The Senate has blocked a wide-ranging proposal by Republicans to repeal much of former President Barack Obama’s health care law and replace it with a more restrictive plan. The Hill reported that the nine Republicans included GOP Sens. Susan Collins, Bob Corker, Tom Cotton, Lindsey Graham, Dean Heller, Mike Lee, Jerry Moran, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul. The list includes both moderates and conservatives. The vote underscored problems Republicans will have in winning enough votes to recast Obama’s statute. The rejected proposal included language by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell erasing the Obama ...

Mahwah, NJ - While Mahwah residents say they were blindsided by the eruv that was erected in their township, at least some village officials were aware of the eruv plans weeks ago. As previously reported on VIN News (http://bit.ly/2h13FiJ), Mahwah residents discovered last week that an eruv had been put up in their township after noticing white PVC piping appearing on numerous utility poles. Township officials notified the eruv committee that the piping violated a town ordinance against posting signs on utility poles and gave the committee until August 4th to remove the eruv. A grassroots effort to remove the eruv, which relies almost entirely on the existing telephone wires instead of the usual string, kicked off Monday night at an emotional meeting held in a local park. Rabb...

Elias Josael Jimenez Alvarado declined an offer Tuesday to plead guilty to murder in exchange for life in prison, opting instead to stand trial for the strangling deaths of two Baltimore women. The 21-year-old from El Salvador was charged with two killings last September. On Sept. 8, police on midnight patrol were called to the 3900 block of Dolfield Ave., in Northwest Baltimore, for a report of a woman screaming. The officers cut their headlights and crept up to the scene, finding a man over the body of Ranarda Williams, 35. The man fled into a nearby garage, but was caught and arrested. Williams had been strangled, police said. Police identified the man as Alvarado, whom authorities said was in the country illegally. Police have said they know little about his background. Police also...
The director of the Chabad center serving the University of California-Davis told The Algemeiner on Tuesday that he was “taking seriously” a Friday sermon made by the imam of the local mosque that some have called antisemitic. Rabbi Shmary Brownstein said the comments from Ammar Shahin of the Islamic Center of Davis — which sits blocks away from Chabad of Davis — had “unacceptably advocated and incited hatred and violence against Jews” by praying that god would “liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews.” In his sermon, translated by the Middle East Research Institute TV Monitor Project, Shahin continued, “Oh Allah, destroy those who closed the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Oh Alla...
During a meeting with a Kremlin-linked banker last year, Jared Kushner — President Donald Trump’s Jewish son-in-law and senior adviser — received a pair of presents connected to his family background. In a statement released by the White House ahead of Kushner’s appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Monday, Kushner described a Dec. 13 sit-down in New York City with Sergey Gorkov — the chairman of state-owned Vnesheconombank and an ally of Russia’s autocratic president, Vladimir Putin. “The meeting with Mr. Gorkov lasted twenty to twenty-five minutes,” Kushner recalled. “He introduced himself and gave me two gifts — one was a piece of art from Nvgorod [an apparent misspelling by Kushner of Novogrudok], ...

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley expressed frustration on Tuesday with the UN Security Council’s attitude toward Iran and its terrorist proxies in the Middle East. “Truth be told, the Security Council often makes the Middle East more complicated than it actually is,” Haley said at the Security Council’s monthly meeting on the region. “It obsesses over Israel. And it refuses to acknowledge one of the chief sources of conflict and killing in the Middle East — that is, Iran and its partner militia, Lebanese Hezbollah.” Haley began her remarks by affirming that the US “shares everyone’s concern about the heightened tensions in Jerusalem.” “All parties should work to reduce these tensions, and we offer whatever assista...
Speaker Paul Ryan says President Donald Trump gets to decide his personnel. Ryan’s comment came amid reports that the president has spoken with advisers about firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Ryan told reporters on Tuesday that it’s the prerogative of the president to decide who works for him and if the president has concerns he would talk to the individual. Other Republicans, most notably Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, offered a strong defense of Sessions, saying Trump shouldn’t base prosecutorial decisions on politics. Trump launched a fresh Twitter tirade Tuesday morning against Sessions, who was the first senator to endorse his candidacy. Ryan repeatedly said it is up to the president on personnel decisions.
Senator John McCain was greeted with applause when he entered the Senate chamber today to cast one of the final votes to approve the procedural motions for the new health care bill. McCain took a trip back home to Arizona recently, so that he could focus on his battle with brain cancer. McCain flew back to Washington D.C. to vote for a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and he cast the vote that tied the motion at 50-50. The motion cleared the Senate after Vice President Mike Pence cast a tiebreaker vote while he presided over the floor.
In this Honest Reporting video, the events that began with the deadly terror attack on Har Habayis on July 14, 2017 are explained, as is the placement of metal detectors on Har Habayis in response. The video does an exemplary job pointing out the absurd situation and the international community’s response. However, the issue as we are led to understand is not one of right and wrong, or the fact that the installation of metal detectors was a prudent and moderate response by Israel. Unfortunately, the Security Cabinet has already released a decision that it is willing to remove the metal detectors, which have been at the heart of the violence and international involvement since their placement – and this is for one reason only, it represents Israeli sovereignty ...
China on Tuesday denied its fighter jet pilots operated dangerously during an encounter with a U.S. surveillance plane in international airspace in which the American pilot took evasive action to avoid a possible collision. Spokesman Ren Guoqiang said in a statement on the defense ministry’s microblog that the performance of the pilots of the two J-10 fighters was “legal, necessary and professional.” Ren criticized frequent close-in surveillance runs by U.S. planes as raising the chance of accidents, saying such missions “threatened China’s national security, harmed China-U.S. sea-air military safety, endangered the safety of pilots from the two sides and were the root cause of China-U.S. sea-air unexpected incidents.” The U.S. should stop such &ldquo...
President Rivlin on Tuesday morning 2 Av commented on the safe return home of the Israeli Embassy staff in Jordan. “After a long and tense few days, I want to welcome back home the staff of our embassy in Jordan. We waited for you with concern, and followed closely your impressive conduct throughout the crisis, under the leadership of Ambassador Einat Schlein. “The State of Israel’s longstanding cooperation with the Hashemite Kingdom and King Abdullah, who knew to help wisely also now, played a significant part in the efforts to bring an end to the crisis, and we deeply appreciate this. “May the leaders and Government of Israel together with all the security services and our special envoy to Jordan, Shin Bet Director Nadav Argaman, be strengthened by th...
President Donald Trump surveyed the crowd of thousands of Boy Scouts at their summit Monday and assessed, “There’s a lot of love in this big, beautiful place. And a lot of love for our country.” He singled out for affection West Virginia, a state that gave him his largest margin of victory in November. “What we did, in all fairness, is an unbelievable tribute to you and all of the other millions and millions of people that came out and voted to make America great again,” he said as chants of “USA!” broke out among the Scouts, most of whom were too young to vote. It’s a message that only works in Trump-backing corners of America. As president, he’s been drawn again and again to those comfort zones, while largely avoiding states where v...
