Baltimore, MD - Oct.. 17, 2017 - When the physical world was destroyed in the mabul, it was because the people had corrupted the world internally. Noach was supposed to use the 120 years of building the teivah in order to correct the internal rotting of the world, so that it would not have to be completely wiped away. Although Noach did not succeed at this job, Avraham Avinu did—saving the world through connecting others with Hashem, and turning people toward each other favorably. The physical world comes together—or breaks apart—due to the state of the inner realms, i.e. the actions of humankind. Click here to listen

Baltimore, MD - October 16, 2017 - Despite the late notice, hundreds of people from across the Baltimore community joined in the Tehilim gathering held, last evening, in the Bais Yaakov of Baltimore High School Auditorium--and via conference call with over 700 calls from all over US, Canada and Eretz Yisroel—as a zechus for a refuah shlaimah for Rabbi Mendel Don Freedman (Menachem Mendel Don ben Chana Serel). The Austrian National Union of Students on Friday condemned the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement against Israel as antisemitic, and urged for it to not be given funds or event space. The resolution received near unanimous support, with no votes against it and one abstention. The union also adopted a version of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which includes “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination.” Leaders of the BDS movement have repeatedly gone on record claiming that Israel has no right to exist. The Austrian Union of Jewish Students applauded the passage of the resolution, saying in a statement on Friday, “This has been a big step in the fight against ...
U.S.-backed forces said they have captured Islamic State's de facto capital of Raqqa, Syria, wrenching away the group's last major urban stronghold in the Middle East. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, backed by U.S. airstrikes and American special forces on the ground, said they had concluded their four-month battle for the city Islamic State used as a nerve center to plan and stage attacks on the West. The Supreme Court is intervening in a digital-age privacy dispute between the Trump administration and Microsoft over emails stored abroad. The justices say Monday they will hear the administration’s appeal of a lower court ruling in favor of Microsoft. The court held the emails sought in a drug trafficking investigation were beyond the reach of a search warrant because they were kept on a Microsoft server in Ireland. The case is among several legal clashes that Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft and other technology companies have had with the government over questions of digital privacy and authorities’ need for information to combat crime and extremism. Privacy law experts say the companies have been more willing to push back against the government since the leak o...
A couple of months before Auschwitz was liberated in January 1945, a Jewish prisoner secretly wrote a letter outlining the horrors he had witnessed there. He placed it in a thermos, the thermos in a leather pouch, and he buried it. Now, for the first time, Marcel Nadjari’s words have been published in full. Historian Pavel Polian told Deutsche Welle the letter is one of nine buried documents found at the concentration camp. He described them as “the most central documents of the Holocaust.” The documents were written by Nadjari and four fellow members of the “Sonderkommando” unit, which was tasked with moving bodies from the gas chamber to the crematorium. Nadjari’s letter, found in 1980, was written in his native Greek and is mostly illegible....
The FBI is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for arson and graffiti at a North Carolina Republican Party office last year. At the time, authorities said the Orange County GOP office was set on fire with a flammable device. Someone also spray-painted an anti-Republican slogan on the building which referred to “Nazi Republicans.” No one was inside the building at the time of the fire on Oct. 16, 2016. A news release from the FBI said a $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to solving the crime. Investigators are also seeking information to determine whether there’s a connection between the Hillsborough incident and vandalism that occurred in Carrboro in September 2015 which officials say targeted an ou...
Facebook’s effort to limit the spread of fake news using outside fact-checkers appears to be having an effect — though that finding comes with a major caveat. Once a story receives a false rating from a fact-checker, Facebook says, subsequent “impressions” can fall off by 80 percent. Impressions count the number of times Facebook users see a particular post. But it routinely takes more than three days for a story to receive a false rating. And most impressions occur when the story first comes out, not three days later. That’s the case with both true news and fake news. The information was shared in an email from a Facebook manager sent to the company’s fact-checking partners, including The Associated Press. Facebook gave an AP reporter access to...
Turkey’s government says it will ask parliament to extend for a fifth time the state of emergency that was declared following last year’s failed military coup. Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said Monday the state of emergency would be prolonged by a further three months to allow a “more effective” fight against the coup-plotters and what he called terrorist groups. Turkey launched a massive crackdown after the coup, arresting some 50,000 people and dismissing more than 110,000 from government jobs. Critics say the government has used its emergency powers to go after all opponents, including politicians, journalists and activists. The state of emergency was due to expire on Oct. 19. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said it would be regularly extended ...
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley says that President Donald Trump is strengthening his ability to resolve the North Korea nuclear crisis by threatening to abandon the nuclear deal with Iran. Haley is defending Trump’s decision not to certify Iran’s compliance with the deal. Trump’s critics argue he’s undermining U.S. credibility and options for diplomacy because North Korea will determine the U.S. doesn’t honor its commitments. But Haley says that argument is “just wrong.” She says it’s the opposite. Haley says failing to fix the 2015 deal with Iran would send the message that the United States “can be bought by a bad deal” that doesn’t actually eliminate the nuclear threat. Haley is speaking to an ...

Pakistani intelligence officials say suspected U.S. missiles have struck a home in the Kurram tribal region, killing 20 terrorists. Two intelligence officials said missiles fired from a suspected US drone hit a compound in the Mukbal area near the Afghan border Monday evening. They added that it was being used by militants from Haqqani network and that one of their top commanders, Sangeen Wali, was killed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media. The strike comes a day after roadside bombs killed four security troops engaged in a search operation for militants in Kurram. Pakistan considers the drone strike a violation of its sovereignty, while the U.S. accuses Pakistan of providing safe havens for militants, which Pakistan denies.
Security researchers have discovered a Wi-Fi network vulnerability that could allow attackers to steal sensitive information or spread malicious software while someone is logged into a computer or mobile device. A report published Monday said the breach could only happen if an attacker is within range of the potential victim, but the weakness could affect anyone using a Wi-Fi network, whether at home, the office or at a public coffee shop. The Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry group, says there’s no evidence that the vulnerability discovered by researcher Mathy Vanhoef has been exploited maliciously. It affects WPA2, a protocol used to secure Wi-Fi networks. The group says the problem can be resolved through straightforward software updates. Major platform providers have already s...
President Donald Trump said Monday that he believes Cuba is responsible for unexplained, invisible attacks in Cuba that have harmed American government workers. Though Trump’s comments appeared to be a new allegation, it wasn’t clear whether he meant Cuba was behind the attacks or merely shared the onus because it failed to keep Americans safe on its soil. The United States has avoided casting blame on Cuban President Raul Castro’s government for the attacks that began last year and have eluded an FBI investigation. “I do believe Cuba’s responsible. I do believe that,” Trump said in a Rose Garden news conference. “And it’s a very unusual attack, as you know. But I do believe Cuba is responsible.” The president did not elaborate...
