Even as an adult, I still find myself mesmerized by the weekly morning garbage pickup — the rumble of the truck, the excessively loud beeping of the backup alarm system, the collectors hopping off the back, the swift lift and toss of the garbage into the hopper, and the satisfying crush as the packer swallows the garbage into its interior.I’ve always admired garbage collectors — not because I’d want to be one, but precisely because I wouldn’t. Who would want to be a garbage collector? It’s hard, messy work. They ride the back of a truck in all weather, hauling away everyone else’s waste. Baltimore, MD - Aug. 15, 2025 - Research shows Baltimore City spent more than $12 million in taxpayer dollars in 2024 to fund salaries for more than 150 employees in Mayor Brandon Scott’s office. A handful of those employees earned more than Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, the state’s highest-ranking elected official. According to data from watchdog nonprofits, that trend continues into 2025. Two government spending watchdogs, Open the Books and the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, told Spotlight on Maryland that the salaries represent not only concerning pay disparities but irresponsible fiscal management. Among the highest earners in Scott’s office in 2024, several made between $196,000 and $237,000 annually: Dana Moore, Director for the Office of Equity & Civil Rights...

An official from South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry told the British outlet that the cabinet had approved the arrangement, which includes Israeli investment in infrastructure and US sanctions relief, alongside Emirati financial support. “The South Sudanese land is enough to host more people from different nations,” the official said, noting the economic potential of the deal. However, he added, “This kind of deal is not easy for South Sudanese to understand right now.” Despite Wednesday’s denial by South Sudanese autho...

Toronto, Canada -  Aug. 14, 2025 - A controversial decision by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to pull a film depicting the October 7 Hamas massacre in southern Israel has been reversed following a wave of international condemnation and intense negotiations, the Toronto Sun reported. The initial cancellation of the film’s screening sparked outrage, with critics accusing TIFF of silencing a vi...
Parshas Eikev falls between the two places in the Torah where we are warned of the calamities which would befall Klal Yisroel if they turned away from Hashem.  In between those readings of Parshas Bechukosai and Ki Savo we also experience Tisha B’Av, when we vividly recall and reflect on many of those warnings which came to pass on multiple occasions in our history.   Conversely, Parshas Eikev begins with promises of great rewards for fulfilling Hashem’s Mitzvos. Specific blessings of ample crops, health, great families and security from our enemies are just some of the assurances given.  Our Parsha gives us perhaps the greatest blessing of all, it tells us the failures of mankind which lead us to go astray.  Not only does Hashem urge us to do what&rsqu...

This past week was a particularly difficult one for me since the beloved individual who greatly impacted my life's trajectory passed away.  Rav Avrohom Gurewitz, zt'l, the renowned founder of Yeshivas Ner Moshe, and author of the twenty-three remarkable volumes entitled Ohr Avrohom, had entered my life when I was yet in High School, inspiring me by his warmth, wisdom, and wit. I had maintained a lifetime connection that has left an eternal imprint on my soul. At a shiva visit with one of his daughters this past week I was asked how I would describe a man I had known and admired for nearly sixty years, I said that he was the Marlboro Man, Clint Eastwood, and Moshe Rabbeinu all wrapped into one. This may sound strange, but for those who were fortunate to know him they under...
