President Donald Trump warned the United States may launch a devastating military attack on Iran unless it comes to the negotiating table and drops its bid to develop nuclear weapons. “I'm not looking for war and if there is, it'll be obliteration like you've never seen before. But I'm not looking to do that. But you can't have a nuclear weapon. You want to talk? Good. Otherwise you can have a bad economy for the next three years,” Trump said during an interview with NBC’s “Meet The Press“ airing Sunday. The president said he’d be willing to sit down with Iranian officials without any pre-conditions. The comments, made during an interview taped Friday, came the same day Trump confirmed on Twitter that he called off a retaliato...
“Can one truly assess how much is gained from completing Daf Yomi?” HaRav Pam zt”l Leaves Us with Timeless Lesson When the Daf Yomi cycle of three cycles ago concluded - in Elul 5757 (1997)- the scope of next year’s The Siyum worldwide celebrations was unthinkable. Still, the markings of Daf Yomi’s exponential growth could already be clearly seen. In a scale unprecedented at the time, both Madison Square Garden and Nassau Coliseum in New York, plus satellite locations worldwide, were filled with celebrants of The Agudah’s 10th Siyum Hashas of Daf Yomi. The legendary Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Vodaath, HaRav Avrohom Hacohein Pam zt”l, was honored with the has’chala (commencement) of the new Daf Yomi cycle. “Can one truly assess how much...
Beirut - Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has criticized the Trump administration’s $50 billion investment proposal, part of its Middle East peace plan, saying Beirut will not be “tempted” by money at the expense of Palestinians’ rights. State-run National News Agency quoted Berri as saying Sunday that those who believe Beirut will be lured by billions of dollars at a time when Lebanon is passing through an economic crisis are “mistaken.” The 10-year plan calls for projects worth $6.3 billion for Palestinians in Lebanon, as well as $27.5 billion in the West Bank and Gaza, $9.1 billion in Egypt and $7.4 billion in Jordan. The large sums for Jordan and Lebanon, countries with substantial Palestinian refugee populations, are an apparent att...
Gaza City - Palestinian officials on Saturday dismissed proposals unveiled by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner for big money projects to form the first economic portion of the Trump administration’s long-awaited Middle East peace plan. Senior Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Hanan Ashrawi said Kushner’s plans were “all abstract promises” and said only a political solution would solve the conflict. Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls Gaza, was more blunt, saying: “Palestine isn’t for sale”. An Israeli cabinet minister welcomed the plan. The Trump administration’s $50 billion Middle East economic plan calls for creation of a global investment fund to lift the Palestinian and neighboring Ar...
Tehran warned Washington on Saturday that any attacks against Iran would set the Middle East on fire. Iran’s warning came after President Donald Trump revealed on Friday that he canceled an order for strikes against three Iranian sites just ten minutes before they were to be executed after being told the raid would kill 150 people. The strikes were meant to serve as a response to Iran’s downing of an American drone in the Strait of Hormuz. “Firing one bullet towards Iran will set fire to the interests of America and its allies” in the region, armed forces general staff spokesman Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi told the Tasnim news agency. “If the enemy — especially America and its allies in the region — make the military mistake of shooting...
US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy lashed out at the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Friday over its refusal to take part in next week’s American-organized conference in Manama on investment in the Palestinian economy. “The PA is calling for demonstrations against the Bahrain workshop,” Jason Greenblatt tweeted. “Tells you everything you need to know about their priorities & intentions. Their leadership is happy w/ the status quo & would rather Palestinians suffer than at least explore a different path for a better future.” The “Peace to Prosperity” summit is set to take place next Tuesday and Wednesday, June 25-26. The event is supposed to mark the kick-off of the Trump administration’s long-awaited Israeli-Palestini...
he British government declared a top-performing Jewish school to be “inadequate” because it teaches girls and boys separately. King David High School in the Manchester area was downgraded this year by Ofsted, the British government’s regulator authority for education, the Manchester Evening News reported last week. It had been rated by Ofsted as “outstanding” in keeping with its being one of the top-rated and best-performing high schools in the country but was found to be practicing “unlawful segregation” of pupils “on the grounds of faith and belief and sex.” The school of 800 pupils may be shut down if it continues to be found inadequate in subsequent inspections. Israeli officials have been concerned about the Trump administration’s response to Iran amid the latest tension between Washington and Tehran, reported Israel’s Channel 13 and Axios on Thursday. The officials told the outlets that U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to avoid military conflict, and that if the administration does not launch even a limited military response, Iran will continue with the attacks. This development preceded Trump calling off retaliatory strikes against Iran for shooting down an American spy drone near the Strait of Hormuz, which Trump confirmed on Friday, saying that such a response was “not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.” “We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights when I asked, ho...

According to the report, the administrations of yeshivas for boys ages 14-17 – also known as “yeshiva ketana” or “mesivta” – told directors and head counselors of Chabad summer camps around the world not to hire their students. “It is absolutely forbidden for managers of camps, day camps and the like to employ students studying in Yeshivos Ketanos (going up to shiurim Aleph, Beis or Gimmel),” a joint statement from the yeshivas read. Tehran - Iran’s state TV says authorities have executed a former staff member of the Defense Ministry who was convicted of spying for the CIA. The Saturday report says Jalal Hajizavar was hanged last week in a prison near Tehran. The report said Hajzavar admitted in court that he was paid to spy for the CIA. The report said authorities also confiscated espionage equipment from his residence. It said the court sentenced Haizavar’s wife to 15 years in prison for her role in the espionage. Occasionally, Iran announces the detention of spies from foreign countries, including the U.S. and Israel. In 2016, Iran executed a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for the U.S.
Washington - U.S. military cyber forces launched a strike against Iranian military computer systems on Thursday as President Donald Trump backed away from plans for a more conventional military strike in response to Iran’s downing of a U.S. surveillance drone, U.S. officials said Saturday. Two officials told The Associated Press that the strikes were conducted with approval from Trump. A third official confirmed the broad outlines of the strike. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the operation. The cyberattacks — a contingency plan developed over weeks amid escalating tensions — disabled Iranian computer systems that controlled its rocket and missile launchers, the officials said. Two of the officials said the at...

Baltimore, MD - June 20, 2019 - Hard to believe, but, 27 Baltimore children in our community are afflicted with traumatic illnesses.  They escape those illnesses, looks of judgement, and self-consciousness for 2 weeks each summer in Camp Simcha, a medical camp that is the flagship program of Chai Lifeline. The cost for them to be taken care of and in camp is $10,000 per child.  Medicine, medical staff, one-on-one support... it all ads up. That means the total cost for our local kids is $270,000. Team Baltimore, riding in memory Ed Schaffer, z'l, (pictured below), has an ambitious goal of raising $100,000 to help cover the costs of the 27 Baltimore children who attend Camp Simcha.  This money will help us cover just over a third of the expense to give our community...
Baltimore, MD - June 22, 2019 — Transit fares will increase Sunday for Maryland Transit Administration buses, light rail, subway and MobilityLink. Fares are increasing by 10 cents starting Sunday. The single-trip fare will increase from $1.80 to $1.90 for local bus, light rail and subway. MobilityLink single-trip fares will increase from $2 to $2.10. MTA officials encourage riders to purchase monthly fare passes, which will increase from $72 per month to $74. Fare increases for Commuter Bus and MARC Train fares occur every five years and are scheduled for review in 2020. Transportation officials said the increase comes because of the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013, which mandates fare increases be based on the consumer price index every two years.
Washington -  President Donald Trump said Saturday that military action against Iran was still an option for its downing of an unmanned U.S. military aircraft, but amid heightened tensions he dangled the prospect of eventually becoming an unlikely “best friend” of America’s longtime Middle Eastern adversary. Trump also said “we very much appreciate” that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard chose not to target a U.S. spy plane carrying more than 30 people. The president’s softer tone Saturday marked a stark contrast to the anti-Iran rhetoric he employed throughout the presidential campaign and presidency, including his use of punishing economic sanctions in an attempt to pressure Iran to give up its quest to build nuclear weapons. “The fact is ...
A fast-moving line of severe storms known as a derecho stretched from the Midwest to the South Carolina coastline, leaving three people dead and more than 350 damage reports in its wake. The extreme weather phenomena started in central Nebraska in the predawn hours on Friday and traveled all the way to Charleston by Saturday morning. Shelf clouds were seen along the line of storms. Major US cities, such as Kansas City and St. Louis, got a taste of strong winds and heavy rain from these apocalyptic-looking clouds. The term "derecho" is Spanish for the word straight. It was first defined by physicist Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs in his paper in the American Meteorological Journal in 1888. The National Weather Service defines derechos as "widespread, long-lived wind storms as...
Montevideo, Uruguay - A court in Uruguay ruled Friday that the government must sell a huge Nazi bronze eagle that was recovered off the South American country’s coast in 2006. The eagle with a swastika under its talons was part of the stern of the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee that sank off Uruguay’s coast at the outset of World War II. The Third Reich symbol has ignited so much controversy since it was recovered that it has been kept hidden inside a sealed crate in a Uruguayan navy warehouse for more than a decade. The court ruled that it must be sold within 90 days and the proceeds must be split equally among the investors who organized the effort to recover the eagle from the bottom of the River Plate. “Everything was done following the law and under a contrac...
