Republican White House candidate Donald Trump stole the social media spotlight during Monday night's U.S. presidential debate on at least one count - what Twitter users branded his #Trumpsniffle. The wealthy businessman sniffed repeatedly as he faced off against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in their first debate, giving rise to the hashtag and a surge of interest on social media what might be causing his nose to run. Parody accounts, Donald's Sinuses (@TrumpsSinuses) and Trump sniff (@TrumpSniff), gained a large following. Trump, 70, told Fox News on Tuesday morning he did not have a cold. "No, no sniffles, no," he said. "No cold." He complained he had a faulty microphone and joked that maybe it was picking up breathing. Several tweeters seized on the sniff...
Hillary Clinton won the first presidential debate last night, according to a wide-variety of polls taken immediately afterward. Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight has a good breakdown of these instant polls. First, there’s a CNN poll, which has 62% of voters saying Clinton won versus 27% saying Trump. Public Policy Polling might have a more reliable result, with 52% of voters saying Clinton versus 40% saying Trump. Even a Breitbart poll had Clinton winning, though to significantly smaller numbers, 48% to 43%. There were other signs that Clinton won as well, according to Josh Barro at Business Insider. Betting markets increased her odds of winning from 69% before the debate to 73% afterward. CBS and CNN focus groups of undecided voters both indicated she won. Perhaps most intere...

BERLIN (AP) -- Two homemade explosive devices were set off outside a mosque and a conference center in the eastern German city of Dresden, police said Tuesday. Nobody was hurt. Dresden police said in a statement that there was no immediate report on the extent of damage from the explosions late Monday. "Even though we do not have a letter of confession, we must assume there's a xenophobic background," Police President Horst Kretschmar said. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere called the attacks "outrageous" and condemned them sharply. "Aggression against people who are practicing Islam is increasing in Germany," he said. "Fortunately, people didn't get hurt, but we don't want these things to happen in Germany." Police said they found pieces of the...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Monument is closing indefinitely because of ongoing problems with its elevator, the latest in a series of woes for one of the city's most enduring tourist attractions. The National Park Service announced Monday that the monument, which draws 600,000 visitors a year, will remain closed until its elevator control system can be modernized, a process expected to take up to nine months once work begins. A start date for the $3 million project has not been determined. The lone elevator carrying visitors to the top of the 555-foot obelisk has broken down frequently over the past two years, roughly since the monument reopened after being damaged in an earthquake. Park service officials have said they don't believe the 2011 earthquake ...

British couple living Cyprus make horrifying discovery, rush to Israel to save 3-week old baby. A routine check-up for their three-week old baby turned into every parent’s worst nightmare for a British couple living in Cyprus this weekend. When their daughter, Elsa Rose, was brought in to be weighed last Friday afternoon, a doctor noticed the baby’s lips had turned slightly blue. When he checked her heart beat, he heard what seemed to be a heart murmur. The doctor scheduled an appointment with a cardiologist that evening, who stunned the girl’s parents with a horrifying prognosis. “We took Elsa in at 6:30,” the girl’s mother wrote on Babycentre.co.uk, “and he performed an ultra-sound on her heart. We were then given the devastating news ...
(AFP). German data protection authorities on Tuesday said they had blocked Facebook from collecting subscriber data from its subsidiary WhatsApp, citing privacy concerns. Facebook and WhatsApp promised in the wake of the Silicon Valley giant’s 2014 acquisition of the messaging app that they would not share data, Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Johannes Caspar said in a statement. He added that Facebook would be required to delete any data already received from WhatsApp in Germany. “It has to be (the users’) decision whether they want to connect their account with Facebook,” Caspar said. “Facebook has to ask for their permission in advance.” WhatsApp announced in August that it would begin sharing dat...

New data show that murders in the United States rose 10.8 percent in the last year, following a two-decade decline. The FBI said the rise was the biggest single-year increase since 1971. The number of murders for 2015—15,696—was about the same total as in 2009. The total is still half what it was in 1991. “You lost 50 lb. You gained back a couple. You’re not fat,” said Jeffrey Butts, the director of the Research & Evaluation Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at your behavior, because the trend is not good.” Select cities showed their own trends. New York City saw 352 murders last year, compared to 2,000 per year in the early 1990s. Los Angeles has seen fewer than 300 mur...
Yerushalayim mayor Nir Barkat met rabbonim and politicians of the chareidi Degel Hatorah party who felt that he was antagonistic to their needs and promised to upgrade chareidi schools as part of a general plan to enhance the city’s schools. Looking for a fun event to have at your company this year? How about offering your employees a chance to bring their parents to work. That’s what Amazon.com recently did. And, as reported by a local TV station, everyone seemed to have a blast. Millennials – defined as those between the ages of 18 and 34 – now make up more than half of the U.S. workforce. And as tough as they’d like us to think they are we all know they’re still young at heart. I always hear of the challenges faced by small businesses looking to attract and maintain good people from this generation. So here’s one good idea: what could make an employee more appreciative of where she works than by impressing her parents? In a twist of the decades-old “bring your son/daughte...
Expands Access to Services to Underserved Communities Recently, Mrs. Leah Steinberg, Agudath Israel's Special Needs Advocate and Director of Project LEARN, proposed changes in inter-agency cooperation policy between the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and New York State's Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). As a member of New York State's Developmental Disabilities Advisory Council (DDAC) of the OPWDD, Mrs. Steinberg strongly advised that the yearly communication/forums from OPWDD includ...
