Shas chairman Aryeh Deri today opened the party’s campaign for the 22nd Knesset under the banner “Social Power in Government”.
“Shas is the mezuzah of the Likud,” Deri declared, utilizing the Torah commandment to suggest that Shas would protect the Likud. “We don’t zig-zag, we’re not looking for gimmicks or connections. We’re stable and we’ve existed for close to 40 years.
“It’s not for nothing the journalists complain that we’re very boring. We’ve said all along that we’ll support Prime Minister Netanyahu and so we will continue. In the upcoming elections we’ll only recommend Netanyahu to the President,” Deri promised.

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military-terrorist wing of Hamas, announced its intention to broadcast an “important speech” on Tuesday evening, which will deal with Israeli citizens held captive in the Gaza Strip.
The video’s spokesman will be Abu Obeida, the official spokesman of the Al-Qassam Brigades, and the timing of the broadcast was chosen for its close proximity to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech at the memorial ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of the 2014 Gaza war.
Hamas has been holding the bodies of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul since the 2014 Operation Protective Edge.

Washington - The immigration enforcement operation touted by President Donald Trump that targeted some 2,000 people resulted in 35 arrests, officials said Tuesday.
Trump billed the operation as a major show of force in an effort to “deport millions” of people in the country illegally as the number of Central American families crossing the southern border has skyrocketed.
Of those arrested, 18 were members of families and 17 were collateral apprehensions of people in the country illegally encountered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. None of those arrested resulted in a separation of family, officials said.

Lithuania - Researchers carrying out an excavation of the famed Great Synagogue on Vilna which was destroyed during the Holocaust have uncovered 200-year-old inscriptions in Hebrew, the first time they have exposed such a finding.
Dr. Jon Seligman of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and Justinas Račas of the Kultūros paveldo Išsaugojimo pajėgos of Lithuania, who have conducted excavations in Lithuania every summer for the last four years, said that “the large and significant inscription, dated to 1796, was part of a stone Torah reading table that stood on the magnificent Bimah of the synagogue in Vilnius.”

Kabul - Afghanistan called on Tuesday for an explanation of comments by U.S. President Donald Trump in which he said he could win the Afghan war in just 10 days by wiping out Afghanistan but did not want to kill 10 million people.
Trump’s remarks followed a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday during which Trump voiced optimism that Pakistan could help broker a political settlement to end the nearly 18-year-old war in Afghanistan.

Jerusalem - Three Palestinians were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the assault of the Saudi journalist Mahmoud Saud on Temple Mount on Monday.
The blogger, who is part of an unprecedented six-person media delegation from the Arab world, was cursed, spat at, jeered and told to “go to a synagogue” on Monday as he went to the Temple Mount.

A Louisiana policeman who suggested on Facebook that high-profile U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez needed to be shot was fired on Monday, along with a second officer who “liked” his post.
Officers Charles Rispoli, a 14-year veteran of the Gretna Police Department who made the social media comment on Thursday, and Angelo Varisco, who “liked” it, were terminated following a swift internal investigation, Chief Arthur Lawson told a news conference.
“This incident we feel has been an embarrassment to our department. These officers acted in a manner which was unprofessional, alluding to a violent act to be conducted a sitting U.S. congresswoman,” Lawson said.

ADELAIDE, Australia — Here’s something to consider the next time you’re thinking about ordering a spicy dish: a new long-term international study has found that a spicy diet could lead to dementia.
According to the study, older adults over the age of 55 who consumed more than 50 grams of chili per day displayed nearly double the risk of developing poor cognition and a decline in overall memory. Interestingly, slimmer adults indulging in a spicy diet exhibited even more significant memory loss.
“Chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure in our previous studies. However, in this study, we found adverse effects on cognition among older adults,” lead researcher Dr. Zumin Shi explains in a statement.

Israel has condemned the European Parliament for recently inviting a Palestinian terrorist to speak at the venue, and is urging the European Union to take steps to prevent members of designated terror groups from doing so in the future.

(Gray News/CNN) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added Ohio and Alaska to the list of states with confirmed measles cases, bringing the total number of states to 30.
The most recent reported numbers show 1,148 individual cases since the start of 2019, which is 25 more than the previous week.
Other states with reported cases include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington.
This is also the largest amount of reported cases in the U.S. since 1998 and since measles was declared eliminated in 2000.

Seoul - South Korean warplanes fired hundreds of warning shots at a Russian military aircraft that entered South Korean airspace on Tuesday, defense officials said, while Russia denied violating any airspace and accused South Korean pilots of being reckless.

Dublin-headquartered medical device maker Medtronic has signed a partnership agreement with stroke detection startup Viz.ai, the latter announced Monday. As part of the agreement, Medtronic will distribute Viz.ai’s technology in the US. The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
