We were frustratingly so close—just days away—from entering the Land of Israel and launching the golden age of Jewish history. We stood merely a three-day journey from our destiny before everything unraveled. Though we stumbled in several areas, one of the central failures was our misuse of language. Petty complaints and grumbling about desert conditions escalated into slander against Moshe Rabeinu, which soon deteriorated into defamation of Eretz Yisrael itself. We must speak not with moral integrity but with ideological clarity. This past week, two public statements by Torah personalities were deeply unsettling. To write about the sanctity of language while fueling further division would be both hypocritical and counterproductive. For this reason, I will not mention names, ...
Today is a dark day in New York State, as the Senate voted, 35 to 27, to pass the Medical Aid in Dying Act (S.138) to legalize physician-assisted suicide. The Assembly passed the same bill in April; it now goes to Governor Kathy Hochul for signature.  The bill would allow physicians, at the request of patients, to write prescriptions for lethal drugs for patients who are believed by two physicians as having less than six months left to live.  As an Orthodox Jewish organization, Agudath Israel of America is guided by the timeless principle that life is sacred. Our tradition teaches that every human being is created in the image of G-d, and that every moment of life has infinite value. Society legalizing coordinated killing, even in the difficult situation where the victim is in ...
In Shemos, Perek Chof Heh, posuk yud daled, the Torah tells us that one must not take out the “badim” (poles) of the Aron.  The Rambam in Sefer Hamitzvos, asseh lamed daled says the Kohanim were given the mitzvah to carry the Aron from place to place. The Leviim did this mitzvah during the time spent in the midbar since there were so few Kohanim at the time; however, once the Kohanim multiplied, the mitzvah was given to the Kohanim. The Ramban in his glosses in Shoresh Shlishi questions the Rambam’s statement and says that we have a steadfast rule that no part of the Torah ever chang...
Baltimore, MD - June 9, 2025 - Every Sunday morning for the past 18 months, Baltimoreans have marched in solidarity with the hostages held in Gaza, and with the hostages' families.Following last week’s attack on a similar event in Boulder, the march that took place in Baltimore this past Sunday was not simply about showing solidarity with the hostages, but also about not cowering to terror. In an inspiring demonstration of Jewish pride and determination, over 400 people from across the spectrum of our community assembled on Sunday at Har Sinai-Oheb Shalom for Baltimore’s weekly walk for the hostages. People of all ages, along with rabbis, community leaders, and local politicians, joined together to publicly and loudly proclaim that the Baltimore Jewish community will...
Roughly 500 Marines are deploying to the Los Angeles area to protect federal buildings and personnel in the wake of weekend protests over immigration that have already led President Trump to federalize National Guard troops, defense and congressional officials said. The troops, which are assigned to 29 Palms, Calif., won’t engage with protesters, the officials said. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The decision to send active duty forces into a U.S. city marked an escalation of the use of military troops to quell domestic unrest and came over the objections of California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has called the federal intervention an intrusion on state sovereignty. The troops, which could arrive in the ...
The UK House of Commons scheduled a parliamentary debate for today to discuss a petition seeking to outlaw non-stun ritual slaughter, a move which would directly affect halal and kosher practices, The Independent reported. The petition, which garnered over 109,000 signatures, frames the method as “barbaric” and calls it incompatible with modern British values. If passed, the ban would end longstanding religious exemptions allowing both Jewish shechita and some halal methods to proceed without pre-slaughter stunning. Supporters argue that animal welfare should override those exemptions; opponents contend that ritual slaughter follows strict religious guidelines and humane protocols. Currently, UK law requires stunning for most meat, but permits exceptions for religio...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said California will sue the Trump administration on Monday over its deployment of the National Guard to quell Los Angeles protests against federal immigration raids. In an interview Sunday evening on MSNBC, Newsom said the lawsuit would challenge Trump’s federalizing of the California National Guard without the state’s consent, a move with little precedent in U.S. history. “Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s, you know, lit the proverbial match. He’s putting fuel on this fire, ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard — an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act,” Newsom said on MSNBC. ...

The route was used by Hamas terrorists as a hideout, and dozens of weapons and additional munitions were located inside. All weapons were confiscated and dismantled by the troops. New York City mayoral candidates Brad Lander, Scott Stringer, Zohran Mamdani, Adrienne Adams, Zellnor Myrie, Whitney Tilson, and Jim Walden attended a forum on Sunday at the B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue in the city. During the event, which was co-hosted by the New York Jewish Agenda, the candidates were asked a plethora of questions on Jewish issues. During the debate, Whitney Tilson criticized his fellow candidate Zohran Mamdani, who is unabashedly anti-Israel, and accused him of being a "primary inciter" of violent antisemitic and anti-Israel mobs in the city. Do this Mamdani replied by citing far-left Israeli activist Noy Katsman, whose brother was murdered on October 7th, saying: "We must never give up on the conviction that all life, Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish and Arab, i...
Efforts to clean up an oil spill that leaked 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the Baltimore Harbor on Wednesday have recovered most of the spilled oil, says the U.S. Coast Guard. In a statement sent to The Baltimore Sun on Saturday evening, Lt. j.g. Erin Johnson, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard, said that the crew working to clean the spill has recovered 4,700 of the estimated 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into the Harbor, and that between 25% and 50% of the oil has likely dissipated since the spill. Johnson continued stating that after rain showers in the morning brought no additional oil out of the storm drain system, the emergency response team determined that their attempts to flush oil out of the system worked. Hostage talks between Israel and Hamas remain at an impasse, two sources familiar with the negotiations tell The Times of Israel, after some of the mediators expressed optimism last week that Hamas would agree to soften its response to US special envoy Steve Witkoff’s hostage deal proposal. Witkoff told hostage families he met with in Washington last week that he was optimistic about the chances for a breakthrough before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which began on Friday, according to a source present in the meeting. Even if such a breakthrough had been reached, though, the sides still need to hold a round of proximity talks to close final details, such as the exact parameters of Israel’s partial military withdrawal. But Hamas is standing by its demand for cle...
