Lachish district police used intelligence sources and other means to recover four Sifrei Torah that were stolen a month ago from an Ashkelon shul. The suspect in the case is a 26-year-old resident of the city who has been arraigned. Analyzing forensics from the scene of the stolen Sifrei Torah, and intelligence information, led police to the apprehension of the suspect. The thief also made off with kupot tzedaka and other shul property. Police arrived at the suspect’s home with a search warrant and they found four parchments from Sifrei Torah wrapped in sheets and hidden under beds.
As President Donald Trump marks 100 days in office, he is vowing to keep his campaign promise to build a wall along the border with Mexico. Despite widespread skepticism and Mexico’s refusal to pay for the wall, as Trump has demanded, the U.S. government has been soliciting bids and test sections could be built as soon as this summer. Physical barriers are as old as humanity and have proven to be effective over the centuries at protecting borders. But fences can also have unwanted consequences, like destroying city neighborhoods, harming the environment and preventing innocent victims from reaching safety. Here is a look at some of the world’s barriers. Some are rather simple, while others are massive enterprises that cost billions. Generally they have been paid for through ...

An Israeli Air Force (IAF) strike last month destroyed approximately 100 Syrian missiles, many of which were believed to be headed to the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah, a senior Israeli officer said Tuesday. While the existence of March’s Israeli strike was already known, multiple Israeli media outlets’ publication of the officer’s comments marked the first details to emerge about the strike’s impact on Syria. The officer did not elaborate on the type of missiles destroyed. The Israeli strike had prompted the Syrian regime to fire a missile on IAF planes, causing Israel to activate the Arrow long-range missile defense system to intercept a Syrian missile, marking the system’s first operational use in its 17 years of existence. The officer added ...
Israeli archaeologists announced Wednesday the discovery of a 1,500-year-old mother-of-pearl tablet etched with a menorah in the ancient town of Caesarea. According to Israel Antiques Authority archaeologist Peter Gendelman, the tablet, dating back to the late Roman-Byzantine period of the 4th or 5th centuries A.D., “points to clear Jewish presence at Caesarea during this period.” Archaeologists speculate that the pearl menorah tablet was likely part of a structure used to hold a Torah scroll. The slab was uncovered near the temple devoted to Augustus Caesar, constructed by King Herod in the 1st century B.C. The discovery was made in early April, a few days before Passover, and was publicized as part of a press conference Wednesday regarding a new $30 million renovation proj...
A Palestinian terrorist who murdered a British student in Jerusalem in mid-April will receive a stipend of approximately $1,000 per month from the Palestinian Authority (PA). The terrorist, 57-year-old Jamil Tamimi, murdered 21-year-old British woman Hannah Bladon, who was riding Jerusalem’s light rail, on the Christian holiday of Good Friday April 14. “According to PA law, everyone who is imprisoned for ‘resisting the occupation’ receives a PA salary,” said Itamar Marcus, founder and director of Palestinian Media Watch, the Daily Mail reported. “In PA practice, 100 percent of the suicide bombers, stabbers, shooters and car-rammers have been included in this category and do receive PA salaries,” he added. Israeli authorities have said Tami...

Baltimore, MD - Apr. 27, 2017 - You can use the IRS 'Where's my Refund' (https://www.irs.gov/refunds) tool to check the status of your refund. The 'Where's my Refund' tool is updated once daily, usually overnight. Your status is generally available within 24 hours upon the IRS receiving your e-filed return and 4 weeks after mailing your paper return. If you do owe money to the federal government or state government, your refund will be garnished, and held by the government to pay the outstanding debt. For example, the federal government will hold a 2016 refund and forward it to a state that you owe money to, even if you are on a payment plan with the state. Also, the debt does not need to be a debt for income taxes. It could be payroll taxes, sales taxes, or ...
President Donald Trump’s plan to overhaul the U.S. tax code leaves much of the heavy lifting to Congress, while ignoring years of hard work by the guy who will have to do a lot of that lifting: House Speaker Paul Ryan. The one-page proposal outlined by the Trump administration Wednesday has something for everyone — massive tax cuts for businesses and a bigger standard tax deduction for middle-income families, lower investment taxes for the wealthy, and an end to the federal estate tax for the superrich — like the president and his family. The changes to the tax code are the most concrete guidance so far on Trump’s vision for spurring job growth and fulfilling his promise to help workers who have been left behind by an increasingly globalized economy. “He ...
Two U.S. military service members were killed in action Wednesday night in an anti-ISIS operation in Achin District of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, according to Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis. Their identities, service, and unit affiliations are being withheld pending next of kin notification. This is the same district in Afghanistan where an American soldier was killed earlier this month and where the massive ordnance air blast (MOAB) bomb was dropped on April 14.
Jacques de Maio, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation to Israel and the disputed territories, asserted in a rare interview this week that Israel is not an “apartheid state.” The ICRC leader detailed the Palestinian Authority’s attempts at political manipulation, including accusations that Israel is an apartheid state that carries out “extrajudicial killings.” “There is no IDF order to shoot suspects to kill, as political officials tried to convince us,” de Maio told Yedioth Ahronoth. “The Red Cross was very familiar with the regime in South Africa during apartheid…there is no apartheid here [in Israel].” “There isn’t a regime here that is based on the superiority of one r...
Two groups have been connected to Holocaust denial literature and fliers calling for the murder of Jews found at five Australian universities in recent weeks, The Australian reported on Tuesday. A neo-Nazi group called Antipodean Resistance claimed it put up such fliers and swastikas at Melbourne’s La Trobe University and Sydney University, while similar posters at Melbourne, Monash and Australian National Universities referenced a supposed environmental group called Chemtrails Geelong, according to the report. “The perpetrators of this disgraceful racist propaganda should be prosecuted under the Commonwealth Criminal Code for inciting violence on the basis of race, and not for some lesser offense,&rd...
French police have arrested around a dozen people this week in connection with the terrorist attacks in Paris in January 2015 which saw 17 people murdered when Islamist gunmen attacked the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket over a three-day period. Those in custody are alleged to have supplied weapons to Amedy Coulibaly — the assailant who shot dead four Jews when he stormed the Hyper Cacher supermarket at Porte de Vincennes. They include a far-right activist and arms dealer, Claude Hermant, who has been linked in the past with a shadowy internal security unit run by the National Front party. Hermant is currently serving a prison sentence for a separate arms trafficking offense. Both Hermant, a former mercenary who fought in the ...
Britain’s Liberal Democrat Party has suspended one of its candidates in the forthcoming June 8 General Election over a series of virulently antisemitic posts on social media. Ashuk Ahmed had been due to challenge the incumbent Labour Member of Parliament, Gavin Shuker, in the Luton South constituency near London when his posts were exposed by the UK Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA). After party officials were confronted with the evidence by the Mail Online website, a spokesman confirmed: “You sent us the email with the screenshots at 11:55 and we suspended Mr. Ahmed at 11:56. Mr Ahmed’s utterances have no place in the party. We believe in a politics that is open, tolerant and united.” Ahmed’s social media posts pushed...
Syrian state media blamed Israel on Thursday for an early morning missile attack on a military installation near Damascus International Airport that shook the capital with the force of the blasts. Israeli Minister of Intelligence Yisrael Katz would not comment directly on the incident but said any similar strike would be in line with established policy to interrupt the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah from Iran and Syria. “It absolutely matches our declared policy, a policy that we also implement,” Katz told Israel’s Army Radio. Israel is widely believed to have carried out several airstrikes in recent years on advanced weapons systems in Syria — including Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles and Iranian-made missiles — as well as Hezbollah positions. It rar...
President Donald Trump said he has told the leaders of Mexico and Canada that he will not pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement at this time, but could still withdraw if he concludes a renegotiated pact is not “a fair deal for all.” Trump tweeted early Thursday that he has agreed to remain a partner in the much-discussed trade agreement in calls he received from Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The White House released a statement late Wednesday saying only that Trump had assured the two leaders in phone conversations that the U.S. would not withdraw from NAFTA at this time. In his Twitter post, Trump called America’s relationships with the two hemispheric neighbors “very good” and said the prospe...
