Baltimore, MD - Mar. 29, 2017 - On the past two Sundays, March 19 and 26, the children in Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchok/Torah Institute’s four Pre1A classes celebrated the momentous occasion of receiving their first siddurim! In honor of the occasion, each class put on a siddur play that highlighted the significance of tefillah. Proud parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and siblings watched the delightful songs and performances. Each of the celebrations was addressed by Rabbi Shimon Hirsch or Rabbi Nosson Adlin, who shared divrei bracha with the boys and attendees, and praised the Moros for their dedication to the chinuch of the talmidim. Each boy was then called up individually, and received his own siddur, to the encouraging sound of applause. The talmidim were clearly thr...

Be'er Sheva rabbis invalidate marriage to erase 'mamzer' status. The Be'er Sheva Rabbinical Court published a ruling that a person previously considered to be a mamzer was "permitted to marry an Israelite," which is the official way of saying he is, in fact, not a mamzer.A mamzer is the offspring from a prohibited relationship, either incest or adultery, who is barred from marrying most other Jews. A.'s grandmother married sixty years ago in [the former USSR state of] Georgia, separating from her husband a few years later. Forty years ago, she immigrated to Israel and was listed as a widow, after she said her husband had died. She then met another man and got pregnant with him - but found out towards the end of her pregnancy that her first husband was still al...
WHO warns low immunization rates leading to measles outbreaks, asks public to get immunized. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned recently of a measles outbreak sweeping across Europe, in places where immunization rates have plummeted. Recently, over 500 cases of measles have been reported in European countries. Measles is a highly contagious disease for which a cure has not been developed. It is claimed, however, that it can be prevented by two doses of the MMR vaccine. In most developed countries, the "herd immunity" is said to be high enough to prevent outbreaks. However, there are still fourteen areas in which vaccination rates fall below the recommended 95%, allegedly placing the local population at risk. Out of 559 measles cases reported in January, 474 occurred in seven...
Conservative Heritage Foundation releases report recommending Trump admin 'move embassy to Jerusalem, correct historic anomaly.' Weeks after President Ronald Reagan's first election victory, the U.S. was engulfed in problems and the new President was confronting challenges unparalleled in nearly a half-century. At that time, the prominent conservative Heritage Foundation produced a detailed road map designed to help the fledgling administration steer the nation into a sound future, guided by conservative principles, called Mandate for Leadership. By the end of President Reagan's first year in office, nearly two-thirds of Mandate's more than 2,000 specific recommendations had been or were being transformed into policy. Since then, Heritage ha...
Half of the 78 families settle in Israel's center, north, four immigrants are Holocaust survivors. 230 Ukranian immigrants landed in Israel's Ben Gurion Airport on Tuesday, after arriving via a flight arranged by the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews and headed by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein. The immigrants received a warm greeting from Immigration and Absorption Minister Sofa Landver (Yisrael Beytenu). Of the 78 families, most will settle in the north and center of Israel. Four of the immigrants are Holocaust survivors, and over 40 more are children. Some of these immigrants come from war-torn areas of the Ukraine, after having lived several years as a refugee. Alexei and Irena L. arrived in Israel with their daughter from Dnepropetrovsk. "Life in the Ukraine ...
UTJ MK slams haredi extremists for comparing government to Hitler, says haredi parties joining coalition with Yesh Atid not impossible. MK Menachem-Eliezer Moses (UTJ) slammed the members of the extremist haredi group the Jerusalem Faction Wednesday for the protest rally which was held in Jerusalem Tuesday night. He said that he heard protesters chanting: "We overcame Hitler and the Inquisition. We will overcome you as well." "Do not repeat it, I cannot stand to hear it, just as I cannot stand to see the burning garbage cans at 2-3 in the morning," Moses said in an interview with Radio South. "The haredi mainstream hears the calls of the gedolei haTorah (giants of Torah), and that is what obligates them." "Of course, if you see in the pictures, you see, unfortunately, the...
Bank of Israel presents annual report, President Rivlin says Israel's economy is good, but Israel must 'monitor economic processes closely.' The Bank of Israel Annual Report for 2016 will be published on Wednesday, after it is presented by the Governor to President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon (Kulanu). According to the report, Israel's economy is growing, employment rose by 2.6%, and its unemployment rate is low, providing a stable foundation for economical reforms which will allow continued growth to all sectors of Israeli society, and especially the weaker sectors which the Knesset is trying to strengthen. The report also said Israel's real estate market is dealing well with the challenges, and the cons...
Head of Tzohar rabbinic movement questions why call to reform kashrut supervision called a 'disaster.' Rabbi David Stav, the head of the Tzohar Rabbinic Organization, explained to Arutz Sheva finds it difficult to understand why the organization's desire to privatize the kashrut market under the Chief Rabbinate is problematic. He wondered why Tzohar receives criticism. "I respect every rabbi in Israel and every talmid hacham (Torah scholar), but I would like to [see] matters put in order. Where were all of these rabbis, when we know that for decades there were hundreds of places which were under the supervision of the rabbinate where people ate nonkosher food?" "But when someone wants to streamline and improve the system, under the supervision of the Chief R...
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez has launched a major overhaul of the party's organization, which has been stung by recent crises — and the DNC has requested resignation letters from all current staffers. Party staff routinely see major turnover with a new boss and they had been alerted to expect such a move. However, the mass resignation letters will give Perez a chance to completely remake the DNC's headquarters from scratch. Staffing had already reached unusual lows following a round of post-election layoffs in December. Immediately after Perez's selection as party chairman in late February, an adviser to outgoing DNC Interim Chair Donna Brazile, Leah Daughtry, asked every employee to submit a letter of resignation dated April 15, according to mult...
A renowned American-Israel historian told The Algemeiner on Tuesday that the vote earlier this month by members of a US academic society to remove the term “non-political” from its bylaws indicates that it is preparing to pass a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) resolution. Martin Kramer, founding president of Jerusalem’s Shalem College and author most recently of The War on Error: Israel, Islam, and the Middle East, said that the March 17 Middle Eastern Studies Association (MESA) vote  — which garnered 81% approval — was an obvious prelude to “pushing MESA into an academic boycott of Israel.” Kramer noted that though MESA “avoided mention” of BDS explicitly, in a Feb. 2 let...
A judge says he’ll look into what roles ex-New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and a former U.S. attorney general have in the defense of a Turkish businessman charged with helping Iran evade U.S. sanctions. Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman issued an order Tuesday asking lawyers to explain how the roles of Giuliani and former Attorney General Michael Mukasey might differ from those of other defense attorneys. Prosecutors have urged Berman to ensure there are no conflicts of interest if Giuliani and Mukasey join the defense of Reza Zarrab, who has pleaded not guilty. He was arrested in Miami in March 2016. Prosecutors say law firms employing Giuliani and Mukasey have represented bank victims in the case. They also say Giuliani and Mukasey are involved in efforts to resolve t...
“If someone says Israel is an apartheid country, they don’t know what apartheid means,” an Ethiopian-Israeli activist told The Algemeiner on Monday. “For example, an apartheid state does not appoint two Ethiopian-Israeli women to become judges,” Fentahun Assefa-Dawit — the executive director of the Tebeka legal aid group — noted, referring to Adenko Sebhat-Haimovich and Esther Tapeta Gardi. In an interview on the sidelines of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee’s annual policy conference in Washington, DC, Assefa-Dawit — whose NGO’s mission is to promote justice and equality for Ethiopian-Israelis – stated, “Like AIPAC strengthens Israel from the outside, we’re doing it from t...
Two former aides to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday for their roles in the 2013 George Washington Bridge lane-closing scandal. Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni were convicted last November on counts including wire fraud, conspiracy and misusing the bridge for improper purposes. The government’s star witness, David Wildstein, testified that he and the co-defendants plotted to cause gridlock to retaliate against the Democratic mayor of nearby Fort Lee for not endorsing the Republican Christie’s re-election. Baroni and Kelly face 37 to 46 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines, although both have filed briefs arguing that they should receive some combination of probation, home confinement and community service. Prosecutors urge...
The United Kingdom filed for divorce from the European Union on Wednesday, overturning four decades of integration with its neighbors, demolishing the notion that EU expansion is inevitable and shaking the foundations of a bloc that is facing challenges to its identity and its place in the world. Britain’s top envoy to the EU, Tim Barrow, hand-delivered a letter to European Council President Donald Tusk formally triggering a two-year countdown to the final split. “Today the government acts on the democratic will of the British people.” Prime Minister Theresa May told lawmakers in the House of Commons, adding, “This is an historic moment from which there can be no turning back.” Tusk tweeted that “after nine months the UK has delivered,” followed...

A New Jersey man wanted only one thing for his 100th birthday: to return to his old job. There was a birthday cake and a standing ovation before Hansen got back to work. CEO Fred Hutchinson agreed to pay him $1 and organized a complete day of assignments. “He took off about 15 minutes after we signed that agreement to get to work,” Hutchinson told WCAU-TV. Hansen, of Haddon Township, retired at the age of 97 after working 32 years for the company. “I hate being retired,” he said. Hansen went from job to job. His former co-workers wished him a happy birthday throughout the day. Carl Canfield, the man Hanse...
