Against a backdrop of cyberattacks that have grown into full-fledged sabotage, Facebook chief security officer Alex Stamos is bringing a new message to hackers and security experts at the Black Hat conference. In short: it’s time for hackers once known for relatively harmless mischief to shoulder responsibility for helping detect and prevent major attacks. The Black Hat security gathering, starting Wednesday in Las Vegas, follows a series of attacks and data breaches that have paralyzed hospitals, disrupted commerce, caused blackouts and interfered with national elections. Stamos, a keynote speaker, is planning to call for more emphasis on defense — and basic digital hygiene — over the thrilling hunt for undiscovered vulnerabilities. Stamos joined Facebook from Yahoo,...
House Republican allies of President Donald Trump are intent on giving him a long-sought victory in Congress by finally making a down payment on his long-promised wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. They just don’t want to risk an up-or-down vote on the idea that might risk an embarrassing loss on the House floor. The $1.6 billion cost will be covered by taxpayers, not Mexico, as Trump promised over and over during the campaign. Action this week comes about three months after Democrats blocked an earlier attempt to deliver a down payment on Trump’s project. But the August congressional recess is looming, and GOP leaders are making a House win on the border wall a top priority. “This week, we’re going to take action on key elements of the president’s str...
Authorities say an inmate who escaped from a section of New York City’s Rikers Island jail complex has been found on the island. The inmate was captured around 3 a.m. Friday after law enforcement agencies launched a massive manhunt when the prisoner was reported missing Thursday night. 24-year-old burglary suspect Naguan Hill never left the island, and was found around 2:50 a.m. Police say the inmate had jumped a fence at the Anna M. Kross Center Jail, and tried to hide, waiting for a chance to escape the island. The preliminary investigation indicates that some of the inmates may have intentionally distracted two guards while Hill climbed the fence. The jail was placed on lockdown as the New York police, Port Authority police and correction officers searched the island and surro...
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is knocking down a flurry of speculation that he is unhappy in his job and may soon quit. Asked about the resignation rumors on Wednesday, Tillerson told reporters at the State Department that “I’m not going anywhere.” He said he would remain as the nation’s top diplomat “as long as the president lets me.” Asked about his relationship with President Donald Trump, Tillerson replied “It’s good.” Washington has been buzzing with rumors since the beginning of the week that Tillerson will soon leave his post due to frustration with Trump and others in the White House. The State Department had previously denied them but Wednesday marked the first time that Tillerson has addressed them directly.
Scrolling through an ad-free Instagram is now a distant memory, much like the once ad-free Facebook itself. Soon, users of its Messenger app will begin to see advertisements, too — and WhatsApp may not be too far behind. Welcome to the Facebook ad creep. The world’s biggest social media company has squeezed about as many ads onto its main platform as it can. The fancy term for this is “ad load,” and Facebook warned investors back in 2016 that it has pretty much maxed it out . Put any more ads in front of users and they might start complaining — or worse, just leave. As such, Facebook, a free service that relies almost completely on ads to make money, has to keep finding new and creative ways to let businesses hawk their stuff on its properties. One solutio...
The U.S. Pacific Fleet commander said Thursday he would launch a nuclear strike against China next week if President Donald Trump ordered it, and warned against the military ever shifting its allegiance from its commander in chief. Adm. Scott Swift was addressing an Australian National University security conference following a major joint U.S.- Australian military exercise off the Australian coast. The drills were monitored by a Chinese intelligence-gathering ship off northeast Australia. Asked by an academic in the audience whether he would make a nuclear attack on China next week if Trump ordered it, Swift replied: “The answer would be yes.” Every member of the U.S. military had sworn an oath to obey the president as the commander in chief, Swift said. “This is cor...

[Ed. Note] Out of the respect and recognition of the impact made by longtime BJL friend and contributor, Reb Shaya Gross, z’l, we will maintain a living memoriam to Shaya through the sweet words and thoughtful insights of  his Divrei Torah. BJL readers will remember his weekly column on the Parsha and on various Torah ideas and concepts. These meaningful words will help us remember this special young man who will be sorely missed and for those who did not merit to know him, this will be the most appropriate way for them to become familiar with who he was. In this week's Parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu blesses the Jewish people that they will increase a thousand fold. Rashi cites the Sifri, which quotes the following dialogue between Moshe and Klal Yisroel: Klal Yisroel ask Moshe,...
Federal officials have given a giant airtanker approval to fight wildfires in the U.S., but a lack of contracts currently limits the aircraft to California and one county in Colorado. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Interagency Airtanker Board issued the 17-month interim approval on Tuesday for the aircraft capable of carrying 19,200 gallons (72,700 liters) of liquid. Global SuperTanker Services CEO Jim Wheeler said Wednesday the company is close to signing a contract with two states. “The next step is for us to try to get a contract with the Forest Service,” he said. Such a contract would allow a state to be reimbursed by the federal government if the aircraft fought fires in that state. Wheeler said he hopes to get such a contract this year so the aircraft can ...
A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person  - Mignon McLaughlin We are decidedly troubling beings.  We are at once noble and sanctified creatures, imbued with the glory and holiness of God while, at the same time, being vulnerable and petty creatures, mired in the sad and troubling realities of the physical world around us, realities that are often the result of our own selfish and foolish behavior. No period of time drives our troubling nature home more forcefully than the Three Weeks.  Beginning when, historically, the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans and reaching their mournful, painful crescendo on Tisha B’Av, the date on which the weight, number and overwhelming calamities weighing on us find us grieving...
Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House communications director who was brought in to bring order to a press shop in turmoil, called into CNN’s “New Day” on Thursday and all but blamed chief of staff Reince Priebus for leaking information in a more then 30-minute-long interview. The interview comes hours after Scaramucci copied Priebus in a tweet about leaks, later deleted the tweet and then told CNN — before his interview — that the message was not a call for the FBI to investigate the chief of staff. “When I put out a tweet and I put Reince’s name in a tweet, they’re all make the assumption that it’s him because journalists know who the leakers are,” Scaramucci said. “So if Reince wants to explain he’s not a leaker...
Evidence of the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians has recently been unearthed in the City of David in excavations conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authoirty at the Jerusalem Walls National Park, funded by the City of David Foundation (Elad). In the excavations, concentrated on the eastern slope of the City of David, structures dating to more than 2,600 years ago have been unearthed after having been covered over by collapsed layers of stone. Nestled within the collapse, many findings have surfaced: charred wood, grape seeds, pottery, fish scales and bones, and unique, rare artifacts. These findings depict the affluence and character of Jerusalem, capital of the Judean Kingdom, and are mesmerizing proof of the city's demise at the hands of the Babylonians. ...
The Knesset Caucus for US/Israel Relations in partnership with the Ruderman Family Foundation officially welcomed US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman at a warm reception in Jerusalem on Tuesday 2 Av, which included over 40 MKs from various political parties. This is the first time in the history of Israel that the Knesset conducted an official event to welcome any foreign ambassador. The Members of Knesset were in attendance to welcome and honor Ambassador Friedman, each speaking freely about issues that were most concerning for them, including moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem, escalating threats from Iran, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, recent diplomatic issues with Jordan, and other strife within the Jewish World. “Our governments are joined at the hip in many respects an...
Police in New York state may soon have a high-tech way of catching texting drivers: a device known as a “textalyzer” that allows an officer to quickly check if a phone has been in use before a crash. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday directed the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to examine the technology, as well as the questions about privacy and civil liberties its use would raise. “Despite laws to ban cellphone use while driving, some motorists still continue to insist on texting behind the wheel — placing themselves and others at substantial risk,” Cuomo said in a statement first reported by The Associated Press. “This review will examine the effectiveness of using this new emerging technology to crack down on this reckless behavio...
After a group of chareidim visited Jordan for Aharon HaKohen’s yahrzeit and were harassed, prevented from davening and threatened with arrest by police, HaGaon HaRav Bentzion Mutzafi speaks out against travel to the Hashemite Kingdom. The rav was asked for his opinion about travel to Jordan, as the group did for the yahrzeit, and he is vehemently against trips to Jordan. “Of course, they did an irresponsible act by heading to a hostile Arab country, a dangerous area during these troubled times. Even among the Egyptians, and during the times of the Yishmaelim, the blood thirsty ones stand up against us in all places” stated the rav. A number of talmidim asked the rav if they should travel for the yahrzeit and he told them “no”, and when asked about ...
The draft regulations that were approved on Tuesday, 2 Av by the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee approved amendments to the regulations, which bring great news to the chareidi tzibur. The problematic section of the minimum number of students in the institution required to receive recognition for the purpose of granting an exemption, which was due to the reduction in the age of exemption to 24, was the concern that institutions in the periphery with few students as in the kollels could not be recognized. The regulations approved reduced the number of students required for recognition to five students, while in the past the number was 10 students. This makes it significantly easier for small kollels. In addition, due to the efforts of Knesset members, a special section was...

Father of Halamish widow speaks about his daughter, his country, and his grandchildren's future. Speaking with Arutz Sheva, father of the widowed Michal Salomon Dan Landau said his daughter responded bravely in a situation which would "paralyze even trained commandos." "Her story is really inspirational," Landau said. "It's the story of a woman who in order to protect her children behaved bravely with an amazing response to a situation that I think would paralyze even trained commando soldiers. You have to see the picture." "She was sitting in her dining room, prepared for a celebration...
In accordance with Waqf demands, Israel removes railings and scaffolding from entrance to Temple Mount. Israel on Wednesday removed more security installations from the entrance to the Temple Mount compound. Newly installed railings and scaffolding where cameras were previously mounted were removed from the entrance to the compound, according to AFP. The removal of the railings was one of the demands raised by the Jordanian Waqf to end the crisis. The Waqf also demanded that all eight entrances leading to the Al-Aqsa Mosque be opened in full, and that five more cameras overlooking the compound be removed as well. The security cameras themselves had already been removed earlier in the week, immediately after the Cabinet decided to remove the metal detectors t...
