that 17.5 million passengers will fly on U.S. carriers between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3. That’s 2.5 million passengers a day and a 4% increase over the same week last year. The busiest day is expected on Friday, Aug. 30, when the group forecasts just under 3 million people will board a U.S. airline. The airline group says carriers have added seats even though Southwest, American and United have canceled thousands of flights while their Boeing 737 Max planes remain grounded. Transportation Department figures show that travel demand has been strong all year, with fares at or near record lows, after adjusting for inflation. The numbers don&rsqu...
Anchorage, AK - Alaska’s wildfire season usually ends well before mid-August but persistent hot, dry weather has contributed to the start of new fires and the spread of old ones. High winds Saturday damaged power lines or knocked trees into lines, sparking multiple fires, including one that temporarily shut down the highway between Anchorage and Denali National Park and burned more than 50 structures, said Tim Mowry, spokesman for the Alaska Division of Forestry. Heavy rain has dampened fires north of the Alaska Range but has not reached areas north and south of Anchorage. “Usually our folks are in the Lower 48 helping out and we’re drowning in rainfall in August in most of Alaska,” he said. Fire crews are working with the state fire marshal to confi...
