Israel came to a standstill on Monday as people stopped in their tracks for a two-minute siren that wailed across the country in remembrance of the Holocaust’s 6 million Jewish victims. The ritual is the centerpiece of Israel’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day for those who were systematically killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II. Pedestrians stood in place, buses stopped on busy streets and cars pulled over on major highways — their drivers standing on the roads with their heads bowed. In homes and businesses, people stopped what they were doing to pay homage to the victims of the Nazi genocide, in which a third of world Jewry was annihilated. A wreath laying ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial followed, with Israeli leaders and...

By dropping charges against major arms targets, the administration infuriated Justice Department officials — and undermined its own counterproliferation task forces. When President Barack Obama announced the “one-time gesture” of releasing Iranian-born prisoners who “were not charged with terrorism or any violent offenses” last year, his administration presented the move as a modest trade-off for the greater good of the Iran nuclear agreement and Tehran’s pledge to free five Americans. “Iran had a significantly higher number of individuals, of course, at the beginning of this negotiation that they would have liked to have seen released,” one senior Obama administration official told reporters in a background briefing arranged by the White H...

Yemeni tribal and security officials say a suspected U.S. airstrike has killed three al-Qaida operatives on Yemen’s southern coast. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, say the operatives killed in Shabwa province on Sunday were driving a car when an unmanned aircraft targeted their vehicle. Their bodies have not yet been identified. The Israeli military launched an attack on a military base belonging to pro-regime forces in Syria Sunday, according to reports. According to a statement issued by the National Defense Forces, which supports President Bashar al-Assad, three militants were killed and two were wounded in an alleged Israeli strike on the Naba Fawar base near Quneitra. Pro-regime radio reported that loud explosions were heard at the base at around 5 a.m. Sunday. Following the explosions, it was determined that a cache of ammunitions had detonated at the base, leading to confusion regarding whether or not Israel was responsible for the incident. The IDF has refused to comment on Sunday’s purported strike, which occurred following several confirmed Israeli strikes in Syria in response to projectiles tha...
NEW YORK (JTA) – President Donald Trump paid extended tribute to the memory of the Holocaust and to Israel in a speech to the World Jewish Congress. Given via prerecorded video at the opening dinner of the WJC’s Plenary Assembly in New York City Sunday night, Trump’s remarks honed close to Jewish communal talking points. The speech marked an evolution in Trump’s rhetoric from just three months ago, when his administration’s remembrance of the Holocaust left out mention of Jews, and when he appeared reluctant at first to condemn anti-Semitism. But Sunday, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Trump invoked the memory of the genocide’s six million Jewish victims, praised Israel as a “great nation” and vowed to fight anti-Semitism...
President Donald Trump heads into one of his most challenging weeks, juggling a renewed health care push and a looming budget deadline, and readying for a potential showdown with Democrats over paying for a border wall. The symbolic 100-day mark for the administration is Saturday — the same day government could shut down without a budget deal. Trump has announced a rally in Pennsylvania that day. Aides stressed on Sunday talk shows that funding a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border and a vote on an effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s health care law were priorities. But they also expressed optimism that a shutdown could be avoided. “I don’t think anyone foresees or expects or would want a shutdown,” said budget director Mick Mulvaney on &ld...
Beginning on July 5, 2017, unarmed IDF soldiers will be required to carry pepper spray in line with new regulations for both male and female soldiers. Regarding officers; the new regulation applies to lieutenants and captains only, and not more senior officers. The distribution of pepper spray began in January 2017, with each new recruit receiving one at the time of induction. The various units will distribute the pepper spray to the forces in the field no later than July 1, 2017. Officials feel this will provide soldiers a self-defense tool in the event they are not carrying a weapon.
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman issued a decree late Saturday naming one of his sons, an air force pilot who has taken part in coalition strikes against the Islamic State group, as the kingdom’s new ambassador to the U.S. The appointment of Prince Khaled bin Salman to Washington signals the kingdom’s eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties under President Donald Trump. As the king’s son, the prince has a direct line to the Saudi monarch. Saudi Arabia is the world’s third largest defense spender. Prince Khaled’s appointment positions him as an influential broker in deals with U.S. manufacturers. Saudi-U.S. relations had cooled under the Obama administration after Washington pursued a nuclear accord with Shiite-ruled Iran that the Sunni-ruled kingdom strongly...

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is calling on the PA (Palestinian Authority) to stop paying salaries to terrorists and their families as a condition to the resumption of diplomatic talks. At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, 27 Nissan, the prime minister addressed a number of issues before the media including the money paid to terrorists by the PA. “Over the weekend I made it clear that the Palestinian Authority needs to stop financing the terrorists that sit in prison and the families of the terrorists who were killed while committing their crimes. This is a simple and clear test of the Palestinians’ desire for peace. One cannot be for peace with Israel and at the same time extol and finance the murderers of Israelis and of other innocents. “Regardi...

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday visited Djibouti to bolster ties with the tiny and impoverished African country that is home to an important base for U.S. counterterrorism forces, including drones. Mattis, the first Trump administration official to visit Djibouti, planned to meet with President Ismail Omar Guelleh and greet U.S. and French troops. He was accompanied by Marine Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, head of U.S. Africa Command. The U.S. operates drone aircraft from Djibouti for surveillance and combat missions against al-Qaida-affiliated extremists in Somalia and elsewhere in the region.
