Philadelphia - Democrats who gleefully jeered Republican divisions last week awoke to a political mess of their own making Monday as party unity behind Hillary Clinton proved much harder to secure. Gathering for their convention in Philadelphia, Democrats struggled to shake lingering bitterness among supporters of defeated rival Bernie Sanders and dealt with the aftermath of a leadership shakeup at the top. The party announced Monday it would kick off its four-day spectacle with speeches from some of its most popular figures. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a progressive favorite, would deliver the convention keynote. Sanders and first lady Michelle Obama will also take the stage. The kickoff lineup had long been intended to appeal to the party’s restive liberal wing,...
Philadelphia - Outgoing Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is being heckled at a breakfast of Florida delegates, with opponents shouting, “Shame!” The Florida congresswoman announced Sunday that she would resign as the party’s chair at the end of this week’s Democratic National Convention. Wasserman Schultz is telling the crowd during a raucous scene that “we have to make sure that we move together in a unified way.” But supporters of Bernie Sanders shouted at her during her brief remarks to the breakfast. Her ouster came after a firestorm over hacked emails that suggested the DNC favored Hillary Clinton in the presidential primaries against Bernie Sanders.
New York - The Palestinian Authority has called on the United Nations Security Council to act against Israeli settlement building, in the wake of the Jerusalem Municipality’s decision to advance 770 new Jewish homes in its Gilo neighborhood, which is located over the Green Line. “This is yet another opportunity for the international community to show its real commitment for the two-state solution and to take all needed action in order to have Israel fully cease settlement construction in the occupied state of Palestine,” PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat said. “We have asked the State of Egypt and the leaders of Arab countries during our recent visit to call for an urgent meeting of the Arab Quartet in order to submit a draft resolution to the United Nati...
New York - Verizon is buying Yahoo for $4.83 billion, marking the end of an era for a company that once defined the internet. It is the second time in as many years that Verizon has snapped up the remnants of a fallen internet star as it broadens its digital reach. The nation’s largest wireless carrier paid $4.4 billion for AOL last year. Yahoo will be rolled into Verizon’s AOL operations and CEO Marissa Meyers could be working again with AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, who worked with Mayer at Google for years and tried unsuccessfully to convince her to combine the two companies when they both remained independent. Though many expected the sale of Yahoo to spell the end of Mayer’s reign, a Tumblr post from Mayer moments after the deal was announced read, “For me ...

Israel - France will never deny the “existing, true” Jewish historical rights to Jerusalem, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls pledged. Valls made the statement in a letter penned to Shmuel Rabinovitch, the Rabbi of the Western Wall and the Holy Sites of Israel. The French diplomat’s remarks came in light of Rabinovitch’s protest over Paris’s backing of a recently adopted UNESCO resolution that ignored Jewish ties to the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. “Unfortunate and clumsy formulations...read more at VIN
Virginia Senator and former Governor Tim Kaine has been the Democratic Party’s presumptive Vice Presidential nominee for just three days, yet the pick has already drawn fire from the pro-Israel community due in part to Kaine’s robust support for the Iran nuclear deal, his boycott of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress in 2015, and his ties to a left-wing NGO. Now, a controversial appointment made during his tenure as Governor of Virginia has raised new questions about Kaine’s bona fides as a self-described “strongly pro-Israel Democrat”. In 2007, then-Governor Kaine appointed Esam Omeish, a Libyan-born physician and then-president of the Muslim American Society, to Virginia’s Immigration Commission. This came ...

Michael Flynn accused presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton of corruption in cahoots with Jewish people on Twitter on Sunday, in a message he promptly deleted. The former general– who GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump considered for his running mate, and who last week delivered a primetime speech to the Republican National Convention– was responding to accusations by the Clinton campaign that Russia was behind a hack of the Democratic National Committee, and a subsequent leak of e-mails, in order to...read more at VIN

Sources in the Jerusalem municipality indicate that current political climate in US makes it perfect time to build in Jerusalem. The Regional Council of Jerusalem is expected to approve tomorrow (Tuesday) the building of housing units across the so-called "green-line" after a hiatus of several months, in spite of international pressure against doing so, reports Channel 2 news. The plan includes 57 new housing units in the Ramot neighborhood of Jerusalem, an area in which Israeli building faces opposition by the international community. Although the plan had been approved a year ago by the Municipal Council, plans were frozen up until a week ago. Now the plans are being propelled forward with the advent of approval from the Regional Council, which has been resistant to approval o...

Berlin - German police arrested a 16-year-old Afghan youth on Sunday on suspicion of a connection to the killing of nine people by an 18-year-old gunman in Munich, authorities said. The youth was under investigation for possibly having failed to report the plans of the gunman, who later shot himself, a police statement said. “There is a suspicion that the 16-year-old is a possible tacit accomplice to (Friday’s) attack,” it said. Police earlier said the gunman was a deranged Iranian-German who was fixated with mass killings but not inspired by Islamist militancy. The Afghan youth was questioned after he contacted police following the shooting on Friday, the statement said. Investigators later uncovered contradictions in his statements, it said, without providin...
