Do you know this man? His name is Ari Fuld. And yesterday, in front of a grocery store just south of Jerusalem, this Jewish man was murdered by a teenage terrorist with a knife. He was, quite literally, stabbed in the back. And, suffering from a mortal wound, Ari Fuld, who, like his name, was a lion in defense of the Jewish people, managed to fire at his murderer before succumbing to his wounds.   Ari Fuld was a master defender of the Jewish people and the Land of Israel. His life intersected with thousands of other Israel lovers, Jews and non-Jews, throughout the world. It’s impossible to catalog this man’s contributions to the Jewish people’s miraculous return to the Land of Israel. But this story isn’t really about him. Not exactly.   As a rabbi&...

On Yom Kippur we magically transform into angels. We recite aloud that expression that is otherwise the exclusive domain of angels, ‘Blessed is the Name of His glorious kingdom for all of eternity.’ But aren’t we greater than angels? Wasn’t that Moshe’s response to the angels who questioned the wisdom of giving the Torah to mortals, when he convincingly asserted that humans who solely struggle against physical urges in making valiant free-willed choices, are clearly superior to angels, and well deserving of receiving the Torah that addresses issues of material challenge?   So why are we striving to be angels? The Zohar reveals that the Ish Iti, the designated man, who was charged with dispatching the he-goat off the cliff towards Azazel, casting ...
Brooklyn, NY - Multiple cars are on fire at Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Brooklyn, a mall spokesperson says, and video posted to social media shows thick smoke overwhelming the entire immediate area. A call about the fires in the parking garage at the mall on Avenue U and Flatbush Avenue came in shortly before 9 a.m. Monday. Citizen app video showed smoke spewing from the garage as bystanders crowded by emergency vehicles. There was no immediate word on possible injuries. The blaze quickly escalated from a two-alarm to a three-alarm fire and remained active as of 9:15 a.m. Dozens of emergency vehicles were responding; a mall spokesperson said to avoid the area until further notice. Kings Plaza has more than 120 stores, including Macy’s, Best Buy, Sears, H&M, Michael Kors, Ex...
Gaza - A medical source in the Palestinian Health Ministry backed away on Monday from an assertion that an 11-year-old boy killed at a protest on Friday at the border with Israel had been shot by Israeli soldiers. “The boy died of a head injury,” said the source, who asked not be identified, declining to give specifics and stopping short of attributing the death to Israeli gunfire. On Friday, Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the Health Ministry in Gaza, said the youth, Shadi Abdel-Al, had been shot dead by Israeli troops. Two other Palestinians were killed during the weekly protest by Israeli live fire, local medics said on Friday. An Israeli military spokeswoman, asked on Monday about the circumstances of the boy’s death and media reports that he had been killed by a s...

GENEVA (AP) — More than half of all workplace tasks will be carried out by machines by 2025, organizers of the Davos economic forum said in a report released Monday that highlights the speed with which the labor market will change in coming years. The World Economic Forum estimates that machines will be responsible for 52 percent of the division of labor as share of hours within seven years, up from just 29 percent today. By 2022, the report says, roughly 75 million jobs worldwide will be lost, but that could be more than offset by the creation of 133 million new jobs. A major challenge, however, will be training and re-training employees for that new world of work. “By 2025, the majority of workplace tasks in existence today will be performed by machines or algorithms. At t...
Seattle - Amazon.com Inc said on Monday it was investigating suspected internal leaks of confidential information by its employees for bribes to remove fake reviews and other seller scams from its website. Amazon employees are offering internal data and other classified information through intermediaries, to independent merchants selling their products on the site to help them boost sales in return for payments, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing sources. The practice, which is a violation of the company’s policy, is particularly strong in China, the report added, as the number of sellers there are soaring. “We hold our employees to a high ethical standard and anyone in violation of our code faces discipline, including termination and potential legal and crim...
WASHINGTON (AP) — A lawyer for a woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of assaulting her when they were in high school says her client is willing to tell her story publicly to the Senate panel considering his nomination. Kavanaugh has “categorically” denied those allegations, a denial repeated Monday by the White House. The Republican-controlled Senate panel appears committed to a vote on Kavanaugh later this week.
WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — With Wilmington cut off from the rest of North Carolina by still-rising floodwaters from Florence, officials plan to airlift food and water to the city of nearly 120,000 people as rescuers elsewhere pull inland residents from homes threatened by swollen rivers. The spreading disaster claimed additional lives Sunday, with at least 17 people confirmed dead, and the nation’s top emergency official said other states were in the path this week. “Not only are you going to see more impact across North Carolina ... but we’re also anticipating you are about to see a lot of damage going through West Virginia, all the way up to Ohio as the system exits out,” Brock Long of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Sunday on Fox News. Jerusalem - Israel has released an American law professor detained for allegedly trying to block Israeli troops in a West Bank village slated for demolition. The 66-year-old Frank Romano was detained on Friday in the embattled village of Khan al-Ahmar, along with two Palestinian activists. Witnesses said that Romano stood in front of heavy equipment being used to clear barriers that had been set up to slow demolition. Activists said he began a hunger strike while in detention. Gaby Lasky, Romano’s lawyer, said a court ordered his release Sunday. She said he was freed early Monday after police decided not to appeal the decision. Upon his release, Romano returned to the village and said: “I can continue the struggle with you.” Israel is expected to demolish the village...
Hazlet, NJ - Authorities say two swimmers drowned in New Jersey while trying to rescue another man who was later saved by police. The men were all swimming in the Thornes Creek in Hazlet when one of them started yelling for help around 2:40 p.m. Sunday. The two other men went to help the one who was struggling, but they soon went under and didn’t surface. Police soon found the first swimmer near the water’s edge. He was taken to a hospital. The bodies of the two other swimmers were found later Sunday. Authorities have not said whether the men knew one another.
Baltimore, MD, Sept. 17, 2018 — The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), representing over 1000 traditional Rabbis in American public policy, today condemned the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) for granting an award to a book "rife with anti-Semitic smears and demonization of moral conduct." The NWSA this year co-awarded its annual Alison Piepmeier Book Prize to The Right to Maim: Debility, Capacity, Disability, by Jasbir Puar. Puar, an associate professor of women's and gender studies at Rutgers University, writes that the "Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have shown a demonstrable pattern over decades of sparing life, of shooting to maim rather than to kill." But rather than commending this humane policy, the author calls it a "purportedly humanitarian practice" a...

Ari Fuld, Z'L, H'yd, was accompanied to his final resting place by thousands of stunned mourners just hours after chasing down and shooting the teenager who mortally stabbed him in order to prevent his attacker from harming others. Fuld’s funeral began shortly before midnight with high ranking Israeli officials including Chief Rabbi Dovid Lau, American Ambassador David Friedman and Minister of Agriculture Uri Uriel among those who came to pay their respects to the Efrat resident. Today we lost a hero. It took me a while to realize the magnitude of this loss. Ari Fuld, Z'L, H'yd, was a hero in all senses of the word. Loving and living the Kedushas Eretz Yisroel. I knew some of his incredible work and being inspired by his talks helped instill in me that feeling of yearning to return home. May Hashem welcome him into Gan Eden with open arms and bring Nechama (comfort) to his entire family. I don’t do this often but I had a little moment of inspiration to pen a quick tribute song. Please enjoy it and do a Mitzvah in his Zchus.
LONDON (AP) — Police closed roads and called a hazardous response team Sunday night after two people became ill at a restaurant in the English city where a Russian ex-spy and his daughter were poisoned with a chemical nerve agent. Wiltshire Police described the emergency steps taken in response to "a medical incident" in Salisbury as a precaution. Authorities later lifted the alert and said no evidence of the nerve agent Novichok involved in the earlier case was found when the two ill people were examined at a hospital. Salisbury spent months with quarantine tents and investigators in full-body protective gear combing for evidence after Sergei Skripal and his adult daughter were found unconscious on a bench in March. Its residents were put back on edge in June when a man and a wom...
