Baltimore, MD - July 29, 2025 -  Annapolis was recently named to CNN's list of America's Best Towns to Visit in 2025. CNN lauded the historical and nautical vibe of Naptown, a small city of about 40,000 at the crux of the Chesapeake Bay and the Severn River. "Indeed, there’s a lot of history throughout this cozy waterfront city, whose narrow streets, brick sidewalks and handsome Georgian buildings could serve as an 18th-century movie set," CNN reporter Brandon Griggs wrote. Griggs recommended that tourists visit the state house, spend a day on the water, tour the U.S. Naval Academy and try some seafood. "Annapolis, Maryland’s capital and a 45-minute drive from Washington, D.C., offers visitors much more than historic charm," Griggs wro...
Britain will recognize a Palestinian State by September if the situation in Gaza does not improve by then, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced today (Tuesday). He stated that the recognition would take place at the UN General Assembly "unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, reaches a ceasefire, makes clear there will be no annexation in the West Bank, and commits to a long-term peace process that delivers a Two State Solution." Starmer's ultimatum to Israel follows a similar announcement from French President Emmanuel Macron last week.
Hamas has called for intensified mass protest activity against Israel from August 1-3, seeking to capitalize on the momentum of the starvation narrative in the Gaza Strip. In an official statement, Hamas urged global demonstrations to protest what it described as “continued Zionist aggression, destruction, and starvation in the Gaza Strip.” August 3 has been designated as a day of solidarity with Gaza, Jerusalem, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, marking one year since the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Hamas also called for increased demonstrations in front of Israeli, US, and other pro-Israel embassies around the world, claiming such actions are necessary to pressure Israel to halt its operations in Gaza. Two days ago, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya c...
Baltimore, MD - July 29, 2025 - The hot weather continues in Maryland, and the state has reported an increase in heat-related deaths this summer compared to last year. At least 13 people have died from the heat this summer, and according to the Maryland Department of Health, that is two more than this time last year. In 2022, the state recorded six heat-related deaths. Dr. Clifford Mitchell, from the Department of Health, explains why that number was so low in 2022 compared to now. “We still had a lot of COVID-19. A lot of activity that was not taking place,” Mitchell said. “People were behaving differently.” The report also found that most of the heat-related deaths so far this year are males who are above the age of 65.

Baltimore, MD - July 29, 2025 - Narcan, fentanyl test strips, and clean needles are being used across Baltimore to prevent overdoses and infections. These tools can save lives in the moment but they’re not enough, according to one expert on addiction and recovery. Mike Gimbel, a longtime advocate for drug treatment and former heroin addict himself, says the real solution is being ignored: long-term access to treatment. “The demand for drug treatment beds is enormous,” Gimbel said. “This is where Baltimore and the state of Maryland have fallen on their face.” Gimbel, who has been in recovery for nearly 53 years, said the current strategies being used by city and state leaders are falling short. He’s calling them out publicly for what he calls a failure...

New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mandani is facing renewed scrutiny for his past stances on policing in the wake of an office building mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan that left three civilians dead as well as a police officer. The shooter was neutralized as more information is being learned about the alleged gunman, Shane Tamura of Las Vegas. "I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts. Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground," Mamdani posted to X on Monday night. In the replies, people quickly shared images of a June 8, 2020 post when Mamdani said "No, we want to defund the police" and a Nov. 5, 2020 post when he said...
Hydes, MD - July 29, 2025  - Maryland Gov. Wes Moore slammed the region's electric grid operator, accusing the organization of blocking new power plants and driving up electricity bills, and threatened legal action over a process he said hurts Maryland farmers and working families. After an hour-long, closed-door meeting on Monday morning at Boordy Vineyards in northeast Baltimore County, Moore took to a barnyard stage before dozens of the state’s agricultural leaders. He began his nearly 20-minute speech with a somber tone, but halfway through, he raised his pitch and, at times, struck his hand on the podium bearing the state seal. “If we are going to be serious about actually creating a future that makes sure that we can respect all parts of the state, and make su...
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that a gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League but took the wrong elevator. Investigators believe Shane Tamura was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building’s lobby but accidentally entered the wrong set of elevator banks, Adams said in interviews on Tuesday. Four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, were killed. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested he had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He had played football in high school in ...
A shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday left at least five people dead, including an off-duty New York City police officer, sources told the The Associated Press. The suspect was identified as Shane Tamura, of Nevada, two people briefed on the investigation told the AP. Sources said he fatally shot himself. Law enforcement officials located identification on Tamura’s body, including a concealed carry permit from Las Vegas, the people said. The people were not authorized to discuss details of an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building around 6:30 p.m. for a report of someone shot. The building houses some of the country’s top fin...
New York, July 29, 2025 – An NYPD officer has died after being shot in the back during a deadly shooting incident at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The officer was from a Bronx precinct and had been on assignment near the building when the shooting occurred. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital for surgery but did not survive, according to a law enforcement source. The shooter, described as a lone gunman, was found dead inside the building from what officials believe to be a self-inflicted injury. Law enforcement released a photo of the suspect walking into the skyscraper carrying a large gun, wearing sunglasses and a dark jacket. The building at 345 Park Avenue, which houses offices for the NFL and Blackstone, was the center of the morning’s chaos. The NYPD confirmed th...
Religious identity stretches across many features and dimensions. Sometimes, the most dangerous breakdowns occur when one element of religion becomes dominant at the expense of others. Identity becomes lopsided—fixated on a single strand while other vital threads are ignored. Too Holy to Care The collapse of the Jewish empire during the Mikdash era was one such example. Our religious experience became excessively ritualized. The Mikdash stood tall, and the overt presence of Hashem was palpable. Within this context, we became addicted to rituals and mitzvot, while the moral spirit of Torah was pushed aside. We hid behind korbanot rites, ignoring the theft, deception, and corruption that hollowed our society. The Nevi’im censured us not for our mitzvot and korbanot, but for the ...

If you regularly make donations to tax-exempt charities and non-profits, you should be aware of upcoming rule changes governing how much of your contributions will be deductible. Some of the changes, which are in President Donald Trump’s recently enacted federal tax-and-spending cuts package, affect filers who take the standard deduction. Others affect filers who itemize — which you do when your individual deductions combined exceed the standard. Here’s a rundown of some key changes that will take effect in 2026: Non-itemizers may deduct more in cash gifts In the first two years of the pandemic, if you took the standard deduction on your federal income tax return, you also were allowed to deduct an additional $300 ($600 for married couples filing jointly) for ...
Baltimore, MD - July 28, 2025  - Frustrated members of Maryland’s congressional delegation appealed unsuccessfully to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official for permission to tour a temporary detention facility in Baltimore, staging an impromptu sit-in in a hallway after waiting for hours to be let in. “We expect, quite frankly, that we will be allowed entrance,” Rep. Kweisi Mfume, a Baltimore Democrat, said to an ICE official on the sixth floor of the Fallon Federal Building. A locked door blocked Mfume from inspecting conditions inside the holding facility that the five lawmakers, all Democrats, hoped to inspect following constituent complaints about inadequate conditions. Nikita Baker, the acting field office director, refused to allow the lawmakers...
Israel will continue to work with international agencies as well as the U.S. and European nations to ensure that large amounts of humanitarian aid flows into the Gaza Strip. As part of this effort, Israel paused IDF operations in key populated areas of Gaza from 10am to 8pm every day and designated secure routes from 6am to 11pm that will ensure the safe passage of more convoys delivering aid.We already allow significant amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza every single day, including food, water and medicine. Unfortunately, Hamas, which openly uses civilians as human shields, operates from hospitals and uses schools and kindergartens to store weapons, has been stealing aid from the Gaza population many times by shooting Palestinians. While the situation in Gaza is difficult and Israel...

An American Hug in a Bat Yam Apartment  Sylvia is an elderly woman from Bat Yam, whose home was damaged by an Iranian missile during the war with Iran in June. Last week, dozens of Jewish women from the United States met her when they came to Israel for the first time with the Taglit program, on a volunteer mission. They arrived in Bat Yam, armed with cleaning supplies and boundless energy, ready to help the city on a rehabilitation mission. For an entire day, these American women dedicated themselves to making Silvia’s apartment habitable—scrubbing and cleaning as they deciphered labels on Israeli cleaning products. The work was conducted in English mixed with Hebrew, a lot of hand gestures, laughter and hugs. Then came the moment when Sylvia exclaimed: “The floor...
