Tensions began to rise last Friday following a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in several neighborhoods, including Boyle Heights and the Fashion District. The raids resulted in dozens of arrests and quickly drew crowds of demonstrators accusing the federal government of targeting immigrant communities. According to police reports, what began as street protests escalated into riots, with demonstrators hurling projectiles and Molotov cocktails at law enforcement personnel. Riot police responded with tear gas and crowd control munitions. The disturbances spr...

Efforts to clean up an oil spill that leaked 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the Baltimore Harbor on Wednesday have recovered most of the spilled oil, says the U.S. Coast Guard. In a statement sent to The Baltimore Sun on Saturday evening, Lt. j.g. Erin Johnson, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard, said that the crew working to clean the spill has recovered 4,700 of the estimated 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into the Harbor, and that between 25% and 50% of the oil has likely dissipated since the spill. Johnson continued stating that after rain showers in the morning brought no additional oil out of the storm drain system, the emergency response team determined that their attempts to flush oil out of the system worked. Hostage talks between Israel and Hamas remain at an impasse, two sources familiar with the negotiations tell The Times of Israel, after some of the mediators expressed optimism last week that Hamas would agree to soften its response to US special envoy Steve Witkoff’s hostage deal proposal. Witkoff told hostage families he met with in Washington last week that he was optimistic about the chances for a breakthrough before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which began on Friday, according to a source present in the meeting. Even if such a breakthrough had been reached, though, the sides still need to hold a round of proximity talks to close final details, such as the exact parameters of Israel’s partial military withdrawal. But Hamas is standing by its demand for cle...
Tensions mounted in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon as police clashed with protesters on a freeway and declared another protest outside the Metropolitan Detention Center “unlawful.” Dozens of protesters were arrested throughout the day. About 300 National Guard members were deployed in the city, after President Trump made the extraordinary decision to send members of the military to counter what he called “insurrectionist mobs.” The protesters, responding to the Trump administration’s immigration raids in the city, blocked the 101 freeway starting at about 3:30 p.m. in Los Angeles. Police officers, firing tear gas canisters and other projectiles into the crowds, managed to clear the highway by 5 p.m. Hundreds of people continued to line the surrounding stree...
Participants of the "Madleen" flotilla, which is making its way to the shores of the Gaza Strip in an attempt to break the maritime blockade imposed by Israel, reported early Monday morning that IDF troops boarded the ship and took control of it. According to the reports, the activists on the ship were detained, and the ship is on its way to the port of Ashdod. Earlier, the activists reported that an alarm had sounded on deck. Later, they clarified that it was a false alarm. "An alarm was sounded on deck, and life jackets are ready in case of an attempted takeover of the ship," the flotilla's Telegram group reported. A few minutes later, another message was posted: "The vessel that approached us has left. All eyes on deck, all eyes on Gaza." The activists on the flotilla...

The IDF on Sunday revealed intelligence documents showing that the "Spokesperson for the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip," who has been the primary source for hundreds of false statements by media outlets worldwide, is not merely under the influence of Hamas, but is an actual Hamas agent. Throughout the current war, the IDF has recommended that media outlets be wary of reports and casualty statistics provided by Mahmoud Zabar Tafesh Bassal and his team at the "civil defense" for Gaza based on the idea that almost any official institution in Gaza was under Hamas's influence, given that the terror group was ready to kill or mame anyone who did not toe its line on public relations messages. However, on Sunday, the IDF revealed an analysis of actual intelligence documents found dur...
The National Guard will be deployed to Los Angeles County after anti-ICE protests continued to escalate Saturday afternoon, Trump administration border czar Tom Homan told Fox News Saturday. On Saturday, tear gas was deployed near Home Depot in Paramount, California, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were allegedly conducting a raid. Following the raid, a violent protest broke out and several arrests were made for assault on a federal agent, according to U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael W. Banks. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to call out state and local leadership's inaction. "If Governor Favin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can't do their jobs, which everyone knows they can't, then the ...
Baltimore, MD - June 7, 2025 - Officials with Johns Hopkins Medicine confirmed Friday night that 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the Inner Harbor. Early estimates were initially at 2,000 gallons. There continues to be no impact on the drinking water and the spill remains contained in the marina at the South Central Avenue Bridge in Harbor East. Governor Wes Moore and Mayor Brandon Scott released a joint statement Friday saying the State of Maryland, City of Baltimore, and the United States Coast Guard are continuing to clean up remnants of the spill that occurred Wednesday morning. The Maryland Department of Environment, in partnership with the United States Coast Guard, and in coordination with the City of Baltimore, will assume oversight of the sustained cleanup operation S...
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have issued a public service announcement highlighting an increased threat to Jewish and Israeli communities in the United States. This alert follows two violent incidents in recent weeks. On June 1, 2025, an individual attacked a pro-Israel gathering in Boulder, Colorado, by throwing two Molotov cocktails, injuring at least nine people. This incident came shortly after a separate attack in late May, where two Israeli Embassy staffers were shot and killed after attending an event at the Capitol Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The assailant in the Washington attack reportedly cited grievances related to Israel's treatment of Gazans. The FBI and DHS warn that the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict may...
The Trump administration has moved to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia from imprisonment in a Salvadoran facility in order to file a criminal case against him with charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee, an attorney for Abrego Garcia told The Hill. The return of Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported despite being protected from removal to his home country, comes after administration officials had fought court rulings ordering his return. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said he would never live a “peaceful” life in the U.S. Abrego Garcia was pulled over for speeding as he was driving from St. Louis to his home in Maryland, and video of the incident shows the officer skeptical of a van full of passengers without any luggage. Newly unseale...

Baltimore, MD - June 5, 2025 - Every Sunday morning for the past 18 months, Baltimoreans have marched in solidarity with the hostages held in Gaza, and with the hostages' families. The march in Baltimore is part of an international campaign to ensure that the plight of the hostages is not forgotten and to demand the hostages' immediate release. The reprehensible attack that took place last Sunday was an attempt to cower, intimidate, and silence not only the marchers in Boulder, but all who pray for the release of the hostages—both worldwide and right here in Baltimore. We cannot, and will not, allow this to happen. This Sunday, June 8 (marking 611 days in captivity), the entire community is urged to join the march and demonstrate to the media and to the general publi...
A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump’s bid to prevent international students from entering the U.S. or getting visas to attend Harvard University. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs issued a temporary restraining order Thursday night instructing the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department to disregard a proclamation Trump issued Wednesday wielding presidential immigration authority to effectively ban foreign nationals from entering the U.S. to study or teach at Harvard. In a two-page order, Burroughs said Harvard showed it “will sustain immediate and irreparable injury before there is an opportunity to hear from all parties” about the legality of Trump’s directive. The judge’s order came less th...
