There are flying cars and Concorde’s would-be supersonic successor, a company offering to deliver cargo to the Moon — for a mere $1.2 million per kilogram — and the latest in funky futuristic aviation ideas, both big and small. No doubt about it: the Paris Air Show is an aerospace geek’s paradise. But with everything from the smallest drones to the largest passenger jets on display, it’s tough to sift through it all. So here’s a guide to some of the cool things that caught our eye this week. ——— FLYING CARS Of the various car-type flying machines in development, the two-seat “Pegasus,” from French firm Vaylon, can at least boast that it has actually flown. The carbon-fiber four-wheeler drove out of Paris and the...
In order to strengthen Turkey as a leading Muslim factor in Jerusalem, Turkish foundations and organizations are pouring tens of millions of dollars into eastern Jerusalem and Har Habayis. Part of the money is Turkish government money, which finances the Tika organization. At the head of Tikka is Dr. Serdar Cam, a close associate of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former head of his office in the Turkish parliament, who has been inspired by his speeches against Israeli control of Jerusalem, which he views as “insult,” Yisrael Hayom reports. According to the investigation since 2004, the Tika organization has invested millions of dollars in 63 various projects in eastern Jerusalem. Turkey’s allies in the city are the head of the northern branch of the Islamic Move...
The family of an unarmed New York City man killed by a police chokehold said they were frustrated that federal authorities still haven’t decided whether to prosecute any of the officers involved in the death. The family of the slain man, Eric Garner, emerged from a private meeting Wednesday with Justice Department officials saying they had been told that the investigation was still active. “Once again we are going to be playing the waiting game,” Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, told reporters after the meeting at a Brooklyn hotel. “We shouldn’t have to wait like this. It is frustrating. Other cases have been solved that came after us and we are still waiting,” Carr said. Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, who also attended the meeting, said t...

Democrats on a House committee are pressuring the White House to release a wide array of documents about the security clearances granted to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top aide. In a letter Wednesday, 18 members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said they have “serious concerns” about how the White House is handling classified information and who is being allowed access to such sensitive material. The letter, citing press reports, singles out Kushner for failing to disclose numerous contacts with foreign officials on his security clearance questionnaire. It also questions why the White House allowed Flynn to have access to classified information after learning that h...
Tonight is the 28th of Sivan, the yahrtzeit of our beloved mother and wife, Zahava Bas Moshe Abba, a"h, who left us three years ago. For all of those who were close to her, or who were impacted by her, the void that has been left in our lives as a result of her loss is incalculable, and in many ways, it is still very difficult to believe that she is really not here with us. Her legacy of chesed has left a mark on people whose lives were touched by her worldwide. We still hear stories of people whose lives were changed by her, in ways that we were never aware of. In many ways, through the impact of all that she has done for all of us, she still lives on in a very real way. The family would like to let you know what is being done in her memory, so that you can participate in any way that yo...
President Donald Trump is weighing in on a New Jersey school district where yearbooks were altered to remove three students’ references to him. The Asbury Park Press reports Trump posted a letter to his Facebook page Monday, thanking Wall High School students Montana and Wyatt Dobrovich-Fago, who previously reported their entries were altered to remove references to Trump. The letter itself was written by Michael Glassner, the executive director of Trump’s campaign. He sent it to the siblings along with a care package of campaign memorabilia. Superintendent Cheryl Dyer says the alteration of Wyatt’s photo was unintentional, and that it’s unclear if Montana’s quotation of Trump was intentionally left out. Dyer says another student had his Trump T-shirt digi...
The Republican congressman shot last week at a baseball practice is making good progress and has been upgraded to fair condition. That’s the word from MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The hospital issued a statement on Wednesday saying Rep. Steve Scalise, 51, of Louisiana is “beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation.” The Louisiana Republican has undergone several surgeries since he was shot last week. Scalise and other congressional Republicans were practicing for their annual charity baseball game against Democrats when a gunman started shooting. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman. The Majority Whip was struck in the hip and the bullet shattered blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. ...
In an angry letter to the Health Ministry, the former Hadassah Ein Kerem pediatric oncologists announced that they are rejecting the possibility of arbitration of the burning issue because of what they call “one big spin. “In the wake of all these events, there is no point in continuing direct contacts – you reject the proposals that the doctors offer, do not promote proposals that the doctors agree to, you do not offer concrete proposals for a solution, and all our contacts misrepresent the media in one big spin,” the doctors complain. “There is nothing in these talks that can advance or contribute to any solution, so from now on any proposal for mediation or any other possible solution must be made under the auspices of the High Court of Ju...
Saudi King Salman named his 31-year-old son, Mohammed bin Salman, next in line to take over the oil-rich kingdom with a royal decree on Wednesday in a dramatic upending of the royal succession. Here’s a look at major royal members in the history of the ultraconservative Sunni kingdom that’s a longtime U.S. ally and top oil producer, and key figures in the latest reshuffle. KING ABDUL-AZIZ AL SAUD King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, backed by the British against the Ottomans during World War I, became king of Hejaz in 1926 and later changed the name of the kingdom to Saudi Arabia. The kingdom stretched across much of the Arabian Peninsula, ahead of oil being discovered there in 1938. The king, also known as Ibn Saud in the West, granted oil concession to American companies, launch...
A consumer watchdog group says those wildly popular fidget spinners aren’t as harmless as they might appear. Boston-based World Against Toys Causing Harm is scheduled to address spinners and other fad items when the nonprofit organization presents its annual list of unsafe summer playthings on Wednesday. W.A.T.C.H.’s list highlights potentially hazardous items that parents should avoid. Authorities in Germany said last week they plan to destroy tons of the tiny twirling gadgets that have been confiscated by customs agents. They said they tested the toys, which arrived from China, and found that bits could fall off and pose possible choking hazards for small children.

The Kremlin voiced displeasure Wednesday about new United States sanctions against Russia and called off much-anticipated talks with a senior U.S administration official in response. The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it had imposed sanctions on 38 Russian individuals and firms over Russian activities in Ukraine. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the penalties were designed to “maintain pressure on Russia to work toward a diplomatic solution.” President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Wednesday that the U.S. move wasn’t constructive and warned of possible retaliation. Later in the day, Russia’s deputy foreign minister said he had cancelled talks that were scheduled for Friday with the U.S. undersecretary of state. &l...

The FAA said Wednesday that the report was made around midnight as Delta Airlines Flight 2294 from Las Vegas was about 4 miles northwest of Farmingdale, New York. The Nassau County Police Department on Long Island says the laser may have come from the Plainview or Old Bethpage area. Delta spokeswoman Kate Modolo says the airline also is investigating.
President Donald Trump is expected to make an announcement in the coming days on whether any recordings exist of his private conversations with former FBI Director James Comey, potentially bringing to an end one of the central mysteries of the ongoing probe that has consumed his White House. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday that he expects an announcement “this week” on the possibility of tapes. The president fired Comey in May and then tweeted that the lawman, who was overseeing the investigation into possible contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russian officials, “better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press.” Trump and his aides have since then steadfastly refused to cla...

Jerusalem, Israel - June 21, 2017 - Day 2 of the Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society, held at the Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem, Israel, highlighted challenges and solutions for Israel’s excess regulation and bureaucracy. Eli Groner, Director-General of the Prime Minister’s Office, said the government is acting. In the last year, Groner said that 1 billion, 300 million shekels previously wasted on regulation have been saved.  Groner placed blame on the private industry for some of the country’s regulation challenges. He cited a recent case where IKEA is suing the government for not having strict enough fire regulations for sprinklers, ...
First comes the unscratchable itching, and the angry blossoming of hives. Then stomach cramping, and—for the unluckiest few—difficulty breathing, passing out, and even death. In the last decade and a half, thousands of previously protein-loving Americans have developed a dangerous allergy to meat. And they all have one thing in common: the lone star tick. Red meat, you might be surprised to know, isn’t totally sugar-free. It contains a few protein-linked saccharides, including one called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, or alpha-gal, for short. More and more people are learning this the hard way, when they suddenly develop a life-threatening allergy to that pesky sugar molecule after a tick bite. Yep, one bite from the lone star tick—which gets its n...
A sinister portrait of Russia’s cyberattacks on the U.S. emerged Wednesday as current and former U.S. officials told Congress Moscow stockpiled stolen information and selectively disseminated it during the 2016 presidential campaign to undermine the American political process. The Russians “used fake news and propaganda and they also used online amplifiers to spread the information to as many people as possible,” Bill Priestap, the FBI’s top counterintelligence official, told the Senate Intelligence committee. While he said the Russians had conducted covert operations targeting past American elections, the internet “has allowed Russia to do so much more” than before. But, he added, the “scale and aggressiveness” was different this time, wit...
