Baltimore, MD - Apr. 26, 2017 - Third grade students at Ohr Chadash were learning about environmental advocacy. In order to get the full experience of what it means to advocate for something, the students went to City Hall where they pitched their ideas to several council members, including Mr. Yitzy Schleifer. The students advocated for the Councilman to put recycling bins in all public areas, like parks. Students even drew up a prototype of a recycling bin they felt would be best. While visiting and advocating, the students learned how the judiciary system works and what the process would be going forward if their idea was to be moved ahead. Since the council members all voted "yes," the next step involved the DPCW (Department of Public City Works). Members of the department came to OCA ...
Time to send in the Feds? Mayor Catherine Pugh disclosed today that she’s been in talks with the FBI about ways to a stage a federal intervention to reduce violence in Baltimore, which is on pace to reach the highest homicide level in two decades. Pugh said she and Police Commissioner Kevin Davis recently met with the special agent in charge of the Baltimore FBI Field Office to discuss federal help, including implementing new crime-fighting technology and possibly assigning FBI agents to assist Baltimore police. “I am expecting some response in reference to some requests that we made. We should probably know by the end of next week about the additional help we are asking for,” she said at her weekly press availability. She declined to go into specifics except to say t...
The opening of the first span of the new Kosciuszko Bridge is just a few hours away. Governor Andrew Cuomo will hold a grand opening event at noon, followed by a bigger celebration with a light show at 7 p.m. Crews will move a concrete barrier into place to divert vehicles from the old bridge to the new span. The old bridge is set to be torn down this summer and a new span will be constructed in its place. That phase of construction is expected to be finished in 2020. When complete, one span will carry traffic into Brooklyn, and the other will be Queens-bound.   (Source: NY)
Deputy Defense Minister Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan dismisses claims by Bennett's opponents that he is not religious enough. Deputy Defense Minister Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan, in an interview with Arutz Sheva, rejected the claims of several candidates running against Education Minister Naftali Bennett in the primaries for the leadership of the Jewish Home party that they are more religious than the current party leadership. "Maybe the public does not know enough [about it], but once a month, the seven senior rabbis in the religious Zionist community convene for a few hours of discussion dealing with areas related to the Jewish Home Party," Ben-Dahan said. "Naftali has appeared before this forum several times so that he can come and say to the other candidates who claim that they are mor...
Thousands of PA Arab gathered in Ramallah last week calling to "liberate of Palestine from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea" and for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic Caliphate. The rally was held with the permission of the Palestinian Authority leadership – even as PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas prepares for his visit in Washington next week where he will tell US President Donald Trump that he is committted to a "comprehensive and just peace" with Israel. The PA's representative in Washington, Hossam Zamelt, said that Abbas will meet with Trump in the context of "his commitment to a just and comprehensive peace that achieves the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people." That's not the picture being painted back home in Ramallah, however. Muslim Arab ...

President Donald Trump is lashing out at a judge’s ruling blocking his attempt to strip funds from “sanctuary cities” that don’t cooperate with U.S. immigration authorities, calling it “ridiculous” and vowing to go to the U.S. Supreme Court. It was the third Trump executive order on immigration to be thwarted by the federal courts. Here is a look at Tuesday’s ruling and what lies ahead: ——— WHAT DID THE FEDERAL JUDGE SAY ABOUT THE SANCTUARY CITIES ORDER? U.S. District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco said the president has no authority to attach new conditions of his own to spending that was approved by Congress. The judge further ruled that Trump’s order threatened a wide swath of funding — not the relative...
A state official in Jerusalem attacked this afternoon the UN’s so-called educational organization UNESCO, in light of another anti-Israel resolution it is expected to pass next week. The resolution is expected to assert that Israel is not sovereign over Jerusalem, and to question Israel’s authority to carry out activity in the city. “The management committee of UNESCO refuses to stop the politicization which is eroding the status of the organization,” the state source said. According to the source, “In contrast to the recommendation of UNESCO’s Director General and the promises and declarations made by various leaders in the past year, UNESCO is coming back to its ritual of anti-Israel political decisions that protest any activity carried ou...
Two men were injured after an escalator malfunctioned at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. They were on the escalator around 7 a.m. when several of the stair treads buckled, and they sustained minor injuries. Recent Shin Bet (ISA) operations have uncovered several cases that underscore the continuing efforts by terrorist organizations to transfer funds and war materiel into Israeli territory by exploiting the humanitarian easements that the State of Israel provides to the PA (Palestinian Authority) population. Ez Aldin Darabiyeh, 22, a resident of Hebron/Yatir, was recently arrested at the Allenby Crossing while attempting to smuggle approximately JD 10,000 (Worth approximately NIS 51,400) in Hamas funds into Yehuda and Shomron for use in financing terrorist activity. Shin Bet officials continue working to thwart smuggling funds amid the realization this is a lifeline for terrorists operating within the boundaries of PA autonomous areas.
Internet companies are readying for a showdown with telecoms and a Republican-controlled government over a policy near and dear to their hearts: net neutrality. Net neutrality basically prevents broadband providers from playing favorites or steering users toward (or away from) particular internet sites. Under rules enacted during the Obama administration, the likes of Comcast and Verizon – which offer their own video services they’d very much like subscribers to use – can’t slow down Netflix, can’t block YouTube, and can’t charge Spotify extra to stream faster than Pandora. Broadband companies hate the net neutrality rules, and they have an ally in new Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai, who has repeatedly called the regulations a mist...
You’d think Twitter would be able to milk its status as President Donald Trump’s megaphone. But the company still faces stagnant user growth, has never made a profit and even reported a quarterly revenue decline Wednesday, a first since going public. Trump’s frequent tweets ricochet well beyond his 28 million Twitter followers. Anything he tweets can serve as fodder for social media, TV news shows and, often, late-night comedy. Analysts say Twitter’s user engagement — how often people respond, retweet or “like,” for instance — likely benefited from “political discourse” in the first quarter. The problem: The people already on Twitter may well be using it more, but America’s first true “Twitter President” hasn&r...
President Donald Trump’s pick to be the CIA’s top lawyer says it would take a change in U.S. law to restart the program that permitted harsh interrogation of suspected terrorists in detention. Courtney Simmons Elwood tells the Senate intelligence committee that’s the advice she’d give the president if the White House asked the CIA to bring back the so-called torture program. She also faced facing questions about surveillance programs, the use of contractors and committee’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. She’s pledged to give the committee all the materials it needs for that investigation — as consistent with the law. Elwood has won bipartisan support for her nomination and is expected to be confirmed as C...
For the suspects in custody for assaulting a chareidi soldier in Beit Shemesh things are more complicated than they first believed. It appears in this case, the soldier was not a soldier but an Israel Police undercover detective disguised as a soldier. Two detectives walked through the frum area in IDF uniform and were attacked. The suspects are being arraigned and will face criminal charges for their actions.
A major milestone will be reached by the NYPD on Thursday. For the first time, the department’s patrol officers will be outfitted with body cameras. Officers at the 34th precinct in Washington Heights will be the first to wear cameras. 20 precincts, with up to 1,200 officers, will get body cams by the end of this year. It’s hoped all 22,000 patrol officers will have cameras by the end of 2019.
A man shot and killed a Delaware state trooper outside a convenience store Wednesday and later barricaded himself inside his house, where he continued to fire shots at officers, police said. The trooper was shot multiple times and died at a hospital, state police Superintendent Col. Nathaniel McQueen said at a news conference. “This is a sad day for our state and for the Delaware State Police family,” McQueen said, with Gov. John Carney at his side. Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard, 32, was shot about 12:10 p.m. after he approached a vehicle in a convenience store parking lot. McQueen said the vehicle had two suspicious people inside. One man got out of the car and shot the trooper several times before running away, McQueen said. The other man was arrested at the scene, he said. Po...
The Trump administration told lawmakers Wednesday it will apply economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, as an extraordinary White House briefing served to tamp down talk of military action against an unpredictable and increasingly dangerous U.S. adversary. President Donald Trump welcomed Republican and Democratic senators before his secretary of state, defense secretary, top general and national intelligence director conducted a classified briefing. The same team also met with House members in the Capitol to outline the North’s escalating nuclear capabilities and U.S. response options to what they called an “urgent national security threat.” After weeks of unusually blunt military threats, the joint statement by the agen...
Holocaust survivor Miri Amir was reunited with Miroslawa Gruszczynska, the woman whose family hid her from the Nazis in Poland during World War II. The reunion took place on Tuesday, 29 Nissan 5777. Amir hadn’t seen Gruszczynska in nearly 30 years, since the Gruszczynska family was awarded the title “Righteous Among the Nations” by Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. The reunion took place in Krakow at the opening dinner for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) “From Holocaust to Independence” delegation to Poland and Israel. Dismissing concerns about ballooning federal deficits, President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed dramatic tax cuts for U.S. businesses and individuals — outlining an overhaul his administration promises will spur economic growth and simplify America’s tangle of tax code rules. His proposal, a one-page sketch short on detail, would reduce the top corporate tax rate by 20 percentage points and allow private business owners to claim the new lower rate for their take-home pay. It would whittle the number of tax brackets for individuals from seven to three, lower the top tax rate from 39.6 percent to 35 percent and double the standard amount taxpayers could deduct. It would eliminate the estate tax and reduce taxes on investments, typically paid by the rich. It would further re...
