President Donald Trump has spoken with advisers about firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, officials say, and launched a fresh Twitter tirade Tuesday against the man who was the first U.S. senator to endorse his candidacy. “Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes (where are E-mails & DNC server) & Intel leakers!” Trump tweeted. The president’s anger over Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the government’s investigation of Russian meddling in the U.S. election had burst into public view Monday when he referred to Sessions in a tweet as “beleaguered.” Privately, Trump has speculated aloud to allies in recent days about the potential consequences of firing Sessions, according to three ...
The Security Cabinet met on Monday, Rosh Chodosh Av, to discuss the situation on Har Habayis, focusing on the Waqf’s refusal to accept the metal detectors placed on the site by Israel. Following the meeting, the forum released the following statement indicating once again, Israel is backing down and agrees to remove the metal detectors. 1. The Security Cabinet accepted the recommendation of all of the security bodies to incorporate security measures based on advanced technologies (“smart checks”) and other measures instead of metal detectors in order to ensure the security of visitors and worshippers in the Old City and on Har Habayis. 2. Until the implementation of the plan, the Israel Police will reinforce its units and carry out additional actions as necessary ...
Strong congressional support from Republicans and Democrats for a new package of Russia sanctions effectively scuttles the potential for President Donald Trump to derail the legislation. The House is set to vote Tuesday on the penalties that aim to punish Moscow for its meddling in the presidential election and military aggression in Ukraine and Syria. The Senate is expected to act soon after that, which means the measure could be sent to Trump before the GOP-led Congress breaks for its August recess. The bill also would hit Iran and North Korea with fiscal and economic penalties. Both chambers are positioned to approve the legislation by veto-proof margins. With those numbers looming, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has delivered slightly mixed messages. She indicate...
NY State Assembly Member Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) refuses to let New York’s Nazi Jakiw Palij live happily ever after in Queens. Now, thanks to Hikind’s tireless efforts, U.S. Congressmen Chris Smith (R-New Jersey) and Lee Zeldin (R-New York) are both looking into what it will take to finally deport the Nazi war criminal living in Queens. “The involvement of Representatives Smith and Zeldin, who I know personally and have worked with before, should be applauded by everyone,” said Hikind, the son of Holocaust survivors who has been pursuing Palij for more than a decade. “Both of these outstanding elected officials have proven themselves principled men who care about justice and know how to get things done. “The rights and freedoms we enjoy in America shou...
Curtis Sliwa, the popular talk show host and founder of the Guardian Angel, was arrested on Tuesday morning outside Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. The incident was apparently filmed by someone working for Sliwa, and loaded to his YouTube Channel moments later. Sliwa was attempting to serve Mayor Bill de Blasio a lawsuit when he was arrested by NYPD officers. The NY Post cited a tweet by political activist Michael Faulkner on the arrest: “Curtis Sliwa was just arrested outside Gracie Mansion for serving Bill de Blasio with papers to disqualify him for WFP ballot line#yeswewill.”
Mahwah, NJ - More than 200 Mahwah residents packed a picnic pavilion on Monday night at a local township park to formulate a plan for dealing with components of an eruv that has sprung up in recent days in the northernmost reaches of Mahwah. As previously reported on VIN News (http://bit.ly/2eJKclZ), the South Monsey Eruv Fund installed white PVC piping on numerous telephone poles in the township to be used as part of an eruv.  The piping was put up with approval of the local utility company, but town officials ordered it removed on grounds that it violated a local ordinance that prohibits any kind of signage on utility poles. Residents who attended the meeting at Continental Soldier Field in Mahwah were encouraged to leave their names and contact information on signup sheets and to...

A U.S. Army soldier based in Hawaii pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of attempting to support the Islamic State group. Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang was arraigned in federal court in Honolulu after a grand jury indicted him last week on four counts of attempting to provide material support to the group. The indictment and an FBI affidavit filed previously allege that Kang met with undercover agents he believed were part of the Islamic State group. He allegedly provided them with classified military information, a drone, military equipment and training in combat fighting. Kang may suffer from service-related mental health issues that the government was aware of but neglected to treat, his defense attorney, Birney Bervar has said. Bervar is seeking a mental health evaluation for Kang, w...
President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner will return to Capitol Hill Tuesday for a second day of private meetings with congressional investigators, this time for a closed-door conversation with lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee. Kushner on Monday answered questions from staff on the Senate’s intelligence panel, acknowledging four meetings with Russians during and after Trump’s victorious White House bid and insisting he had “nothing to hide.” He emerged smiling to publicly declare, “All of my actions were proper.” A quiet insider who generally avoids the spotlight, Kushner is the first top Trump lieutenant to be quizzed by the congressional investigators probing Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential ele...
President Donald Trump urged Republicans to “step up to the plate” for Tuesday’s crucial Senate vote on their bill eviscerating much of the Obama health care law. The stage was set for high drama, with Sen. John McCain returning to the Capitol to cast his first vote since being diagnosed with brain cancer. No stranger to heroic episodes, the Navy pilot who persevered through five years of captivity during the Vietnam War announced through his office that he would be back in Washington for the critical roll call on beginning debate on the legislation. The 80-year-old has been at home in Arizona since he revealed last week that he’s undergoing treatment for brain cancer, but a statement said he “looks forward” to returning for work on health care and othe...
House Republican whips heard from a special caller at their meeting Monday night — Majority Whip Steve Scalise. The Louisiana Republican is recovering from a gunshot wound at a Washington hospital. He phoned in to thank everyone for their hard work and tell them he looked forward to working through his recovery. The congressman’s spokesman Chris Bond says Scalise is in good spirits. Scalise expressed his appreciation for the two U.S. Capitol Police officers who were injured but managed to kill the gunman. Scalise and four other people were injured June 14 when a man opened fire on a Republican baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. The 51-year-old congressman was struck in the hip and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs. He has undergon...
Fox News Channel on Monday clarified, but didn’t apologize for, a weekend segment that The New York Times said falsely accused the newspaper of revealing intelligence information that enabled Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to elude capture by U.S. forces two years ago. Times spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha said Fox was guilty of “sheer hypocrisy” because the network had also reported about a U.S. raid that netted valuable intelligence soon after it took place. The dispute between the two news outlets was magnified by White House attention. A “Fox & Friends” report Saturday was headlined, “NYT foils U.S. attempt to take out al-Baghdadi.” President Donald Trump was apparently watching, because less than a half hour later he tweeted t...
President Donald Trump’s pick to run the FBI represented New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for nearly a year before a mandatory retainer agreement was signed, according to records obtained by a New York City radio station. Christopher Wray began representing Christie in September 2014 during the George Washington Bridge lane-closing investigation, but a formal agreement wasn’t approved until August 2015, WNYC reported Monday. A spokesman for the state attorney general’s office said it had no comment. Wray didn’t immediately respond to a request seeking comment. Wray’s firm, Atlanta-based King & Spalding, has been paid $2.1 million since Christie hired him in 2014. Three former Christie aides were convicted or pleaded guilty in the...
A federal judge on Monday indefinitely stopped the deportation of more than 1,400 Iraqis who fear physical harm if kicked out of the U.S., the latest in a series of decisions in favor of the immigrants. The injunction by U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith in Detroit will allow the Iraqis, many of whom are Christian, to stay in the U.S. while they try to persuade immigration courts to overturn the deportations based on risks back in their native country. The 34-page order was released Monday just hours before an earlier ruling was set to expire. Roughly 230 people are in custody. The remaining 1,200 are not locked up but could be arrested at any time. “Each petitioner faces the risk of torture or death on the basis of residence in America and publicized criminal records. Many will ...
It reads like a page out of Chelm. Terrorists murder Israel police officers. Israel puts up metal detectors to ensure that people do not go up there with guns to shoot and murder people. The Vatican has metal detectors as does the White House and Westminster Abbey. The Palestinian Authority screams bloody murder – or rather, “How do you Israelis prevent some of our people from committing bloody murder if they want to?!!” And the world sides with those who do not want the metal detectors. Indeed, eventually the Israeli government capitulates and decides to use alternative technology instead of the metal detectors. Chelm. But our issue lies with halacha. Should the detectors remain in place? Should the government have capitulated? BACKGROUND Over fifty years ago, for ...
The driver who was stopped has 20 pervious offenses in which his license was revoked. Police report they are continuing operation with a focus against hooliganism among drivers, those who place others in danger. On Sunday night the eve of Rosh Chodesh Av, police on Route 60 near Beit Omar in the S. Hebron Hills area, ordered an Arab driver of a jeep to pull over for inspection. House Democrats on Monday blocked passage of a non-controversial intelligence policy bill, saying that Republicans were rushing to pass it without extensive debate. The vote was 241 to 163 against passing the intelligence authorization bill, which supports critical national security programs, including those addressing counterterrorism and cyberattacks. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she had no problem with the bill itself, but rather the expedited procedure for approving it. In a letter Pelosi wrote: “This is unacceptable when critical intelligence decisions are being made that impact America’s national security and while the House and Senate intelligence committees are leading investigations into Russia’s continued efforts to undermine our democracy.&...
A federal judge on Monday cleared the way for President Donald Trump’s commission on election fraud to resume collecting detailed voter roll information from the states. The commission asked states last month to provide publicly available data including registered voters’ names, birth dates and partial Social Security numbers, but it later told them to hold off until a judge ruled on a lawsuit filed by the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington. U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, in the District of Columbia, denied the advocacy group’s request to block the data collection in a ruling that commission vice chairman Kris Kobach called “a major victory for government accountability, transparency and the public’s right to know about th...
