Family sues Exxelia Technologies for selling drone missile component to Israel. Plaintiffs say Israel killed three children with it in 2014. A Palestinian family is suing the French company Exxelia Technologies for selling weapons parts to Israel. Ynet reports that the Shuheibar family from Gaza City filed the suit through the Ancile-avocats law firm and with help from the Christian organization ACAT. The lawyers claim that Exxelia is complicit in war crimes and manslaughter. According to the suit, an Israeli missile hit the family home during 2014's Operation Protective Edge. Five children were on the roof at the time; three were killed and two others wounded. The family insists that there was no military target present and therefore strik...

Former CIA Director David Petraeus hinted on Wednesday that he will be part of a push to grow Israel’s startup sector and move Israeli companies into the US market, Jewish Insider reported. Petraeus indicated this during a panel discussion hosted by the Paul E. Singer Foundation and Start-Up Nation Central — which took place on the sidelines of the Ideas Festival in Aspen — that was moderated by Dan Senor, co-author of the best-selling book, Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle. According to Petraeus, the book Start-up Nation “should be rewritten” to reflect Israel’s thriving and influential startup ecosystem. “It should be titled ‘Scale-Up Nation’ and if I and a bunch of others have a...
An educator at a New York City school was portrayed disparagingly in a mural commissioned by his boss, whom he had sued for antisemitic harassment, the UK’s Daily Mail reported. Assistant principal David Possner, of Junior High School 226 in Queens, is depicted in the wall artwork as a shrunken man on the side of a stage, being pointed at by another figure. In the center of the stage is principal Rushell White, likened to a multi-armed Hindu goddess, standing beside four other figures, who, Possner said, represent the school’s other assistant principals. Above them hangs a banner that features the biblical quote, “Whom much is given much is required,” which White reads every morning ...

Some protesters trampled the Israeli flag and also chanted “down with the USA.” Iranian state media reports that similar rallies are taking place across the country. Iran does not recognize Israel and has marked al-Quds day since the start of its 1979 Islamic revolution. Al-Quds is a historic Arabic name for Jerusalem, and Iran says the day is an occasion to express support for the Palestinians and emphasize the importance of Jerusalem ...

Watch: Mother Rena Ariel cries for her daughter, Hallel Ariel, murdered in her sleep in Kiryat Arba. This morning, she was sleeping in bed. Tonight, she sleeps in the earth. Thousands escorted Hallel Ariel to her final resting place. Just 13 years-old, she was stabbed more than a dozen times this morning by a 17 year-old terrorist, as she lay sleeping. Hallel's mother kisses her bier. "You didn't want anything." she chokes into the mic. "Thirteen and a half years ago, after many challenges and attempts, I merited to give birth to you. Immediately there was light in my life. You had a crown of light, Hallel. You made me a mother." The crowd behind her starts to cry softly."Matriarch Sarah, hug her please, because I can no longer," she wails, begs, pleads with Heaven. ...
While millions of children got out of bed on the morning of June 30, 2016, excited for summer vacation, one child did not. A young Israeli girl, 13-year-old Hallel Yaffe Ariel, was brutally murdered in her own bed by a 17-year-old Palestinian terrorist. He broke into her house and stabbed her to death. Another life lost to senseless violence. Another poor soul taken too early from this world. But few Muslims in this world will be mourning her death, because Hallel was an Israeli Jew. I am a Muslim, and I know that when it comes to Palestinian terrorism, too many Muslims are hypocrites. I have seen firsthand the casual, destructive anti-Semitism that plagues the Muslim community. I have heard it from the mouths of our religious leaders, from our politicians, and even from our o...

In this week’s Parsha, Sh’lach, we see how our people failed in their relationship to the Land of Israel. HaShem was about to take us into the Land of Israel. There were no more prerequisite achievements that had to be accomplished. We already received the Torah, we already constructed the Mishkon we were already in formation – we were ready to enter. Just before that final approach, our people demanded from Moshe that we should spy out the Land of Israel and only after that should we enter the Land. Moshe conceded to their request and 12 spies were sent. Upon their return, ten of those spies inspired fear in the hearts of the people that HaShem would not be able to conquer the inhabitants of the Land for they were too mighty and the people cried bitter tears for their fa...
Albany, NY - A Democratic political operative pleaded not guilty Thursday to bribery and other charges filed in a New York corruption probe that led to the resignation of a state Supreme Court judge a day earlier. G. Steven Pigeon was arraigned on a nine-count indictment that accuses him of offering favors and gifts worth more than $10,000 to Judge John Michalek, who pleaded guilty Wednesday to accepting bribes from 2012 to 2015 and is to be sentenced Sept. 21. “Steve Pigeon engaged in a multiyear scheme to bribe a sitting state judge in an effort to win access and favors for his clients and associates,” said a statement from Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Pigeon, 55, was released on bond after surrendering his passport. His attorney said Pigeon declined a plea...
Theresa May has launched her bid for the Conservative leadership, pledging that “Brexit means Brexit” and that there would be no general election before 2020. The home secretary, who campaigned to remain in the EU, positioned herself as the candidate of stability and experience. Asked for her pitch, she said: “I’m Theresa May and I’m the best person to be prime minister.” The event was electrified by Michael Gove’s surprise announcement just minutes before she stood up that he would run for the leadership because, he said, Boris Johnson was not a suitable candidate. Bookmakers were making May the favourite, followed by Gove, even before Johnson dramatically announced later in the morning, after she had made her speech, that he was not going ...
[Ed. Note] Out of the respect and recognition of the impact made by longtime BJL friend and contributor, Reb Shaya Gross, z’l, we will maintain a living memoriam to Shaya through the sweet words and thoughtful insights of  his Divrei Torah. BJL readers will remember his weekly column on the Parsha and on various Torah ideas and concepts. These meaningful words will help us remember this special young man who will be sorely missed and for those who did not merit to know him, this will be the most appropriate way for them to become familiar with who he was. The Gemara tells us that the color of the techeiles [the blue string of the Tzitzis] is similar to the color of the sea, which is similar to the color of the sky, which is similar to the color of Hashem’s throne; hence t...
The Israeli rabbinate investigative department has nabbed a recalcitrant husband after he hid from his wife for ten years. The story began when the couple, parents of four children, decided to divorce but ran into financial issues that were dragged out in civil court. Rav Eliyohu Maimon, head of the Rabbinate’s agunah department, said that the beis din eventually ruled that the husband must divorce his wife immediately despite the outstanding financial issues. The husband disappeared, leaving no forwarding address for his mail. “A year ago, the beis din handed the case to our agunah department so that we could locate him,” said Rav Maimon. “We hired a private investigator but it was very hard to find him. He hid himself effectively and had help from his...
According to the Insurance Information Institute, 1.6 million deer-vehicle collisions occur each year, resulting in 200 fatalities, tens of thousands of injuries and over $3.6 billion in vehicle damage. Being prepared can help prevent you from adding to these statistics. When driving this summer in Upstate, NY, you should: Watch for the rest of the gang. Deer are pack animals, and rarely travel alone. If a deer crosses in front of you, chances are there are more nearby. Slow down and keep an eye out for more deer darting across the road. Timing is everything. Deer are most active at dusk and dawn: periods when your vision is most compromised. To add to their terrible timing, deer are on the move during mating season (between October and January) when you’re more likely to travel a...
