WASHINGTON (AP) — Some of the younger candidates in the crowded Democratic presidential primary are suggesting that the early front-runner, 76-year-old Joe Biden , is too mired in the past. Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke , 46, and Pete Buttigieg , the 37-year old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, have stepped up questions this week about whether Biden really provides new perspectives for the direction of the country after the 2020 election. “We cannot return to the past,” O’Rourke told MSNBC on Thursday. “That cannot be who we are going forward. We’ve got to be bigger, we’ve got to be bolder.” O’Rourke has spent months praising Biden’s experience and perspective. His criticism now comes two week...

Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty Thursday to a single corruption count and agreed to testify against her husband at his trial on charges the couple spent more than $200,000 in campaign funds on trips, dinners, clothes and other personal expenses. Margaret Hunter served as campaign chair for her husband, and after the couple was indicted last year the Republican congressman from California suggested his wife was to blame for any misuse of funds. They both pleaded not guilty but she reversed course and withdrew her plea Thursday during a brief federal court hearing. United Nations - The head of the Arab League is warning against any peace plan that ignores a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also warns against any proposal that creates an alternative economic track that perpetuates Israel’s occupation of territory the Palestinians want for their independent state. Aboul Gheit never mentioned the United States in his briefing to the U.N. Security Council on Thursday but his message appeared aimed at the long-awaited U.S. plan to end the decades-old conflict. Its economic provisions are scheduled to be rolled out at a workshop in Bahrain June 25-26. Aboul Gheit was highly critical of “the attempt to resolve the Palestinian question outside the framework of international law and to ...
In an odd structuring of the weekly reading, tradition has it that we record at the end of last week’s reading of Bamidar, the responsibilities that were placed upon the shoulders of the family of Kehas in the transporting of the Mishkan. Levi had three sons, Gershon, Kehas and Merari. Each of them was entrusted with a different task during the relocation of the Mishkan during their travels. The family of Kehas was charged with carrying the various sacred vessels used during the services within it. Gershon’s family was tasked with the removal of the curtains, coverings and screen that enveloped the Mishkan, and their accessories. Lastly, Merari and his children were to bear the heavy load of the planks, bars, pillars, and sockets, their pegs and ropes, that comprised the solid...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the United States government blames Iran for attacks on two oil tankers near the Persian Gulf, casting it as the latest in a series of "provocative actions" that have sharply raised tensions in the region. A U.S. assessment of Iran's responsibility for the attacks, which forced the evacuation of the crews in international waters, was based in part on intelligence as well as on the expertise needed to carry out the operation, Pompeo told reporters in Washington. It was also based on a recent series of incidents in the region that the U.S. blames on Iran, including a similar attack on tankers in the area in May and the bombing of an oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia by Iranian-backed fighters, he said. "Taken as a w...
Gov. Larry Hogan said he's encouraged by the burying of the hatchet between Baltimore City leaders and the owners of Pimlico Race Course. On Wednesday, Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young announced the city would withdraw a lawsuit that aimed to condemn and take over the track. The Maryland Jockey Club contended the city had no authority to regulate horse racing. Young and The Stronach Group, which owns the jockey club, are set to resume talks aimed at restarting what city officials called "good faith negotiations" on the future of horse racing in Baltimore. "I'm not sure that the lawsuit was helpful and I think both sides were at an impasse," Hogan told C4 on Thursday. "You're precluded from continuing discussions once a lawsuit is filed, right?" Hogan said he was se...
London - Katie Jones sure seemed plugged into Washington’s political scene. The 30-something redhead boasted a job at a top think tank and a who’s-who network of pundits and experts, from the centrist Brookings Institution to the right-wing Heritage Foundation. She was connected to a deputy assistant secretary of state, a senior aide to a senator and the economist Paul Winfree, who is being considered for a seat on the Federal Reserve. But Katie Jones doesn’t exist, The Associated Press has determined. Instead, the persona was part of a vast army of phantom profiles lurking on the professional networking site LinkedIn. And several experts contacted by the AP said Jones’ profile picture appeared to have been created by a computer program. “I’m convinced...
President Rivlin, thanking the many people who paid condolence calls during the shiva mourning for his wife, Nechama ז"ל: "Among the thousands of mourners who came to Beit HaNasi during the shiva, the schoolchildren moved us especially. They came, class by class, in their school shirts in case any of them got lost in the crowd. And, at the head of the group, the teacher. Some lessons are learnt outside the classroom, without a blackboard and chalk. Often, they are lessons in generosity, compassion and partnership. These are the lessons that the students and teachers of Israel taught me, even during the shiva, and for this I thank you from the bottom of my heart. My family and I are still in the first, difficult stage of grief, but the waves of love that flow fro...

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling for the release of all individuals who are reported missing as a result of armed conflict. Unanimously adopting Resolution 2474, the U.N.’s top body called upon parties in armed conflict to take all appropriate measures to actively search for individuals reported missing, to enable the return of their remains and to account for persons reported missing “without adverse distinction.” Briefing the Security Council after the resolution’s adoption, Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said that last year alone more than 45,000 people were registered as missing by the ICRC’s Central Tracing Agency, and that this figure was the tip of the iceberg. &ld...
