Shas chairman Aryeh Deri today opened the party’s campaign for the 22nd Knesset under the banner “Social Power in Government”. “Shas is the mezuzah of the Likud,” Deri declared, utilizing the Torah commandment to suggest that Shas would protect the Likud. “We don’t zig-zag, we’re not looking for gimmicks or connections. We’re stable and we’ve existed for close to 40 years. “It’s not for nothing the journalists complain that we’re very boring. We’ve said all along that we’ll support Prime Minister Netanyahu and so we will continue. In the upcoming elections we’ll only recommend Netanyahu to the President,” Deri promised. The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military-terrorist wing of Hamas, announced its intention to broadcast an “important speech” on Tuesday evening, which will deal with Israeli citizens held captive in the Gaza Strip. The video’s spokesman will be Abu Obeida, the official spokesman of the Al-Qassam Brigades, and the timing of the broadcast was chosen for its close proximity to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech at the memorial ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of the 2014 Gaza war. Hamas has been holding the bodies of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul since the 2014 Operation Protective Edge. Read more at Arutz Sheva.
Washington - The immigration enforcement operation touted by President Donald Trump that targeted some 2,000 people resulted in 35 arrests, officials said Tuesday. Trump billed the operation as a major show of force in an effort to “deport millions” of people in the country illegally as the number of Central American families crossing the southern border has skyrocketed. Of those arrested, 18 were members of families and 17 were collateral apprehensions of people in the country illegally encountered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. None of those arrested resulted in a separation of family, officials said. While the operation was demonized by Democrats as a full-force effort to deport families and trumpeted by Republicans as a necessary effort to show there a...
Lithuania - Researchers carrying out an excavation of the famed Great Synagogue on Vilna which was destroyed during the Holocaust have uncovered 200-year-old inscriptions in Hebrew, the first time they have exposed such a finding. Dr. Jon Seligman of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and Justinas Račas of the Kultūros paveldo Išsaugojimo pajėgos of Lithuania, who have conducted excavations in Lithuania every summer for the last four years, said that “the large and significant inscription, dated to 1796, was part of a stone Torah reading table that stood on the magnificent Bimah of the synagogue in Vilnius.” The text says that the centerpiece table was donated by two brothers, Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shmuel, in memory of their mother, Sarah, and their father, Ra...
Yellowjackets play a supportive role in gardening but can be dangerous around families and pets. People sensitive to bee venom should be especially careful from August through October, when yellowjacket numbers peak. They attack when threatened, and are known to crash cookouts too. “Yellowjackets, hornets and paper wasps are all beneficial predators of soft-bodied insects such as caterpillars, grubs and flies,” said Heather Stoven, a horticulturist with Oregon State University Extension Service. “However, yellowjackets will often begin to scavenge late in the summer into fall as their typical food sources often become more limited. “They begin to look for carrion (think your hamburger at a picnic) as well as sugary foods ... which can lead to increased negative e...

Kabul - Afghanistan called on Tuesday for an explanation of comments by U.S. President Donald Trump in which he said he could win the Afghan war in just 10 days by wiping out Afghanistan but did not want to kill 10 million people. Trump’s remarks followed a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday during which Trump voiced optimism that Pakistan could help broker a political settlement to end the nearly 18-year-old war in Afghanistan. The comment about wiping out Afghanistan prompted a stiff response from its presidential palace, which has been excluded from talks between the United States and the Taliban and which accuses Pakistan of supporting the insurgency. “The Afghan nation has not and will never allow any foreign power to determine ...
Jerusalem - Three Palestinians were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the assault of the Saudi journalist Mahmoud Saud on Temple Mount on Monday. The blogger, who is part of an unprecedented six-person media delegation from the Arab world, was cursed, spat at, jeered and told to “go to a synagogue” on Monday as he went to the Temple Mount. One video clip showed Saud walking on the Temple Mount as people shouted epithets at him such as “traitor,” “animal” and “normalizer,” and small boys approached and spat in his face. Another video clip showed plastic chairs and sticks being thrown at him as he walked in the market in the Old City. Saud is the only member of the six-person delegation who was willing to go public, having...
President Donald Trump attacked Robert Mueller on Monday, even as he insisted he would not watch the special counsel’s potentially damaging Congressional testimony this week about the two-year Russia investigation. Two days before Mueller testifies — answering questions for the first time about his high-stakes probe into Russian election meddling and Trump’s alleged obstruction — the president repeated his longstanding claim it was a biased “witch hunt.” “Highly conflicted Robert Mueller should not be given another bite at the apple. In the end, it will be bad for him and the phony Democrats in Congress who have done nothing but waste time on this ridiculous Witch Hunt,” Trump tweeted. “Result of the Mueller Report, NO COLLUSION, NO ...
A Louisiana policeman who suggested on Facebook that high-profile U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez needed to be shot was fired on Monday, along with a second officer who “liked” his post. Officers Charles Rispoli, a 14-year veteran of the Gretna Police Department who made the social media comment on Thursday, and Angelo Varisco, who “liked” it, were terminated following a swift internal investigation, Chief Arthur Lawson told a news conference. “This incident we feel has been an embarrassment to our department. These officers acted in a manner which was unprofessional, alluding to a violent act to be conducted a sitting U.S. congresswoman,” Lawson said. Read more at YAHOO NEWS.
Evangelical leader Laurie Cardoza-Moore has called upon the Israeli government to consider only letting controversial Congresswomen Ilhan Omar (D) and Rashid Tlaib (D) to enter Israel "through the terror tunnels from Egypt to witness the impact of their fundraising efforts for Hamas."
ADELAIDE, Australia — Here’s something to consider the next time you’re thinking about ordering a spicy dish: a new long-term international study has found that a spicy diet could lead to dementia. According to the study, older adults over the age of 55 who consumed more than 50 grams of chili per day displayed nearly double the risk of developing poor cognition and a decline in overall memory. Interestingly, slimmer adults indulging in a spicy diet exhibited even more significant memory loss. “Chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure in our previous studies. However, in this study, we found adverse effects on cognition among older adults,” lead researcher Dr. Zumin Shi explains in a statement. ...
Israel has condemned the European Parliament for recently inviting a Palestinian terrorist to speak at the venue, and is urging the European Union to take steps to prevent members of designated terror groups from doing so in the future. In a letter to European Parliament president David Sassoli, Israel’s minister of strategic affairs Gilan Erdan expressed his “dismay” that Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) member Khaled Barakat, who also serves in the BDS-promoting NGO “Samidoun” was invited to speak to the parliament by Spanish MEP Manu Pineda. “Barakat, a PFLP Central Committee member was recently prohibited by German authorities from speaking at a political event due to his ties to terror … and the European Parliament must ...

LONDON (AP) — Here are five things you may not know about Boris Johnson, who is set to become Britain’s next prime minister : HE HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN SUCH A CONFIDENT CHARACTER: While Johnson is known for his booming voice, boisterous behavior and creative use of language (including Latin and Greek), he was much more subdued as a child. In fact, until the age of eight, Johnson was severely deaf because of glue ear, a condition where the ear canal fills with fluid that can cause temporary hearing loss. Although he now jokes that he exaggerated his condition as a youngster to avoid boring conversations, he did have to wear a grommet, a small tube surgically implanted in the eardrum to drain liquid. HE’S NOT LIKELY TO TEACH JOURNALISTIC ETHICS WHEN HE LEAVES ...
Seoul - South Korean warplanes fired hundreds of warning shots at a Russian military aircraft that entered South Korean airspace on Tuesday, defense officials said, while Russia denied violating any airspace and accused South Korean pilots of being reckless. It was the first time a Russian military aircraft had violated South Korean airspace, an official at the South Korean Ministry of National Defence said in Seoul. The incident, which also involved China and Japan, could complicate relations and raise tension in a region that has for years been over-shadowed by hostility between the United States and North Korea. Two Russian Tu-95 bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers entered the Korea Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ) together early on Tuesday, the South Korean defense ministry s...
Varunavi Sreejith, 13, gaped at the screen in front of her, inching to the edge of her seat as the clock ticked down to 2:43 p.m. When Chandrayaan-2, India’s second lunar mission, took off, she jumped up, clapping, a bright smile lighting up her face. “I am very proud and relieved,” Varunavi said. A student at JBM Global, one of India’s only high schools offering a curriculum dedicated to space exploration, she had stayed after school to watch the live-streamed launch in the auditorium. She wasn’t alone. Hundreds of thousands of Indians across the country went online to watch the nation’s most ambitious space mission to date. On Facebook, the live launch had more than 650,000 viewers. Over 7,500 people registered to travel to Satish Dhawan Space Center...
Dublin-headquartered medical device maker Medtronic has signed a partnership agreement with stroke detection startup Viz.ai, the latter announced Monday. As part of the agreement, Medtronic will distribute Viz.ai’s technology in the US. The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. Viz.ai develops deep learning and artificial intelligence-powered technology that can analyze brain scans and automatically transfer the information to a doctor to ensure the most immediate treatment for strokes. Viz.ai’s system connects to a hospital CT scanner and alerts the stroke specialist if a suspected large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke has been identified, sending the radiological images directly to their smartphone. Based in San Francisco and Tel Aviv, Viz.ai was founded in 2...
