Roughly 500 Marines are deploying to the Los Angeles area to protect federal buildings and personnel in the wake of weekend protests over immigration that have already led President Trump to federalize National Guard troops, defense and congressional officials said.
The troops, which are assigned to 29 Palms, Calif., won’t engage with protesters, the officials said.
The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The decision to send active duty forces into a U.S. city marked an escalation of the use of military troops to quell domestic unrest and came over the objections of California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has called the federal intervention an intrusion on state sovereignty.
The troops, which could arrive in the ...
The UK House of Commons scheduled a parliamentary debate for today to discuss a petition seeking to outlaw non-stun ritual slaughter, a move which would directly affect halal and kosher practices, The Independent reported. The petition, which garnered over 109,000 signatures, frames the method as “barbaric” and calls it incompatible with modern British values.
If passed, the ban would end longstanding religious exemptions allowing both Jewish shechita and some halal methods to proceed without pre-slaughter stunning. Supporters argue that animal welfare should override those exemptions; opponents contend that ritual slaughter follows strict religious guidelines and humane protocols.
Currently, UK law requires stunning for most meat, but permits exceptions for religio...

Baltimore, Md - June 9, 2025 - The Maryland Supreme Court upheld a state law banning gun possession by people who have been sentenced to two years or more in prison, calling it comparable to a ban on gun possession by felons, whether the underlying crime was a felony or not.
Despite a string of recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have greatly strengthened gun rights, the high court has not suggested that the Second Amendment “prohibits the enactment of laws banning the possession of guns by categories of persons thought by a legislature to present a special danger of misuse,” the Maryland court said Friday.
Maryland’s law is such a law, said the opinion by Maryland Chief Judge Matthew Fader.
“Based on our conclusion that § 5-133(b)(2) [the ...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said California will sue the Trump administration on Monday over its deployment of the National Guard to quell Los Angeles protests against federal immigration raids.
In an interview Sunday evening on MSNBC, Newsom said the lawsuit would challenge Trump’s federalizing of the California National Guard without the state’s consent, a move with little precedent in U.S. history.
“Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s, you know, lit the proverbial match. He’s putting fuel on this fire, ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard — an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act,” Newsom said on MSNBC.

The Paratroopers Brigade, under the command of the 98th Division, is operating in Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip.
So far, the troops have eliminated dozens of terrorists and dismantled over 200 terrorist infrastructure sites, including tunnel shafts, weapons storage facilities, and military structures.
During an operation in Khan Yunis, Paratroopers, in coordination with Yahalom troops, located and dismantled an underground tunnel route approximately 1.5 kilometers long.
The route was used by Hamas terrorists as a hideout, and dozens of weapons and additional munitions were located inside. All weapons were confiscated and dismantled by the troops.

New York City mayoral candidates Brad Lander, Scott Stringer, Zohran Mamdani, Adrienne Adams, Zellnor Myrie, Whitney Tilson, and Jim Walden attended a forum on Sunday at the B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue in the city. During the event, which was co-hosted by the New York Jewish Agenda, the candidates were asked a plethora of questions on Jewish issues.
During the debate, Whitney Tilson criticized his fellow candidate Zohran Mamdani, who is unabashedly anti-Israel, and accused him of being a "primary inciter" of violent antisemitic and anti-Israel mobs in the city. Do this Mamdani replied by citing far-left Israeli activist Noy Katsman, whose brother was murdered on October 7th, saying: "We must never give up on the conviction that all life, Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish and Arab, i...
Hostage talks between Israel and Hamas remain at an impasse, two sources familiar with the negotiations tell The Times of Israel, after some of the mediators expressed optimism last week that Hamas would agree to soften its response to US special envoy Steve Witkoff’s hostage deal proposal.
Witkoff told hostage families he met with in Washington last week that he was optimistic about the chances for a breakthrough before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which began on Friday, according to a source present in the meeting. Even if such a breakthrough had been reached, though, the sides still need to hold a round of proximity talks to close final details, such as the exact parameters of Israel’s partial military withdrawal.
But Hamas is standing by its demand for cle...
Tensions mounted in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon as police clashed with protesters on a freeway and declared another protest outside the Metropolitan Detention Center “unlawful.”
Dozens of protesters were arrested throughout the day. About 300 National Guard members were deployed in the city, after President Trump made the extraordinary decision to send members of the military to counter what he called “insurrectionist mobs.”
The protesters, responding to the Trump administration’s immigration raids in the city, blocked the 101 freeway starting at about 3:30 p.m. in Los Angeles. Police officers, firing tear gas canisters and other projectiles into the crowds, managed to clear the highway by 5 p.m. Hundreds of people continued to line the surrounding stree...
Participants of the "Madleen" flotilla, which is making its way to the shores of the Gaza Strip in an attempt to break the maritime blockade imposed by Israel, reported early Monday morning that IDF troops boarded the ship and took control of it.
According to the reports, the activists on the ship were detained, and the ship is on its way to the port of Ashdod.
Earlier, the activists reported that an alarm had sounded on deck. Later, they clarified that it was a false alarm.
"An alarm was sounded on deck, and life jackets are ready in case of an attempted takeover of the ship," the flotilla's Telegram group reported. A few minutes later, another message was posted: "The vessel that approached us has left. All eyes on deck, all eyes on Gaza."
The activists on the flotilla...

IDF Spokesman Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin on Sunday visited the site and Hamas headquarters where Mohammed Sinwar was killed under the “European” Hospital in Khan Yunis and declared that the military is progressing toward overthrowing Hamas.
Defrin said the group’s headquarters under the hospital was one of the central command centers for planning the October 7 invasion as well as conducting Hamas operations during the war.
Footage has shown that the underground site contained several well-outfitted rooms for senior Hamas officials, such as Sinwar, whose body the IDF on Sunday confirmed it had seized while operating in the underground tunnels.Defrin’s comments were part of the IDF’s formal rollout of photos and videos confirming Si...
The IDF on Sunday revealed intelligence documents showing that the "Spokesperson for the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip," who has been the primary source for hundreds of false statements by media outlets worldwide, is not merely under the influence of Hamas, but is an actual Hamas agent.
Throughout the current war, the IDF has recommended that media outlets be wary of reports and casualty statistics provided by Mahmoud Zabar Tafesh Bassal and his team at the "civil defense" for Gaza based on the idea that almost any official institution in Gaza was under Hamas's influence, given that the terror group was ready to kill or mame anyone who did not toe its line on public relations messages.
However, on Sunday, the IDF revealed an analysis of actual intelligence documents found dur...
The National Guard will be deployed to Los Angeles County after anti-ICE protests continued to escalate Saturday afternoon, Trump administration border czar Tom Homan told Fox News Saturday.
On Saturday, tear gas was deployed near Home Depot in Paramount, California, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were allegedly conducting a raid.
Following the raid, a violent protest broke out and several arrests were made for assault on a federal agent, according to U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael W. Banks.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to call out state and local leadership's inaction.
"If Governor Favin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can't do their jobs, which everyone knows they can't, then the ...
