The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, said an iconic campus structure was repainted with “symbols and messages of hate” on Saturday, for the second time in as many weeks.
While officials did not specify what was painted on the Rock, photographs shared on Facebook by user Sandra Starr Marquis and her daughter, who attends the school, reveal a potpourri of offensive markings — among them swastikas, the white supremacist Celtic Cross, and the lightning bolt logo of Nazi Germany’s Schutzstaffel, which oversaw concentration and extermination camps during the Holocaust.
Various slogans were interspersed between the symbols, including, “Kill Jews,” “White man’s land,” and “Free Palestine.”

A Wisconsin school district plans to host a community program after a photograph surfaced of high school boys giving what appears to be a Nazi salute.
Baraboo Superintendent Lori Mueller said in a letter to parents Wednesday that the district is in the planning stages with civic, community and faith leaders to host the program. Mueller says details will be “shared as soon as possible.”
Mueller says, “We are so sorry that the actions of some of our students so understandably and deeply hurt people around the world.”

Detroit - Testing by AAA shows that electronic driver assist systems on the road today may not keep vehicles in their lanes or spot stationary objects in time to avoid a crash.
The tests brought a warning from the auto club that drivers shouldn’t think that the systems make their vehicles self-driving, and that they should always be ready to take control.
AAA also said that use of the word “pilot” by automakers in naming their systems can make some owners believe the vehicles can drive themselves.

Jerusalem - Martin Schlaff, a Jewish Austrian Billionaire, was involved in the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas this week, Channel 2 News reported.
According to the report, Schlaff, who is a close associate and friend of soon-to-be-former Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, served as a mediator in the negotiations which resulted in the ceasefire and led to Liberman’s resignation a day later. Channel 2 said that Schlaff’s involvement was denied by Liberman’s office.
The reaction from the prime ministers office said that they would not comment on mediators in the deal.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A man laced the atmosphere of a Baltimore theater with menace when he began shouting "Heil Hitler! Heil Trump!" during intermission of a classic play set in a Jewish village in czarist Russia. The patron's pro-Nazi and pro-Trump outburst during a Wednesday night production of "Fiddler on the Roof" sent panicked people running for the exits.

New York - The Statue of Liberty’s original torch, which has been housed in the base of the statue since a replica replaced it in the 1980s, was moved across Liberty Island on Thursday to its new home in a museum that will open next year.
Visitors watched as the base and the detached flame of the 3,600-pound (1,633-kilogram) torch were trucked slowly and carefully to the museum construction site about 100 yards (91 meters) from the statue.
Officials with the National Park Service and the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation said the torch was removed in 1984 because it was too badly damaged to restore.

Los Angeles - California regulators recommended new restrictions Thursday on a widely used pesticide blamed for harming the brains of babies.
The Department of Pesticide Regulation issued temporary guidelines for chlorpyrifos that include banning it from crop dusting, discontinuing its use on most crops and increasing perimeters around where it’s applied.
The Dow Chemical Co. pesticide currently used on about 60 different crops — including grapes, almonds and oranges — has increasingly come under fire from regulators, lawmakers and courts.

New York - As snow moved into the Tri-State just ahead of the evening commute, traffic problems were mounting across the area.
Even though the snow is not sticking, it was making for slick roads on Wednesday evening.
The Bayonne Bridge was closed in both directions and multiple accidents were reported on the George Washington Bridge, shutting down the upper-level eastbound lanes.
there were accidents both inbound and outbound on the GWB and they want to get the accidents cleared before spreading salt to make the roads as safe as possible. Drivers were strongly encouraged to avoid the GWB and use the Holland and Lincoln tunnels instead.
Due to overcrowding at Port Authority Bus Terminal, the second and third levels have been closed. They will reopen when conditions improve.

Washington - Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker has told Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will proceed. That’s according to a person familiar with the meeting.
Graham and Whitaker met Thursday as a bipartisan group of senators pushes legislation to protect Mueller’s job. The senators are concerned about Whitaker’s past criticism of the probe, which is looking at Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties to President Donald Trump’s campaign.
The person says Whitaker told Graham the investigation would be allowed to proceed. The person wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity.

allahassee, FL - Florida’s secretary of state has ordered a manual recount in the state’s hotly contested U.S. Senate race.
Department of State spokeswoman Sarah Revell said in a news release Thursday evening that unofficial returns from a machine recount had triggered a second recount in the Senate race and the state agriculture commissioner’s race.
The release said the results of the manual recounts are due by noon Sunday.
Unofficial recount results on the secretary of state’s website show Republican Gov. Rick Scott with a .15 percentage point lead over Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson. State law requires a hand recount of races with margins of 0.25 percentage points or less.
