Sefer Devarim encapsulates many of the events which transpired earlier in Sefer’s Shemos, Vayikra and Bamidbar.  Parshas Devarim in particular chronicles much of the travels, wars and mistakes made by Klal Yisroel in the Midbar.  Moshe Rabbeinu singles out the M’raglim for particular criticism in this weeks Parsha.   He similarly brought up the M’raglim with Shevet Reuven and Gad at the end of Parshas Mattos.  At that time, the leaders of Shevet Reuven and Gad had approached Moshe Rabbeinu to request that their Chelek be granted on the “other” side of the Yarden.  Moshe Rabbeinu responded with a blistering criticism of the request, (Mattos 31:1-15) comparing them to the M’raglim who also did not want to go into Eretz Yisroel. &nb...
Jerusalem - Hundreds of people attended Thursday’s funeral of an 18-year-old Israeli soldier who was found dead hours earlier with stab wounds near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the killing as a terror attack and vowed the killers would be brought to justice. Israeli troops raided a nearby Palestinian village and the military said it was sending reinforcements to the West Bank. The killing threatened to inflame tensions between Israelis and Palestinians just over a month before Israel’s parliament elections. In response to the incident, Netanyahu’s nationalist allies called for further West Bank settlement construction and a heavy handed response. The soldier was identified as 18-year-old Dvir Sorek, from the West Ban...

We are all familiar with the sad reality that we are yet in exile because we are still guilty of ‘baseless hatred’. Where does an attitude of baseless hatred stem from? The Maharsha points to the verse where Moshe admonish the nation for their having accused G-d, as it were, for hating them. You slandered in your tents and said, “Because of G-d’s hatred for us did He take us out of the land of Egypt...(דברים א כז) It was this sinful and baseless allegation of hatred from G-d that engendered their future challenge with the struggles of baseless hatred that would plague their relationships, that would somehow rectify this original sin. What connection is there between their frustration with G-d and the difficulties they would face among&nbs...

On Monday evening, August 5, Chayeinu, Delegate Dalya Attar and Congregation Ner Tamid jointly sponsored a program about addiction that featured a Narcan training session.  Ms. Attar opened the program, attended by over 200 people, by declaring, “Never again should we need to attend a funeral of a young person who has died of an overdose” and shared her personal loss of a friend to addiction.  She declared that we as a community must address this issue in order to save potential victims from this deadly disease.  She explained that Narcan (the commercial name for Naloxone) is a drug that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.  A local day school administrator saved the life of a student with Narcan this past spring.  It can be easily adm...

"It is a great loss for the family; of course, we embrace them and send them all our love, and to Yeshivat Machanaim and Ohr Torah Stone. It's a great loss to Israeli society, a person who truly loved ...

A Palestinian man who faced death threats after saving the lives of Israeli children following a terrorist attack that killed their rabbi father was awarded Israeli residency by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri on Tuesday. The unnamed 28-year old man and his wife, who has a nursing degree, were traveling in the vicinity of their home near Hebron on July 1, 2016, when they encountered the overturned vehicle of Rabbi Miki Mark and his wife, Chava, which had gone off the road near Otniel after being sprayed with bullets in a terrorist attack. Rabbi Mark was killed and Chava Mark seriously wounded in the attack. Despite tensions between Palestinians and Israelis in the region, the couple immediately stopped and helped evacuate the Marks’ trapped, injured and frightened teenage children fr...
Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, whose congressional district includes Dayton, where nine people were killed in a mass shooting over the weekend, endorsed a ban on military-style weapons Tuesday, going further than many of his GOP colleagues on stricter gun laws. The mass shooting, which came some 13 hours after a deadly mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, was personal for Turner, not only because it occurred in his district but because his daughter and a family friend were at a bar across the street from where the shooting began. “As they ran home, I followed their progress & prayed for them & our community. Thank you to @DaytonPolice for their bravery in stopping this evil,” Turner tweeted Sunday morning. Two days later, Turner, who has...

Katz is accused of using his office to advance the financial interests of businessman Mordechai Ben Ari in what authorities say was an illicit quid pro quo scheme.
Kabul - The United States and the Taliban have resolved differences in peace talks over the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and guarantees from the insurgents that they will cut ties with other extremist groups, a Taliban official said Tuesday. The U.S. side did not immediately provide details about the latest round of talks held in Qatar, where the Taliban maintain a political office. But Zalmay Khalilzad, the American envoy who has been leading the talks since they began late last year, tweeted that they had made “excellent progress.” The two sides have been meeting for the last two days, and technical teams were continuing discussions on Tuesday in Doha. The Taliban official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss...
After buying roughly half of Rite Aid's stores two years ago, Walgreens expanded its American footprint to more than 9,500 stores. The planned closures represent less than 3% of Walgreens locations. The closures will cause "minimal disruption to customers and patients," Walgreens said in a statement. The company will also find jobs for affected employees in nearby locations. Walgreens did not provide a list of the stores that it plans to close. Parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance announced in June it would close 200 of its more than 2,400 Boots stores in the United Kingdom. The company expects the combined closures to save it $1.5 billion annually by the end of fiscal year 2022. Earlier this year, Walgreens issued a weak profit outlook for 2019, so it pledged to cut costs to boo...
