The U.S. has seen low levels of unemployment, which is seen as a major factor in low levels of participation in the program. President Trump tweeted earlier this month that food stamp use is at a 10-year low. Politifact verified the claim. Reuters, citing a U.S. Department of Agriculture, reported that residents in 43 states who receive help from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, automatically enroll in the food-stamp program, known as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP. The USDA intends to review these TANF cases to see if participants qualify for the program. “This proposal will save money and preserve the integrity of the program,” Sonny Perdue, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, said in a conference call. “SNAP should...
People who live in the building reportedly said they felt lightning strike. PIKESVILLE, MD — A gas leak resulted in the evacuation of a residential building in Quarry Lake Monday night, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. The gas leak was located in an attic space, officials reported. By 8:40 p.m., officials said residents were returning to their homes, a little less than two hours after emergency personnel had been called to investigate. Authorities said that the building in the 3000 block of Stone Cliff Drive was evacuated after an odor of gas was reported at 6:51 p.m. on Monday, July 22. Witnesses told WMAR-2 that they thought a lightning strike caused the break. Gas was shut off to the building while firefighters and BGE ensured all was safe. Nobody...
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s governing Conservative Party is set to reveal Tuesday the identity of the country’s next prime minister, with Brexit hardliner Boris Johnson the strong favorite to get the job. Full Coverage: Brexit Party officials will announce whether Johnson or rival Jeremy Hunt has won a ballot of about 160,000 Conservative members. The winner replaces Theresa May, who announced her resignation last month, and will officially become prime minister on Wednesday. It will be a huge upset if the winner is not Johnson, a former London mayor who has wooed Conservatives by promising to succeed where May failed and lead the U.K. out of the European Union on the scheduled date of Oct. 31 — with or without a divorce deal. Several Conservative ministers ha...
Nineteen people have died from methanol poisoning in Costa Rica since June, the country’s Ministry of Heath said as it warns of alcohol tainted with dangerous levels of the chemical. Authorities have confiscated about 30,000 containers of six different brands of alcohol in an effort to keep people from drinking contaminated products, the Ministry of Health said Friday. A notice the day before warned the public about products packaged under names like “Guaro Gran Apache,” “Red Star Brandy,” “Guaro Montano” and more. The ministry issued a July 4 alert about the methanol issue only for drinks identified as “Guaro Montano,” but expanded its warnings after collecting samples of alcohol under several other names. The deaths have been growi...
The Trump’s reelection campaign store has sold more than 140,000 plastic straws in just a few days, President Trump’s 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted Monday. Parscale first promoted the plastic straws on Thursday in response to what the campaign website calls an alternative to “liberal plastic straws.” “Liberal paper straws don’t work. STAND WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP and buy your pack of recyclable straws today,” reads the straws’ product description on the president’s campaign website. Parscaled said sales of the red Trump-branded straws have eclipsed $200,000. Read more at The Hill.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., called for a federal minimum wage of $20 per hour at an event in Detroit on Sunday night, prompting mockery from conservatives and threatening to force mainline Democrats in the 2020 presidential race to address the issue in upcoming debates. Tlaib's comment came during remarks to the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Michigan and the labor rights group One Fair Wage, and were recorded by the conservative political action committee America Rising. The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a $15 federal minimum wage bill last week, but it has little chance of passing the GOP-controlled Senate. Tlaib, referring to the federal minimum wage for those workers, said that "tipped employees make $2.13 per hour, f...

New York - Millions of people who take aspirin to prevent a heart attack may need to rethink the pill-popping, Harvard researchers reported Monday. A daily low-dose aspirin is recommended for people who have already had a heart attack or stroke and for those diagnosed with heart disease. But for the otherwise healthy, that advice has been overturned. Guidelines released this year ruled out routine aspirin use for many older adults who don’t already have heart disease — and said it’s only for certain younger people under doctor’s orders. How many people need to get that message? Some 29 million people 40 and older were taking an aspirin a day despite having no known heart disease in 2017, the latest data available, according to a new study from Harvard and Beth I...
Washington - President Donald Trump says a deal has been struck with congressional leaders on the budget and debt ceiling, mostly eliminating the threat of a repeat government shutdown this fall. Trump tweets that the agreement is “a real compromise” and a victory for the nation’s military and veterans. Aides say the deal would allow the government to continue to pay its bills and build upon recent budget gains for the Pentagon and domestic agencies. Lawmakers were working to avert a first-ever default on U.S. payments and to set overall spending limits and prevent automatic spending cuts. Trump says the deal contains no “poison pills.” But it comes as budget deficits are rising to $1 trillion levels.

New York - President Donald Trump insisted Monday that he wouldn’t be watching former special counsel Robert Mueller’s upcoming congressional testimony, then conceded he might watch “a little bit.” Mueller, whose appearance on Capitol Hill has been anticipated for months, is expected to testify for at least five hours on Wednesday. Trump told reporters at the White House he is “not going to be watching Mueller” and said Democrats running the hearing were “wasting their time.” But he later added that “maybe I’ll see a little bit of it.” Hours earlier, Trump tweeted that Mueller “should not be given another bite at the apple” months after wrapping his investigation. Mueller’s report did not find sufficie...

Jerusalem - StemRad, an Israeli tech company that produces personal radiation protection equipment for a variety of applications, is joining NASA in its venture into deep space, and primarily to Mars. After reaching the Moon in April with SpaceIL’s Beresheet spacecraft, the Israeli space tech scene is booming. While SpaceIL recently announced it would aim again for the Moon in its next mission, one Israeli company is already taking part in a Space venture and has joined NASA in its future missions to Mars. One of the biggest obstacles for astronauts on long deep-space missions is the immense solar radiation. The exposure to solar particles outside the protective atmosphere can be very harmful to the astronauts who may suffer exposure to high doses of radiation. The leading cause of...
NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft is paying more than $25 million to settle federal corruption charges involving a bribery scheme in Hungary and other foreign offices. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said Microsoft will pay about $16.6 million to settle charges that it violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. While the case centered on Hungary, the SEC said it also found improprieties at Microsoft offices in Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Turkey. The Justice Department said Microsoft will also pay an $8.75 million criminal fine stemming from the Hungarian bid-rigging and bribery scheme. Federal prosecutors said that from 2013 through 2015, a senior executive and other employees at the Hungary office took part in a scheme to “inflate margins in the Microsoft sale...
New York - An MSNBC contributor apologized and deleted a tweet that appeared to confuse readers about Fox News Channel’s plans to cover special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s testimony before Congress this week. Joyce Vance, a former federal prosecutor, said Sunday on Twitter that Fox isn’t airing Mueller’s testimony because President Donald Trump is afraid of what will happen to his supporters if they heard Mueller. But Fox is airing the testimony Wednesday, along with ABC, CBS , NBC and the cable news networks. Vance tweeted later Sunday that while she meant it ironically, “my apologies to anyone I confused.” MSNBC had no comment Monday. Fox noted it had been running promos of its Mueller coverage since Friday. Vance’s original message had been...
Providence, RI - A Titanic survivor’s walking stick, with an electric light she used to signal for help from a lifeboat, sold for $62,500 at an auction of maritime items, the auction house said Monday. Guernsey’s held the auction at the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island, on Friday and Saturday. The top bid on Ella White’s cane was $50,000, plus the surcharge added by the auction house, Guernsey’s President Arlan Ettinger said. Ettinger had expected it to sell for far more, with a pre-auction estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. He described it as one of the most extraordinary items to have survived the sinking. The walking stick was consigned to Guernsey’s by the Williams family in Milford, Connecticut. Some family members contes...
New York - A man charged with killing a reputed New York mob boss was deluded by internet conspiracy theories and thought he was helping President Donald Trump defend Democracy, his attorney said in court papers filed Friday. Anthony Comello is facing murder charges in the March 13 shooting of Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali, an alleged leader in the Gambino crime family. In a legal filing, attorney Robert Gottleib said Comello was gripped by an irrational belief that Cali was part of a “deep state” that secretly controls the U.S., and went to the gangster’s home on Staten Island with handcuffs with the intention of arresting him. “Mr. Comello became certain that he was enjoying the protection of President Trump himself, and that he had the president&rsqu...
