A federal prosecutor says a former U.S. Postal Service worker who burned at least 20 tubs of mail over five months has pleaded guilty to a single count of delaying or destroying the mail.
U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook said in a news release Friday that 50-year-old Mark Wayne Thompson took mail from his rural postal route in Louisiana to his home in Pitkin, where from Dec. 1, 2016 to May 1, 2017, he burned at least 20 tubs of mail.
The former letter carrier now faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is set for April 6.

arishioners prayed Sunday for those killed and for families still searching for missing relatives in a Southern California community ravaged by mudslides, and authorities announced another body had been found, increasing the death toll to 20.
The body of 30-year-old Pinit Sutthithepa was discovered Saturday afternoon. His 2-year-old daughter, Lydia, remained missing. His 6-year-old son, Peerawat, nicknamed Pasta, and his 79-year-old father-in-law, Richard Loring Taylor, also were killed in the mudslides.
"This family is one of several that lost multiple family members," Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said. "And we know that the suffering of those who knew and loved all of the victims is immense."
The list of those still missing in the mudslides has shrunk to four.

FBI agents knew the gunman behind the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history left behind big caches of guns, ammunition and explosives when they sought warrants to search his properties and online accounts, according to court documents released Friday.
However, new questions were raised after a U.S. judge in Nevada unsealed the documents revealing some of what federal agents had learned about shooter Stephen Paddock in the week after the Las Vegas attack.

Members of India’s tiny Jewish community are disappointed that they will not be invited to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his upcoming visit to Mumbai, according to an active member of the community.
In a signature campaign addressed to Netanyahu last week, Solomon F. MIAMI (AP) - A high-speed train that was offering preview runs in Florida a day before its debut has struck and killed a woman.
Boynton Beach police say 31-year-old Melissa Lavell was struck by the Brightline train after the sun set on Friday.
Witnesses tell police the woman was crossing the tracks after the guard rails were down, attempting to beat the train. No one on the train was injured.
The high-speed train began service in South Florida on Saturday running between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. It will expand south and north to take passengers from Miami to Orlando.

Jerusalem - Thousands of mourners filled the streets of Jerusalem, paying a final tribute to Rabbi Yehoshua Maman, a prominent Sephardic rabbi who was believed to be Israel’s most senior Moroccan rabbi.
Rabbi Maman, who was 100 years old, served as the chief rabbi of Nahariya and as the head of the Be’er Sheva Beis Din in Beer Sheva.

The Shin Bet security service and the Israel Police arrested Israeli Arab Hassan Khaled Taher Sheikh Yusef, 26, from the Arab city of Taibeh in central Israel, on suspicion of supporting the ISIS terror organization, and intentions to carry out an attack inspired by the organization.
The investigation found that between the years 2014-2015 Yusef began strengthening his Islamic observance and approached the ISIS organization, during which time he viewed ISIS-related Internet content and explored possibilities of joining the organization in Syria.
The investigation also indicated that Yusef had viewed training material for preparing explosives and even tried to convince another to purchase an M16 rifle with him.

A plan to alter the Kotel Plaza and give the Reform movement partial authority over a portion of the site has officially been cancelled, the State declared Sunday.
The announcement was made during a hearing by an expanded panel of seven Supreme Court justices which was held in response to a series of petitions concerning the Kotel layout plan Sunday morning, Behadrei Haredim reported.

Father of rabbi murdered in shooting attack says family does not want vengeance, but life.
Moshe Shevach, the father of Rabbi Raziel Shevach, who was murdered in a terrorist shooting attack near Havat Gilad in Samaria last week, spoke to Arutz Sheva about his son and the days following his murder.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), Major General Yoav Mordechai, spoke out Sunday on the destruction of the terror tunnel which was discovered in the Gaza Strip under the Kerem Shalom crossing in an interview with Arabic television station Al-Hurairah Sunday.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A man admitted in court Friday to leaving an explosive device at a western North Carolina airport last year, claiming his crime was a "training scenario" meant to show that law enforcement agents weren't ready to stop terrorist attacks.
Michael Christopher Estes pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of explosive material. Another charge he originally faced — attempted malicious use of explosives — was dropped. A fully-booked passenger plane came within yards of plunging into the sea after it skidded off a runway.
The Pegasus Airlines flight descended into chaos when it tried to land at the ice covered Trabzon Airport in Turkey.

NEW YORK (AP) — Flu is now widespread in every state except Hawaii, but the good news is the season appears to already be peaking.
It's been a rough few weeks: Hospitals have set up tents to handle patient overflow. Doctors are putting in double and triple shifts. Ambulances have been sidelined while paramedics waited to drop off patients.

General Motors says it is making the first mass-production autonomous car without a steering wheel or pedals.
The company says it has filed a petition with the federal government seeking permission to put the vehicles on the road sometime next year with no human backup drivers.
GM's Cruise Automation unit has announced plans to carry passengers in self-driving cars that won't have a backup driver in 2019. The location of the service has not been revealed.
