French President Emmanuel Macron says his now famous white-knuckle handshake showdown with U.S. counterpart Donald Trump was “a moment of truth” — designed to show that he’s no pushover. Macron told a Sunday newspaper in France that “my handshake with him, it wasn’t innocent.” Macron added: “One must show that you won’t make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but also not over-publicize things, either.” Macron’s office confirmed to The Associated Press the veracity of the president’s comments in Le Journal du Dimanche. At their first meeting, ahead of a NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday, the two men locked hands for so long that knuckles started turning white. The French leader held the shake for a few second...

The disclosures dogged the president during his first trip abroad since taking office and threaten to overwhelm and stall the agenda for his young administration. As he mulls outside reinforcements to his operation, Trump returned late Saturday from his nine-day journey to a White House seemingly ...

In the coming years, the Israeli military will begin using unmanned vehicles to secure the Jewish state’s border with the Gaza Strip, the IDF’s Hebrew website reported on Sunday. “The vehicle patrols the area, collects information and identifies irregularities while a female soldier drives it from a war room,” Captain Avidav Goldstein said. “This vehicle can replace the foot patrols carried out by soldiers next to the fence.” According to Goldstein, the IDF was the first army in the world to use such vehicles and they represented a “technological breakthrough on an international level.” The vehicles will soon be installed with weapons that can be operated from afar, the IDF report noted. They already are equipped with camera and louds...

Palestinian officials are frustrated with President Donald Trump’s pro-Israel positions, the Hebrew news site nrg reported on Sunday, citing a new document authored by a top Ramallah political figure. In the paper, which summarizes the diplomatic work the Palestinian Authority has done since Trump entered office earlier this year, Saeb Erekat — the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee and chief PA negotiator — wrote, “The Americans will vote against all plans and resolutions regarding Palestine at the [UN] Human Rights Council and UNESCO. Likewise, the American government will defend Israel at all international institutions and organizations, in accordance with President Trump’s declaration. Furthermore, the A...

Thousands of British Airways passengers are still facing long lines, confusion and canceled flights as the airline works to restore its computer systems after a global IT failure crippled its services. The airline said that it hoped to operate a “near normal schedule” at Gatwick and the “majority of services” from Heathrow on Sunday, a day after canceling all flights from both London airports. “Work continues to restore all of our IT systems but we expect some further disruption today,” BA said in a statement. BA canceled flights from Heathrow and Gatwick Saturday, upending the travel plans of tens of thousands of people on a busy U.K. holiday weekend. It blamed a power supply issue for the outage and said there was no sign it was under cyberattack. ...

A federal judge tossed a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton by the parents of two Americans killed at a diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, ruling Friday the former secretary of state did not defame them when disputing allegations that she had lied. “The untimely death of plaintiffs’ sons is tragic, and the Court does not mean to minimize the unspeakable loss that plaintiffs have suffered in any way,” U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington wrote in a 29-page opinion. The suit also alleged Clinton’s use of a private email server caused the death of their sons, Sean Smith and Tyrone Woods, because it exposed terrorists to sensitive information. They claimed Clinton lied when she allegedly told them it was a YouTube video that prompted the consulate ...
Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron showered high praise on President Trump’s “capacity to listen” after meeting the U.S. president at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy, The Associated Press reported Saturday. So how should we celebrate a Bas Mitzvah? The stores on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst and Lawrence may really like this one. But read on. The Gemara (Niddah 45b) tells us that a girl becomes an adult at the age of 12. This tradition was handed down to us by Moshe from Har Sinai as were all the other figures, weights, and amounts. A girl enters into adulthood a full year earlier than does a boy. The reason for this, as explained by the Gemara, is that Hashem placed more wisdom and understanding into women than into men. Rav Shlomo Volbe zt”l takes this a step further. When Dovid HaMlech ordained that people should recite 100 blessings a day, he did so because he detected a lacunae in Klal Yisroel’s fear of heaven. To increase that spirituality, Dovid HaMelech ordained that we ...

Prior to Shavuos in previous years, I published articles on the topics of producing and eating dairy bread, how to make kosher cheese, whether Shavuos is preceded by Parshas Bamidbar or Parshas Naso, and about the laws of making pareve foods. All of these articles can be accessed on RabbiKaganoff.com This year, I decided to distribute an article by my close friend, Rabbi Avraham Rosenthal, on the Ashkenazic custom of reciting Akdamus on Shavuos. A common minhag among Ashkenazim is to read the beautiful poem of Akdamus at the beginning of the kerias haTorah on Shavuos morning. This article provides some basic historical and halachic background to this magnificent work. The Author The name of the person who composed Akdamus can be found as an acronymic in the lines of the poem. The firs...
