President Donald Trump’s support wasn’t enough for Luther Strange to win the GOP nomination in Alabama’s U.S. Senate race. Will the story be different in South Carolina’s gubernatorial contest? Fresh off the Alabama defeat of his chosen candidate to replace Jeff Sessions, Trump is again wading into southern horse-race politics, visiting South Carolina on Monday to lend his support the campaign of Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, one of his earliest backers. But some here in this ultra-red state are seeing some similarities with the high-profile defeat in Alabama. Despite Trump’s endorsement, McMaster faces a strong challenger: anti-union attorney Catherine Templeton, who has amassed a campaign war chest commensurate with McMaster’s. She even toppe...
European Union foreign ministers on Monday backed the Iran nuclear agreement, saying the accord is working and is a key part of non-proliferation efforts despite U.S. President Donald Trump withdrawing his support for it. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, whose team has been a key player in drawing up the deal to curtail Iran’s nuclear ambitions, suggested that domestic U.S. politics was at play in Trump’s decision. Trump “decertified” the deal Friday, angrily accusing Iran of violating the 2015 international nuclear accord, and directed the U.S. Congress to make it more stringent. But he did not pull the U.S. out or re-impose nuclear sanctions. “The EU is committed to the continued full and effective implementation of all parts” of th...
The European Union has slapped new sanctions on North Korea for developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. The sanctions agreed by EU foreign ministers Monday include a total ban on EU investment in North Korea, and a ban on the sale of refined petroleum products and crude oil. The EU slashed from 15,000 to 5,000 euros ($17,700 to 5,900) the amount of money people can send to North Korea, as it believes these “personal remittances” are used to back Pyongyang’s arms programs. The ministers also decided not to renew work permits for North Koreans working on their territories, apart from refugees and others in need of international protection. Asset freezes and travel bans were slapped on a further three people and six “entities,” which are usua...

The White House says Trump will travel in November to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines from Nov. 3 to Nov. 14. Trump will also stop in Hawaii. The White House said that in South Korea, Trump will meet with President Moon Jae-in (jah-yihn) and “call on the international community to join together in maximizing pressure on North Korea.” In Japan, Trump will meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh AH’-bay) and participate in a meeting with families of “Japanese citizens abducted by the North Korean regime.” Trump will also meet with leaders of China, Vietnam and the Philippines and attend ...

HOLDING HANDS is an inspiring story with an uplifting message from Rabbi Yechiel Spero because “together we can, together we will”
NEWARK — After raising Sen. Robert Menendez’s hopes last week, a federal judge crushed them on Monday morning. U.S. District Court Judge William Walls refused to toss any of the 18 charges in the corruption case against Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, despite last week casting doubt on a legal theory that’s at the heart of the prosecution’s case. Walls last week cast doubt on the “stream of benefits” theory — in which a public official's actions can be defined as bribery if those actions can be linked to gifts received over a lengthy period of time. Much of the prosecution’s case against Menendez and co-defendant Salomon Melgen relies on the theory. Melgen, prosecutors argue, gave Menendez private jet flights, hotel stays and about $7...
A New Jersey man was convicted Monday of planting two pressure-cooker bombs on New York City streets, including one that injured 30 people with a rain of shrapnel when it detonated in a bustling neighborhood on a weekend night last summer. The verdict in Manhattan came after a two-week trial of 29-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghanistan-born man living in Elizabeth. The charges, including using a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place, carry a maximum punishment of life in prison. Prosecutors said Rahimi considered himself “a soldier in a holy war against Americans” and was inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida to carry out the late summer attacks in New York and New Jersey. He was found guilty of all the charges against him. The defense sa...
Hillary Clinton has told an Australian state broadcaster that WlkiLeaks founder Julian Assange was a tool of Russia in his release of hacked emails that hurt the U.S. Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign. Clinton told Australian Broadcasting Corp. in an interview broadcast on Monday that the Australian whistleblower had “become a kind of nihilistic opportunist who does the bidding of a dictator,” Russian President Vladimir Putin. “He’s a tool of Russian intelligence, and if he’s such a … martyr of free speech, why doesn’t WikiLeaks ever publish anything coming out of Russia?” she said. Clinton was complaining about WikiLeaks’ publication during the 2016 election campaign of politically damaging emails from the Demo...
It’s the New Year of 5778 Habah Aleinu L’Tovah. We have just finished a very hectic 3 weeks where a lot of eating and sedentary life style have been the rule.  This was very challenging and difficult to navigate when it came to managing our health.  But while we look forward to the coming year, we see it isn’t just this time of the year that requires good preparation and planning if we want to stay healthy.  Indeed there will be challenges throughout the coming year, and more often than you might anticipate. Harold has been working with me for weight loss for a while. It took a while for Harold to understand that all of the yearly events and personal events cannot be an excuse for poor health.  As his health was beginning to take a turn for the worse,...
Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is expected to plead guilty Monday to charges that he endangered comrades by walking away from a remote post in Afghanistan in 2009. The U.S. Army said Bergdahl asked to enter his plea before the military judge at Fort Bragg. The Associated Press previously reported that he’s expected to plead guilty to charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. It’s not clear if Bergdahl, 31, has a deal with prosecutors to limit his punishment, or if he’s simply pleading guilty in hopes of leniency from the judge, Army Col. Jeffery R. Nance. The misbehavior charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, while the desertion charge is punishable by up to five years. Guilty pleas would bring the highly politicized saga closer to an end eight...
At least a dozen people were injured – one of them critically – when a three-alarm blaze ripped through a Boro Park apartment building. The fire broke out around 4:30AM Monday in a kitchen on the second floor of the four-story building located at 1225 49th Street near 12 Avenue. It quickly rose up the cockloft to the top floors. A woman trapped in a rear bedroom of an apartment had to be rescued by the FDNY. Nine other people were evacuated with the help of firefighters through the roof of the building. About 135 firefighters fought the blaze and got it under control in about 90 minutes. The 13 other patients, including four firefighters, were all in stable condition. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Shortly after the fire was brought under control, ...
In the first Pasuk of Parshas Noach, there is a Rashi which calls out for deeper analysis and explanation.  The famous Rashi, “B’Dorosav”, quotes conflicting opinions in Chazal as to what the pasuk means when it says that Noach was a Tzadik “in his generation”.  One opinion is that Noach was a complete Tzadik.  The other view is that Noach was only a Tzadik “B’Dorosav” – when compared to the Reshaim of his generation.  This derogatory description even goes so far as to say “Had Noach lived in Avraham’s Dor, Lo Nechshav Klum- he wouldn’t have been recognized as an outstanding individual”.  This Rashi raises several difficult issues. First, it is unusual for Chazal to have a disagree...
Massive stress has been placed on the government by the Chareidi parties in the coalition as well as by the Movement for a Jewish and Democratic State in order to set a date that new Daayanim will be appointed to Rabbinical courts. According to Eichler, the letter was sent before Yom Kippur. Eichler letter also demande...

They were not hit. The SA-5 battery was “incapacitated” at about 10:00am. All jets returned to safely to their bases. Russian forces in Syria were notified in real time, Conricus said, adding that Israel holds Syria responsible for an...
