Every year, hundreds of people gather at Ohel Wosk on Moshav Matityahu to hear HaRav Zev Leff, Morah D'Asra of the Moshav, expound on various aspects of the kinnos on a relevant theme. This year the topic is "Topic: Yearning for Moshiach - What will the world be like in that glorious time."

Jerusalem - An Israeli soldier died after being shot by Palestinian militants on the Gaza border on Friday, the Israeli military said. The Israel Defence Forces soldier was shot near the southern Gaza Strip and later succumbed of his wounds, the military said in a statement.
Sefer Devarim encapsulates many of the events which transpired earlier in Sefer’s Shemos, Vayikra and Bamidbar.  Parshas Devarim in particular chronicles much of the travels, wars and mistakes made by Klal Yisroel in the Midbar.  Moshe Rabbeinu singles out the M’raglim for particular criticism in this weeks Parsha.   He similarly brought up the M’raglim with Shevet Reuven and Gad at the end of Parshas Mattos.  At that time, the leaders of Shevet Reuven and Gad had approached Moshe Rabbeinu to request that their Chelek be granted on the “other” side of the Yarden.  Moshe Rabbeinu responded with a blistering criticism of the request, (Mattos 31:1-15) comparing them to the M’raglim who also did not want to go into Eretz Yisroel...

Gaza - Israel targeted militant sites in Gaza, after Palestinians shot at its forces near the border, the military said Friday, with airstrikes and tank fire that Palestinian officials said killed at least three people. Israel’s military said Palestinians in Gaza had fired shots at soldiers near the border. It says it responded with airstrikes and tank fire at militant targets in Gaza. Gaza’s Health Ministry said at least three people were killed. In a statement Friday, Hamas confirmed all three killed were members of its group. Earlier Friday, Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman visited Sderot, an Israeli town near Gaza that has been hard hit by Palestinian rockets over the years. Lieberman said “the heads of Hamas are forcibly leading us to a no choice...
So many walls these days. The Israeli security one. The one President Trump wants to build along the Mexican border. The “Wall of Steel” erected around London’s Winfield House, where the president spent a night last week. And that older, conceptual wall, the one separating “church” and state — or, put more precisely, religion and government. Interestingly, the U.S. Constitution nowhere refers to such a construct. It was erected, piecemeal, over the years, its popularization beginning with its use by Thomas Jefferson, in an 1802 letter. When Justice Anthony Kennedy announced last month that he would be retiring from the Supreme Court, while Chicken Little was apparently unavailable, there was no lack of squawking in some circles over the imminent fallin...
In a shiur on the haggadah earlier this year I heard an interesting perspective on vehi she'amdah. Part of the retribution meted out upon those who seek to destroy us is that they endure a legacy of association with evil more so than others who might be guilty of equally nefarious deeds. This is not a concrete rule but consider, as an example, the liberal use of the word Nazi in association with anything evil. Conversely, how much of the general population are even aware of more recent perpetrators of similar heinous crimes such as Pol Pot or Slobodan Milošević. However, earlier on in our history, before many of our brutal persecutors came to be, there was a single paradigm of evil – Sedom and its neighbouring cities. Moshe Rabbeinu first references Sedom in the rebuke ...

Moshe reviews how previously he was overwhelmed with his judicial duties and had requested men of stature, good character and wisdom to assist him in administering justice among the nation. He instructed the populace to select men who are ‘well known to the tribes’ for these qualities. Why did Moshe need the people’s input, couldn’t he have determined those qualities himself? Rashi enlightens: Men whom you recognize, for if one were to come before me wrapped in his tallis, I would not know who he is and of what tribe he is, and whether he is suitable. But you know him, for you have raised him. Therefore, it says, well-known among your tribes.(דברים א יג) Is it feasible that Moshe, the greatest prophet who ever lived, was unable to dis...

San Francisco - Denying the Holocaust happened is probably OK on Facebook. Calling for a mob to kill Jews is not. Mark Zuckerberg’s awkward and eyebrow-raising attempt this week to explain where Facebook draws the line illustrates the complexities social media platforms face as they take on the unwanted role of referee in this age of online misinformation, manipulation and hate speech. Facebook, with 2.2 billion users, disallows such things as nudity, the selling of guns, credible threats of violence, and direct attacks on people because of their race, sex or sexual orientation. Hours after the Facebook founder’s comments about Holocaust deniers aired on Wednesday, the company announced it will also start removing misinformation that could lead to bloodshed. The policy wil...
Jerusalem - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, accompanied by his wife, visited the Western Wall on Friday morning, ending his two-day trip to Israel. He followed in the footsteps of US President Donald Trump, US Vice President Mike Pence and Prince William, who did the exact same thing before him. Upon his arrival to the holy site, Director of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation Mordechai Eliav talked to the Hungarian prime minister about the historical longing of the Jews for Jerusalem throughout generations and the history of the ancient stones. The Rabbi of the Western Wall Shmuel Rabinowitz then recited Psalm 21 with Orban and blessed him that all his prayers might be accepted willingly. Orban, impressed by the last two days, noted that his visit to Israel was too short and t...
Jerusalem -  A landmark half-billion-dollar Israeli plan to develop Palestinian areas of east Jerusalem and hoist residents out of poverty is getting a cool reception from the very people who are supposed to benefit. Israel says it hopes the program will improve living conditions in impoverished Palestinian neighborhoods and grant residents access to Israel’s robust economy. But the city’s long-neglected Palestinian community views the project with deep skepticism and mistrust, fearing it is a way of cementing Israel’s control over the eastern sector after more than 50 years of occupation. “All these projects have nothing to do with improving our lives,” said Ziad Hammoury, who heads the Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights, an advocacy group...
Taylor Hayes, a seven-year-old girl who was critically injured in a shooting July 5, has died, Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith said on Twitter Thursday. That afternoon, police responded to Edmondson Avenue and Lyndhurst Street before 2:30 p.m. for reports of gunshots. During a news conference, police said Taylor Hayes was shot in the 500 block of Lyndhurst Street and that numerous shots were fired. "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Taylor. She fought very hard. Her family is in our thoughts and prayers," Baltimore police said in a statement. Residents of the neighborhood where Taylor was shot heard the gunfire. "We heard the shot, but we didn't know where it was coming from," said Doreatha Chapman, a resident. "You hit the ground. We have learned to sit do...
BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — At least 11 people, including children, died after a boat carrying tourists on a Missouri lake capsized and sank Thursday night, the local sheriff said. Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said five people remain missing and seven others were hospitalized after a Ride the Ducks boat sank on Table Rock Lake in Branson. A spokeswoman for the Cox Medical Center Branson said four adults and three children arrived at the hospital shortly after the incident. Two adults were in critical condition and the others were treated for minor injuries, Brandei Clifton said. Rader said the stormy weather was believed to be the cause of the capsizing. Another duck boat on the lake was able to safely make it back to shore. Steve Lindenberg, a National Weather Service meteorologist i...
Maal Zakarna, a columnist for Jordan’s Ad-Dustour daily claimed several days ago that Israel caused the recent earthquakes by testing nuclear weapons or a new type of weapon underground. MEMRI reported that according to Zakarna, these “experiments” are part of Israel’s attempt to cause a man-made earthquake in order to collapse Al-Aqsa mosque,. “The earthquakes focused especially on the area of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee – ed.) and its surroundings and measured around 4 on the Richter scale,” Zakarna wrote in his article. “This raises the question of what caused these earthquakes, their timing, and their location. It could be [this would be done] in order to test new weapons, such as smaller nuclear bombs which have limited influence, or ...
President Trump in an early morning tweet on Thursday blasted the “Fake News Media,” saying many of the stories written about him and his staff are “total fiction.” “The Fake News Media is going Crazy! They make up stories without any backup, sources or proof. Many of the stories written about me, and the good people surrounding me, are total fiction,” he tweeted. “Problem is, when you complain you just give them more publicity. But I’ll complain anyway!” Trump went on to to complain about the media’s coverage of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The Fake News Media wants so badly to see a major confrontation with Russia, even a confrontation that could lead to war,” Trump said in a subsequent twee...
